United Nations Video: Ukraine: landmines crisis - Press Conference | United Nations
Press conference by Paul Heslop, the Senior UN Mine Action Adviser to the Resident Coordinator and UN Country Team in Ukraine (UNMAS), on Ukraine.
The widespread presence of landmines and unexploded ordnance in Ukraine is not just a national crisis, but a global one, warned a senior UN official today (05 June) linking the contamination to rising global food and energy costs.
“Every person in this room, every person in this city, every person in this country, and every person on this planet is paying more for their food and more for their energy because of the conflict in Ukraine,” said Paul Heslop, the UN’s Senior Mine Action Adviser in Ukraine.
Speaking to reporters in New York, Heslop stressed that restoring contaminated land to productive use could ease the burden on global markets. “The ability to get land back into use, that will bring down those prices, is dependent on the actual presence of mines and other unexploded devices,” he said, emphasizing the need to challenge both the physical and perceived risks of contamination.
About 20 percent of Ukraine’s territory is suspected to be contaminated, Heslop said, affecting more than six million people who now live near hazardous areas.
The scale of the issue is unprecedented. Heslop noted that 30,000 square kilometers of land once believed contaminated were found to be safe and could now return to agricultural production -“the equivalent of 20 times the current problem in Afghanistan,” he said. These assessments were achieved at low cost by “adopting new technology and thinking in a new way.”
Demining, he added, is “an inherently inefficient process,” with 95 percent of clearance efforts often spent on land that turns out to be safe. “You don't know exactly where the mines are,” Heslop said, underscoring the urgency of adopting more accurate and cost-effective strategies.
With the cost of cleanup likely to reach billions of dollars, he warned of long-term economic consequences. “Is it going to be single-digit billions of dollars or is it going to be tens or hundreds of billions?” he asked.
Ukraine’s digital infrastructure could be a vital asset in this effort. Heslop praised the country’s tech-savvy approach, including using mobile data to assess road usage and track returning populations. “Integrating different levels of technology, different levels of data, and non-traditional sources of data” can help target mine action efforts more effectively, he said.
He also underscored the sheer volume of unexploded ordnance. Based on conservative estimates, Heslop said that up to 10 million unexploded bombs may remain across Ukraine. “That is going to be a lot of work, and it’s going to need to be resourced, and we’re going to need to address it.”

TRIP ANNOUNCEMENT/SECRETARY-GENERAL
On Sunday, June 8, the Secretary-General will arrive in Nice, in France, to take part in the third UN Ocean Conference, co-hosted by France and Costa Rica.
On Monday, the Secretary-General will deliver remarks during the conference’s opening session. He will recall the progress achieved since the last Ocean Conference in Lisbon and call for investments to fully realize the sustainable development goal number 14, which is, as you know, life below water.
The Secretary-General will also use this opportunity to urge all countries to ratify the Agreement on Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ), and also to call on member states to agree this year on an ambitious and legally binding treaty on plastic pollution.
The BBNJ will enter into force 120 days after its 60th ratification, and to facilitate this process, our colleagues at the department of Legal Affairs are organizing a Treaty event during the Ocean conference. At that event, all Member States who have not yet done so will be able to formally deposit their ratification.
While in Nice, the Secretary-General will have bilateral meetings with both co-hosts of the conference, President Emmanuel Macron, of France, as well as President Rodrigo Chaves Robles, of Costa Rica. He will also have a number of bilateral meetings with other delegation leaders and members of the civil society who will be at the conference.
On Tuesday morning, the Secretary-General will conclude his programme in Nice with a press encounter, which will be shown live on UN WebTV.
WORLD OCEANS DAY
A day ahead of the UN Ocean Conference, the UN will mark World Oceans Day. In his message, the Secretary-General calls for the protection of marine biodiversity, the rejection of practices that inflict irreversible damage, and he calls for the delivery on the promises of the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction Agreement. &nbs
SECRETARY-GENERAL/FALLEN STAFF
This morning, the Secretary-General spoke at the annual memorial service for UN staff who have lost their lives in the line of duty over the past year, and he paid tribute to the 168 men and women who lost their lives in 2024.
He told journalists this morning that the past year has been especially devastating in Gaza, with 126 of our colleagues killed there -- 125 of those were serving with UNRWA.
Mr. Guterres said that the sacrifice of all 168 of our fallen colleagues everywhere is a tragedy, adding that it is also a reminder of the responsibility carried by every United Nations staff member, every single day.
He said that as we mourn those lost, we must also recognize the living -- the thousands of UN personnel who serve around the world today, carrying out the missions entrusted to them by the countries that make up these United Nations.

CNN Video: Kara Swisher on the ‘nuclear’ feud between Trump and Musk
The political partnership between Donald Trump and Elon and Elon Musk has exploded in spectacular fashion with a bitter war of words.
It began when Mr Trump said he was “surprised and disappointed” at Elon Musk’s criticism of his flagship spending bill. He said they had had a “great relationship” but “I don’t know if we will any more”.
Elon Musk responded on his social media platform X with a series of increasingly heated remarks about his former boss. He said the President’s claims that he has supported the budget bill were “false”. He said Mr Trump was “ungrateful” for his help in getting elected and would have lost the election without his financial support. Mr Musk warned that the President’s tariffs policy would lead to a recession.
Then Musk made an explosive allegation, claiming without evidence that Donald Trump is named in the files about the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. He said that “is the real reason they have not been made public”.
Donald Trump suggested that the easiest way to save money would be to terminate the billions of dollars in government contracts and subsidies that go to Elon Musk’s companies. Musk said that President Trump should be impeached.

International Video: How Israel's aid plan for Gaza led to mass killing
Separate incidents of mass violence on consecutive days, killing at least 60 Palestinians in Gaza, all centered around an Israel aid plan backed by the US and run by private contractors.

A week of aid chaos in Gaza that has drawn condemnation from around the world and has led the United Nations to call for an independent investigation into the deaths of desperate Palestinians queuing for aid, at locations they were told to attend by Israel’s military.
At the centre of the tragedy, an American organisation; the Gaza Humanitarian Authority. Its CEO stepped down before aid even began to be distributed, stating that he didn’t believe GHF could operate under the “humanitarian principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality, and independence” he believed in.
A system that started under a cloud of controversy and criticism and is now at the centre of two mass killings. This is how an Israeli aid plan led to further carnage in Gaza.
