The Impact of Social Media on Communication

The development of digital technology as well as social media has brought a significant effect on information management, including both communication and services provision. According to an international survey conducted in 18 countries, the main reason for using the internet is the access to e-mail, which involves the subsequent opportunity of gathering various data about other people. Thus, two opposing opinions concerning the impact of social media on society dominate among scientists. Some claim that the excessive use of the Internet and social media inhibits appropriate interpersonal skills development, while others persuade that the utilization of sites, which offer constant texting, posting, blogging, and messaging facilities contributes to relational progress. Thus, social media is the point of collision of various theories and thoughts concerning the affect it provides, presenting a rather ambiguous social value and consequently generating the necessity for further research as in research papers for dummies

Digital technology and social networks affect people’s social and interpersonal skills in different ways. Both offer quite significant benefits in the field of social interaction, social capital, and identity development. They ensure a better integration into any community as well as present a tryst for acquiring information concerning social events. Social Network Sites contribute to the maintenance of preexisting relationships by means of constant connectivity and the ability for the additional expressions of affinity such as wall posting, photo sharing, etc. The instances of positive feedback on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram can increase the general well-being and self-esteem of young users, thus having a rather positive effect on their psychological health. On the other hand, SNS eradicate a face-to-face communication. Up-to date inventions and innovations provide an opportunity to exchange information online, but they also cause particular transformations in the field of interaction process. Consequently, the excessive use of online messaging leads to the inability to start and maintain a conversation in real life. When interpersonal interaction skills deteriorate, problem solving and conflict resolution abilities are also in decline. Thus, such a degradation in communication skills can negatively affect socialization, family relationships, employment, etc.

Social media actually makes people less social because modern technologies provide a huge variety of opportunities to stay in touch virtually 24/7. Hence, there are no limits to the process of information exchange as nowadays, it is possible from almost any place on the planet and with every person who has a mobile device. Nevertheless, such an increased attachment to gadgets has led to the emergence of a so-called phenomenon of ‘phubbing’. This notion refers to humiliating behavior in a social setting, expressed by looking at the phone instead of paying attention to the interlocutor in particular and to the immediate environment in general. However, in this phubbing behavior, so-called immediacy cues, the signals of wordless interaction, are absent. For instance, there is no interactive category such as body language that includes eye contact, gestures, facial expressions etc. Such a behavior results in the creation of a certain social absence, which means that people are physically present in the face-to-face interaction but they are mentally disorientated. Fear of Missing Out, or FOMO, is another outcome of social media obsession. Thus, Fear of Missing Out is a particular psychological state that refers to pervasive apprehension of missing certain social events or interactions. Such a disorder has an immense impact on people’s behavior, thus resulting in some sort of social networks addiction. People suffer from an intrusive desire to interrupt conversation to answer a phone call or update their Facebook accounts as soon as they wake up; they do not part with their digital devices either in the bathroom or during a family dinner, permanently being ready to check a message. In addition, digital technologies can negatively affect children-parent relations. The excessive use of social media anticipates the threat of family intercourse transformation since it has a rather harmful influence on the psychological aspect of upbringing of the younger generation, which results in a rise in ADHD syndrome in children, screen addiction, etc.. The increased usage of SNS among adolescences contributes to the permanent state of aggression and social isolation. At the same time, the era of digital technologies brings rather dramatic changes to parenting techniques and styles, resulting in the absence of discipline and mutual substraction in the process of upbringing.

Social networks and digital communications will continue to shape society in the following way. The technological evolution seems to continue the integration with the human communication process and rooting into it. Global social media usage will continue its upward movement by providing a more considerable amount of data, which will delude the masses and aggravate the problem of excessive use of social networking sites. Information sharing over the Internet will tightly interweave into daily life, thus making this process absolutely invisible, flowing like electrical impulses. People will see the world through the multiple layers of data. Consequently, this will dramatically change many social practices such as job interviewing, dating, professional networking, and policing.

Thus, social network sites have greatly changed the way of interaction in society. The following metamorphoses result both in lack of face-to-face communication and a widespread digital technologies addiction. People become socially inept and passive members of society whose alienated and closed characters prevent them from any intrapersonal relations. At the same time, excessive connectivity deletes the borders between people all over the globe, providing unhindered opportunities for staying in touch. Digital technologies change the form of communication, but they also contribute to the information field expansion.
