Young cancer survivor endures three transplants to beat AML

The third time is a charm for Travis Arnold. At age 12, Travis was diagnosed with a myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) that evolved into acute myeloid leukemia (AML). When two transplants at another hospital, using perfect match donors, didn't work, they sought the help of MD Anderson. Doctors at MD Anderson performed a haploidentical transplant. This is a half-match bone marrow transplant. While half-match donors aren’t a perfect match, they’re close enough to allow patients to move ahead with a transplant. Parents are always a half-match for their children, and vice versa, so Travis's dad became his donor for his third and final transplant.
