Mushroom anatomy is fascinating. Our fungal friends are known to have their own communication networks, and their DNA and cellular structure is similar to our own. Specific fungal receptors are also important to our immune health and longevity.
So what are mushrooms made of? Check out this guide to basic mushroom anatomy for more information.
Stems and Caps
These are the most prominent parts of mushrooms. When mushroom spores germinate seeds, they form a small mushroom under the ground that grows to full maturity during its fruiting phase. Comparable to plant seeds, spores are the reproductive units of the mushroom. At this point, the stem and cap make up the mushroom’s form. Then, during the maturation phase, the fungus forms its body.
Fungi stems and caps come in all forms of unique colors and patterns. For a few examples, you can check out lion’s mane and turkey tail mushrooms, each of which are unique in dramatically different ways.
The Mycelium
The mycelium is what’s introduced to the mushroom substrate. The mushroom substrate is a material in which the mycelium can grow. It’s the underground part of the mushroom that we seldom see. Fungi “communicate” using electrical impulses that travel throughout the mycelium network. The electrical impulses bear a striking similarity to human speech. The mycelium also breaks down and absorbs organic matter into nutrients that the mushroom can then absorb and use as nourishment.
The Gills
Mushroom gills are the part of the mushroom where the spores are produced and dispersed. Gills look unique to each mushroom, usually appearing as teeth or tubes on the underside of the mushroom cap. Some mushrooms, such as turkey tail, have pores instead. The gills are essential parts of the anatomy of a mushroom.
Mushroom anatomy is simple. By understanding the anatomy of a mushroom, you’ll better know what to look for when it’s time to grow them yourself.

United Nations Video: Afghanistan: Women, Peace and Security - Joint Security Council Media Stakeout | United Nations
Comments to the media by Tanja Fajon, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia, and President of the Security Council for the month of September, joined by representatives of Ecuador, France, Guyana, Japan, Malta, the Republic of Korea, Sierra Leone, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States of America, as Security Council signatories of the Statement of Shared Commitments for the Principles of Women, Peace and Security.
Reading a joint press statement, Slovenia’s Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Tanja Fajon said that the “systematic and comprehensive nature” of the restrictions “on the exercise of human rights of women and girls” in Afghanistan “may amount to gender persecution and must stop now.”
Tanja Fajon, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia, joined by joined by representatives of Ecuador, France, Guyana, Japan, Malta, the Republic of Korea, Sierra Leone, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States of America delivered today (18 Sep) a statement as Security Council signatories of the Statement of Shared Commitments for the Principles of Women, Peace and Security.
She said, “There is no comparison for this situation anywhere around the world. Afghanistan is a state party to various human rights instruments, and it is therefore bound by relevant international obligations and commitments, and must comply with them, including the convention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women.”
She continued, “We condemn, once again, the issuance of more than 70 addicts and decrees restricting the enjoyment of the rights of women and girls issued by the Taliban, including the ban on education for women and girls beyond sixth grade, and codification and expansion of many of these restrictions with the so-called law on promotion of virtue and prevention of vice.”
She also said, “This decision and the enforcement powers granted to inspectors extend and widen the already intolerable restrictions on the enjoyment of women's and girls' human rights and fundamental freedoms, including by completely erasing them from public life through silencing their voices.”
She stressed, “These actions by the Taliban are further obstacle in efforts to have increased engagement between the Taliban and the international community towards improving the lives of the Afghan people.”
She added, “Furthermore, we underline the importance of the work of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan and demand the Taliban to let him fully carry out his mandate.”
She concluded, “We also request the Secretary General of the United Nations to ensure that restrictions of women and girls are discussed in engagement with all Afghan political actors, including the Taliban.”

