Consumer Electronics Show 2024

If you are a tech enthusiast like me, you probably know about the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), is the annual trade show that showcases the latest and greatest innovations in consumer technology. But do you know how it all started? In this blog post, I will take you on a journey through the history of CES, from its humble beginnings in 1967 to its present-day status as the global stage for innovation.

Consumer Electronics Show 2024: History, Trends and Future of the Technology Industry

The first CES was held in New York City from June 24 to 28, 1967. It was a spinoff of the Chicago Music Show, which had been the main event for exhibiting consumer electronics since 1924. The event had 17,500 attendees and over 100 exhibitors, including Motorola, RCA, Sony, and Zenith. The kickoff speaker was Motorola chairman Bob Galvin introduced the first portable television and the first rectangular color TV. Other products on display were pocket radios, TVs with integrated circuits and stereos with FM radio.

The show was such a success that it became an annual event, alternating between New York and Chicago until 1978, when it moved to Las Vegas for the winter edition and continued to be held in Chicago for the summer edition. In 1970, Philips unveiled the first-ever home VCR, the N1500 videocassette recorder, which cost $900 and could record up to one hour of TV programs. In 1974, Atari demonstrated the first home video game console, the Atari 2600, which launched the video game industry. In 1976, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak showed off his prototype of the Apple I computer, which he sold for $666.66. In 1979, Sony introduced the Walkman, the first portable music player that revolutionized personal audio.

In the 1980s and 1990s, CES continued to be the platform for launching groundbreaking products and technologies, such as the CD player, the camcorder, the DVD player, HDTV, satellite radio, and digital cable. However, as the consumer electronics industry became more diverse and competitive, CES faced some challenges and changes. In 1985, Microsoft decided to launch its trade show, COMDEX, which focused on computer hardware and software. In 1995, a group of video game companies broke away from CES and created their event, E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo), which became the premier showcase for gaming. In 1998, CES decided to drop the summer edition and focus on a once-a-year format in Las Vegas.

Since then, CES has grown by more than 10-fold and now encompasses both traditional and non-traditional tech industries. CES attracts more than 180,000 attendees and over 4,500 exhibitors from around the world every year. It features keynote speeches by industry leaders and celebrities, panel discussions by experts and influencers, innovation awards for outstanding products and technologies, and special events such as concerts and parties. CES covers a wide range of product categories, such as 3D printing, 5G technologies, accessibility, artificial intelligence, audio technologies, blockchain, digital health, drones, education, entertainment and content, fintech, fitness and wearables, gaming and esports, smart home and appliances, robotics and more.

CES is not only a trade show but also a cultural phenomenon that reflects the trends and aspirations of our society. It is where brands get business done, meet new partners, and where the industry’s sharpest minds take the stage to unveil their latest releases and boldest breakthroughs. It is where consumers get a glimpse of what’s coming next in technology and how it will impact their lives. It is where media outlets from around the world report on the most exciting news and stories from the tech world.

CES is truly the most powerful tech event in the world — the proving ground for breakthrough technologies and global innovators. And it is not stopping anytime soon. The next CES is scheduled from Jan. 9-12 2024 in Las Vegas. The Consumer Electronic Show 2024 is just getting started at the time of this post, and we are here to bring you the latest trends and innovations from the world of tech. From smart home devices to wearable gadgets, from virtual reality to artificial intelligence, here are some of the highlights that caught our eye.

- Smart Home Devices: The smart home market is booming, and CES 2024 showcased some of the most advanced and user-friendly products that can make your life easier and more comfortable. For example, the Smart Fridge by Samsung can scan your groceries and suggest recipes based on what you have. It can also order food online, play music, and display your calendar. The Smart Mirror by LG can analyze your skin condition, give you personalized beauty tips, and let you try different makeup products virtually. The Smart Toilet by Kohler can monitor your health, adjust the temperature and pressure, and even play soothing sounds.

