Equipment You’ll Need in an Emergency Situation

Emergencies can strike at any time and cause various problems that you can’t solve with typical items lying around. That’s why creating plans and carrying equipment for these emergencies can be very wise. Luckily, experts develop lists of the equipment you’ll need in an emergency situation so that you can prepare well. Here’s a simple list of the most common equipment and items you should keep nearby.

Flashlight

One of the most dangerous things that can happen during an emergency is a loss of lighting. Without light, even normally safe spaces can be hazardous, as you risk tripping or getting lost. You should always bring a flashlight separate from your phone that works off batteries or hand-cranking for emergency use.

Portable Radio

Large-scale emergencies can limit the typical flow of news and information, cutting you off from vital news and instructions. However, a portable radio can link you back in and help you get the information you need. As with the flashlight, a radio that can use batteries or hand cranks is ideal since you can power it at any time.

Communications Devices

Sometimes, a standard radio isn’t enough, and you need other ways to communicate with people. One option is to include two-way radios in your emergency kits. These help you communicate with others very easily. You just need to ensure you know how to maintain a two-way radio battery.

First Aid Kit

Injuries during an emergency can spell disaster for everyone involved if there’s no good way to treat it. Carrying around a first aid kit can save lives in an emergency and alleviate your worries. You’re typically better off buying a premade kit when shopping for one of these.

Food and Water

Although these don’t necessarily qualify as equipment, they can often be highly important. People can’t live without a good supply of food and water, even for just a few days. That’s why setting aside rations and bottled water can save you and anyone with you.

This isn’t all the equipment you’ll need in an emergency situation, but all these items can be extremely helpful. Including all these items in your emergency kits will help you greatly if you face an emergency.

Bintou Keita, Head of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) said, “In eastern DRC, we are witnessing an intensification of the fighting and the deteriorating security and humanitarian situation.” Addressing the press today (27 Mar) Keita, said, “M 23 continues to make significant advances and expansion of its territory to unprecedented levels. This has culminated in an even more disastrous humanitarian situation with internal displacement reaching unprecedented numbers.” She also said, “We must collectively pay more attention to the deepening humanitarian crisis stemming from the M 23 escalation in North Kivu and prolonged arm violence in Ituri and South Kivu.” She continued, “More than 71 million people are internally displaced in eastern DRC - an increase of 800,000 since my last briefing some three months ago - 23.4 million people are food insecure, which means that 1 in 4 Congolese faces hunger and malnutrition making the Democratic Republic of Congo the country most affected by food insecurity.” She stated, “This humanitarian catastrophe requires a strong response from the international community. The 2024 humanitarian response plan remains underfunded.” She reiterated, “Military engagement has to go hand in hand with continued investment by the Congolese authorities in regional, national and local peace processes. This must be complemented by a profound reform of the security sector and the operationalization of the programs of disarmament, community reinsertion and stabilization.”

Noon Briefing by Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General. Highlights: -OPT -UNRWA -Syria -Somalia -Cameroon -Zero Waste -Senior Personnel Appointment -Post-Genocide Reconciliation Rwanda Exhibit -Financial contribution -Guest - today OPT In Gaza, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says that they helped evacuate civilians on Monday from Al Amal Hospital in Khan Younis, which is in southern Gaza, amid intense military operations there. OCHA – together with the Palestine Red Crescent Society and the International Committee for the Red Cross – moved out six patients and a companion, more than two dozen staff, and the bodies of two people killed inside the hospital. As of yesterday, Al Amal Hospital had ceased to function. According to the World Health Organization, two-thirds of Gaza’s 36 hospitals are now non-functional. Two are minimally functional, and 10 are partially functional – four in the north and six in the south. OCHA’s Head of the Office for the Occupied Palestinian Territory, Andrea De Domenico, was able to visit one of the four partially functional hospitals in northern Gaza, which was the Kamal Adwan, and he was able to do that visit last week. He said the hospital is receiving about 15 malnourished children a day and is struggling to maintain services. The hospital’s only generator has been heavily damaged, and health workers and patients desperately need food, water and sanitation assistance. According to the World Food Programme, roughly 70 per cent of the population in northern Gaza is facing catastrophic hunger. However, efforts to deliver life-saving assistance to the north have been impeded by access constraints and the ongoing fighting. This month, the World Food Programme was only able to send 11 convoys to the north – bringing food to some 74,000 people. Given the colossal needs, daily deliveries will be needed to halt famine. UNRWA Philippe Lazzarini, the Commissioner General of UNRWA [UN Relief and Works Agency], thanked Germany today for its contribution of 45 million Euros for UNRWA’s activities in Jordan, in Lebanon, Syria and the West Bank. He said on social media that with these new contributions, Germany is now among UNRWA’s top donors. He added that the solidarity of Germany is a proof of the commitment to supporting Palestine refugees and their right to a dignified life. SYRIA The UN’s Humanitarian Coordinator for Syria, Adam Abdelmoula, deplored in a statement yesterday the killing of a humanitarian staff member in Deir-ez-Zor City, which is in the north-east of Syria, and that came as a result of ongoing hostilities. On Tuesday, 26 March, a colleague from the World Health Organization was killed when his building was among those hit by multiple airstrikes across Deir-ez-Zor Governorate. Several other civilians were also reportedly killed in the attacks, according to what local sources are telling us. Mr. Abdelmoula said this attack is a reminder of the daily continued danger and devastation that civilians are facing in Syria as the crisis has now entered its 14th year. He called on all parties to the conflict to take constant care to spare the civilian population and civilian objects in their military operations, of course in accordance with international humanitarian law.