United Nations Video: Education Cannot Wait: Annual Results Report - Press Conference | United Nations
Press conference by Yasmine Sherif, Executive Director of Education Cannot Wait (ECW) on ECW's Annual Results Report.
----------------------------------------------------------------
A new Education Cannot Wait (ECW) Results Report highlights significant learning outcomes achieved for children and adolescents in crisis settings and calls for urgent additional donor support to meet the rapidly escalating needs.
The global community is falling behind on its promise to ensure ‘quality education for all’ by 2030. Armed conflicts, forced displacement, climate change, and other emergencies and protracted crises have left more than 224 million crisis-affected children in urgent need of education support, a sharp rise from 75 million in 2016.
Despite these growing needs, funding for education in emergencies and protracted crises dropped for the first time in a decade, according to Education Cannot Wait’s ‘Results Against All Odds: 2023 Annual Results Report’, launched today in New York.
Yasmine Sherif, Executive Director of the organization spoke to reporters today (17 Sep) in New York.
She reiterated, “We use the United Nations humanitarian and the resident coordinator system. We work in close partnership with the education Ministries. We work with all our encounter partners in the UN system, in the communities, in the civil society, in the teachers’ associations. So through joint programming, you can reach and keep reaching more because the system is established.”
The Executive Director added that 80 percent of ECW’s investments have led to academic improvements that are by tests. Seventy-two percent shows significant improvements in children’s social and emotional learning, “meaning also healing through the mental health and psycho-social services provided,” she added.
Education Cannot Wait (ECW), the global fund for education in emergencies and protracted crises within the United Nations, and its strategic partners continue to defy the odds, delivering life-saving, life-sustaining and multi-year investments in education to the world’s most vulnerable children and adolescents.
Since ECW became operational in 2017, its investments have reached 11 million children and adolescents, including 5.6 million girls and boys in 2023 alone. This reach is unprecedented. Yet, much more resources are needed to meet the needs of the over 224 million children, adolescents and their teachers in need of urgent support.
To date, the Fund has mobilized more than US$1.6 billion from public and private donors. However, $600 million urgently needs to be mobilized in donor contributions for ECW and its strategic partners to reach a total of 20 million children and adolescents with inclusive, quality education by the end of its 2023-2026 strategic plan period.
On the impact of climate change on education, Sherif said, “climate induced disasters have nearly doubled in 2022, there were 14 percent and into in 2023, just one year later, 27 precent directly impacting education.”
She also said, “By investing in building schools that are resilient to a flood or another form of climate disasters, earthquake, by investing in curriculum to teach children how to manage Mother Earth in their societies, you can help prevent it.”
The Executive Director concluded that education is the best vehicle for climate prevention.

BBC News Video: US Federal Reserve cuts interest rates in first reduction in over four years | BBC News
The US central bank has cut interest rates by more than expected in its first reduction in over four years.
The Federal Reserve said it would lower the target for its key lending rate by 0.5 percentage points, to the range of 4.75%-5%.
The widely expected cut is bigger than many analysts had predicted just a week ago, and comes as officials have noted increasing concern about rising unemployment rates.
The move will bring relief to borrowers across the US, who have been contending with interest rates hovering at the highest levels in more than two decades.
Officials signalled that further cuts were likely to follow before the end of the year.

ODN Video: French Man Admits to Letting Dozens of Men Rape his Drugged Wife
Dominique Pelicot, 71, has admitted to drugging his wife, Gisèle, and allowing over 50 men to rape her while she was unconscious.
For more than 10 years, Pelicot drugged his wife, posted ads online, and filmed the assaults. Police found thousands of videos, leading to the arrests of 72 men. Fifty of them are now on trial.
In court, Pelicot begged for Gisèle’s forgiveness, admitting his crimes were "unforgivable." Some of the accused claim they didn’t know she was unconscious, believing it was consensual.
Gisèle has waived her anonymity, saying she never suspected her husband of nearly 50 years.
The trial has sparked a national debate on consent, marital rape, and abuse.
Pelicot, who blames his actions on past trauma, says he knew it was wrong but couldn’t stop.
He now faces charges alongside the 50 men, who could face up to 20 years in prison.

The blast happened almost simultaneously across Lebanon on Tuesday.
At least 12 people, including two children, have been killed and nearly 3,000 people were injured.
Most of the injuries occurred in the Beirut area while around 750 people hurt were in the south of Lebanon.
Hezbollah and the Lebanese government blamed Israel for what appeared to be a remote attack.
