Chernobyl selfie: Instagrammers criticised for ‘inappropriate pictures’

The record-breaking TV series by HBO ‘Chernobyl’ has led to a significant increase in tourism to the nuclear disaster site in Ukraine. Some visitors have been criticised for posting ‘inappropriate pictures’ on social media, with the writer of the show Craig Mazin urging tourists to behave “with respect”. The five-part miniseries dramatizes the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster, in which thousands of people are believed to have died. Tourists can access the ‘exclusion zone’ and see the original equipment inside the nuclear power plant. The site has been open to the public since 2011.
