Pompeo: US to re-impose Iran sanctions

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says the U.S. intends to fully enforce sanctions on Iran, and they'll be back in place early this week. Speaking with reporters on Sunday (August 5) while returning from a tour in Asia, Pompeo said the White House would announce details of those sanctions on Monday (August 6). He says the re-imposed sanctions are quote part of our efforts to push back against Iranian malign activity. The so-called snapback sanctions will target Iran's purchases of U.S. dollars, its trade in gold and precious metals, and its dealings with metals, coal or industrial related software. In May, Trump pulled out of a major 2015 deal between world powers and Tehran, under which international sanctions were lifted in exchange for curbs on Iran's nuclear program. Despite opposition from European allies he denounced the Obama-era deal as one-sided in Iran's favor. The U.S. has also told other countries to stop importing Iranian oil, or face American financial measures. According to state TV, Iran is turning to measures like easing foreign exchange rules in a bid to stop a collapse of its currency, which has lost half of its value since April due to fears of U.S. sanctions. A U.S. Treasury official tells Reuters, those sanctions will be reinstated at 12:01 AM Eastern Daylight time Tuesday.
