Premier League Contenders Begin to Show True Colours

Premier League Contenders Begin to Show True Colours

As summer slips away to be replaced by autumn, we enter the business end of the Premier League season. It may be too early to jump to conclusions, but the league table already looks familiar, with five of last season’s top six occupying the first five positions. Only Liverpool, in seventh, lag behind the other ‘ heavyweights’. Still, Jurgen Klopp’s men have upcoming games against Manchester United and Tottenham where they can leapfrog their opponents back to the top of the table. Indeed, October and November could be crucial months in determining the shape of this Premier League season.

Liverpool’s match against Manchester United (14th October) should be particularly interesting. Despite a barnstorming start to the season, it has been suggested that United have yet to play any tough games. A successful trip to Anfield will certainly silence any critics in that respect. The game could be pivotal for either club, but there is arguably more pressure on Liverpool and their manager. This season, Klopp’s tactics and decision-making have come under more scrutiny than at any time since he took over at Anfield. A loss at the hands of their hated rivals, coupled with more ground lost on fellow title chasers, will have more critics circling the enigmatic German coach.

Still, Liverpool fans should not get too worried just yet; It is worth remembering that it was only at this stage last season that Chelsea began to transform from a so-called crisis club to the all-conquering champions that never looked in danger of losing top spot. Indeed, the word ‘crisis’ was being thrown at Chelsea during the early part of this season, but they have since steadied the ship. The Blues undoubtedly have the talent to successfully defend their crown this season, although they did suffer a setback in their recent defeat to Manchester City.

It is, of course, City who have stolen much of the limelight this season. Their form has been nothing short of scintillating. They have dismantled teams with a swagger and style that should act as a huge warning to all other contenders. It is hard to argue against City’s position as bookies favourites for the Premier League. You can find the latest Premier League odds and much more at William Hill. Of course, City was riding high this time last year and came undone, so Pep Guardiola should not be getting ready to celebrate his first English title just yet.

Elsewhere, Tottenham have been playing with an assured form that suggests they will have a big part to play once again this season. Led by Harry Kane, who is celebrating a recent Balon D’ or nomination, they really have been finding their rhythm in recent games. Two crucial factors may define their season: turning Wembley into a fortress reminiscent of White Harte Lane and getting Dele Ali to reproduce last season’s form. Get those right and Tottenham fans could be in for a special campaign.

And then there is Arsenal. Will the Gunners fall afoul of the same old shortcomings? Recent results have suggested that Arsene Wenger may have a trick or two left to play as he comes to the end of his storied career at Arsenal. All sides know that there is still a lot to play for, in what could be one of the most thrilling Premier League seasons in years. There are still over 300 games left to provide some answers.
