Play Video: Haiti: hunger & gender-based violence ahead of Hurricane Season - Press Conference | United Nations

The Regional Director for the World Food Program (WFP) in Latin America and the Caribbean, Lola Castro, today (3 Jun) said WFP in Haiti is facing the start of the hurricane season “with an empty warehouse where we have no stocks for assisting any emergency.” Castro, talking to reporters in New York via Video Teleconference, said, “at this moment half of the population of Haiti are facing hunger or some kind of emergency levels of hunger. And this is 5.7 million people. And Haiti also is one of the five countries on the world that we have catastrophic levels of hunger. In fact, in the displaced camps of port au Prince, we have around 8,500 people who are really suffering without food, water, sanitation, and it is really traumatic to have this in this Western hemisphere.” She said, “around 14,000 people that have been recently displaced from Kenscoff,” a commune where “people used to come and sell their food into the city.” The humanitarian official said, “now they are basically receiving food assistance because their houses have been burned, their livelihoods are being destroyed,” adding that “the conflict is really disrupting the food systems and the supply chains that we have in Port au Prince and Haiti itself.” She noted that “6,000 women and girls have reported some type of gender-based violence, which is really not acceptable,” stressing that Port-au-Prince “is probably one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a woman or girl now.” Castro said, WFP, “despite all the violence, displacement and collapse” is still working in Haiti, reaching “over 1.3 million people this year until March.” She said, “the situation that we're facing now is quite dramatic, because when we are looking at our stocks dwindling and disappearing and we have only stocks to assist any emergency, or any new displacement, or anybody facing IPC 4 up to July.” As the hurricane season approaches, she said, “we have no cash neither to go and buy locally if it was possible in some areas, or to do a rapid humanitarian response. We are very concerned that a single storm can put hundreds of thousands of people in Haiti again into humanitarian catastrophe and hunger.”

Play Video: Sudan, Guatemala  & other topics - Daily Press Briefing (3 June 2025)

Noon Briefing by Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General. Highlights: Sudan Commissioner of the International Commission Against Impunity/Guatemala  Ninth Austrian World Summit Human Rights/Climate Emergency Deputy Secretary-General/Travels Gaza Occupied Palestinian Territory Syria Ukraine South Sudan Democratic Republic of the Congo Photo Exhibition World Bicycle Day Financial Contribution Briefings - Today SUDAN You will have seen the horrific developments in Sudan in which five members of a UN humanitarian convoy were killed last night and several more were injured during an attack near Al Koma in North Darfur. I can tell you that we condemn in the strongest terms this horrendous act of violence against humanitarian personnel who literally put their lives at risk attempting to reach vulnerable children and families in the famine-impacted areas. This joint WFP-UNICEF 15-truck convoy had travelled over 1,800 km (just about 1,118 miles) from Port Sudan, and they were carrying food and nutrition supplies. The Agencies were negotiating access to complete the journey to El Fasher when it was attacked. The route was shared in advance, and parties on the ground were notified and aware of the location of the trucks. Multiple trucks were burned in the attack, and critical humanitarian supplies were damaged. It is devastating the supplies have not reached the civilians in need. This is the first UN humanitarian convoy that was going to make it to El Fasher in over a year. All attacks on humanitarian personnel, their facilities and vehicles must stop. They are a violation under international humanitarian law. And we call for an urgent investigation and for the perpetrators to be held to account. We call for safe, secure operating conditions and for international humanitarian law to be respected by all parties, not just in Sudan, but in all conflict-impacted countries. Under international humanitarian law, aid convoys must be protected, and parties have the obligation to allow and facilitate rapid and unimpeded passage of humanitarian relief for civilians in need. And for those who were killed in line of duty in Sudan, we extend our condolences to their families and loved ones, and we wish a speedy recovery for the wounded. Shirin COMMISSIONER OF THE INTERNATIONAL COMMISSION AGAINST IMPUNITY/GUATEMALA  The Secretary-General is concerned about the announcement by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Guatemala regarding the issuance of arrest warrants against former Commissioner of the International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG), Iván Velásquez, former CICIG Head of Investigations Luz Adriana Camargo -- now Colombia’s Attorney General -- along with 24 other former CICIG national staff and independent justice officials who collaborated with CICIG. The Secretary-General reiterates that the Commission’s international personnel, under the terms of the agreement between the UN and the Government of Guatemala regarding the establishment of the Commission, enjoys immunity from legal process with respect to acts done in the performance of their mission which continues even after the completion of their employment with CICIG. He recalls that under this agreement, the Government of Guatemala agreed to protect the personnel of CICIG - whether international or national - from abuse, threats, reprisals or acts of intimidation in virtue of their work for CICIG.  The Secretary-General reiterates his concern at the numerous reports that criminal prosecution is being carried out against those who sought to shed light on cases of corruption and worked to strengthen rule of law and the justice system in Guatemala. NINTH AUSTRIAN WORLD SUMMIT Today, the Secretary-General addressed the Ninth Austrian World Summit via a video message. He pointed out that we face a triple-whammy of woe, with pollution clogging rivers, contaminating land, and poisoning our ocean, the biodiversity being destroyed at record pace and record levels of greenhouse gases catastrophically disrupting our climate. The Secretary-General warned that no country, whether rich or poor, can escape these crises, and no country can solve them alone. But together, he said, we can reap the rewards of action, from cheap, secure power, to better health. A total of 188 Member States participated in the election, which required only one round of balloting. After the vote, representatives for the new Council members spoke to reporters. For her part, Liberian Deputy Foreign Minister said, “this achievement is not merely a reflection of our dedication. It is a testament to the hopes, dreams and aspirations of countless individuals who yearn for a world where dialogue triumphs over discord where unity prevails over division.” She said, “we have gathered here as representatives of diverse cultures and perspective, but we are united in our shared purpose to forge a more just and equitable world.” The Security Council has 15 members: five permanent members – China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States – who hold veto power, and ten non-permanent members elected by the General Assembly for staggered two-year terms. Elections are held annually by secret ballot, with seats allocated by regional group. Candidates must secure a two-thirds majority in the 193-member General Assembly to be elected. They will join the five non-permanent members elected last year – Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama, and Somalia – who will serve through 2026. The incoming members will succeed Algeria, Guyana, the Republic of Korea, Sierra Leone, and Slovenia, whose terms end in December 2025.

It comes as aid distribution centres in Gaza are closed today, as Israel's military warns roads leading to the sites will be considered "combat zones". At least 27 Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire close to an aid point on Tuesday, Hamas-backed local officials said, the third deadly incident this week near a site run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). The UK has been temporarily spared from US President Donald Trump's executive order doubling steel and aluminium tariffs from 25% to 50%. The order raises import taxes for US-based firms buying the metals from other countries from Wednesday - but the levy remains at 25% for the UK. However, the UK could end up facing the higher rate if its deal signed with the Trump administration last month, which would see steel and aluminium tariffs axed, does not come into force. Imports of UK steel into America are currently subject to tariffs, but the UK government said it wanted to implement the agreement to remove them "as soon as possible".