- Wearable Gadgets: Wearable technology is not just about fitness trackers and smartwatches anymore. CES 2024 introduced some of the most innovative and stylish wearable gadgets that can enhance your health, entertainment, and productivity. For example, the Smart Glasses by Intel can project holographic images onto your retina, allowing you to see augmented reality content without a screen. The Smart Ring by Motiv can track your heart rate, sleep quality, and activity level, and also act as a security device that can unlock your phone or laptop with a finger gesture. The Smart Jacket by Levi's can connect to your smartphone via Bluetooth, and let you control music, navigation, and calls with touch-sensitive buttons on the sleeve.

- Virtual Reality: Virtual reality is not just a niche hobby anymore. CES 2024 demonstrated how VR can be used for various purposes, such as education, entertainment, and socialization. For example, the VR Classroom by Oculus can create immersive learning environments for students and teachers, where they can interact with each other and explore different subjects. The VR Cinema by Sony can provide a realistic movie-watching experience, where you can choose your seat, adjust the lighting and sound, and even chat with other viewers. The VR Social Network Facebook can connect you with your friends and family in a virtual space, where you can chat, play games, and share memories.

- Artificial Intelligence: Artificial intelligence is becoming more ubiquitous and intelligent every day. CES 2024 showcased some of the most impressive and useful applications of AI that can make your life smarter and simpler. For example, the AI Assistant by Google can understand natural language, context, and emotions, and help you with various tasks, such as booking a flight, ordering a pizza, or playing a trivia game. The AI Camera by Canon can recognize faces, objects, and scenes, and automatically adjust the settings to take the best photos. The AI Robot by Honda can learn from your behavior, preferences, and habits, and assist you with household chores, personal care, and companionship.

I can’t wait to see what surprises it will bring us this year! How about you? Are you planning to attend or follow CES online? What are you most looking forward to seeing at CES? Let me know in the comments below!

Noon briefing by Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General. Highlights: - Lesotho - Syria - Syria/Humanitarian - U.N. Observer Disengagement Force - Occupied Palestinian Territory - Central African Republic/Peacekeeping - Central African Republic - Security Council - Tropical Cyclone Chido - Myanmar - Ethiopia-Somalia SYRIA/HUMANITARIAN Meanwhile, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says the UN and our partners continue to support the response in Syria as the security situation permits. Healthcare across the country continues to be disrupted against the backdrop of a fluid security situation. Some facilities have had to close due to looting and lack of medical staff and medicine. In north-east Syria, our health partners have activated more than 20 mobile medical units for critical cases and to provide primary care consultations. And in the north-west, 30 mobile medical teams have been deployed to provide basic healthcare, vaccinations and maternal care. We also continue to support displaced people and deliver aid - including food, tents, winter clothes, hygiene kits and cash. However, our humanitarian colleagues tell us that more support is needed to reach more people and support host communities. For its part, the UN Refugee Agency says that although figures are not yet available, thousands of Syrian refugees have started to return to Syria from Lebanon through the official Masnaa border point, as well as other border crossings. At the same time, some Syrians have fled into Lebanon. UNHCR also says that, in the past 72 hours, they have been able to resume through their local partners some of their activities in areas which are now more secure. For example, UNHCR supports 114 community centres all over Syria, which provide a whole range of services to Syrians and to the internally displaced, but also to those who are returning. OCCUPIED PALESTINIAN TERRITORY Turning to Gaza, Muhannad Hadi, the Humanitarian Coordinator for the Occupied Palestinian Territory, said today that he is very concerned about the rapidly deteriorating security and humanitarian situation in Gaza. In recent days, he said, multiple strikes across the Gaza Strip have resulted in scores of reported fatalities, and numerous injuries, with women and children among the casualties. He also expressed concern at the insecurity that has hampered the work of UN aid convoys, including the looting of a 70-truck convoy that was traveling at the Kerem Shalom crossing on Wednesday and the looting of four out of five trucks leaving the Kissufim crossing that same day.  Mr. Hadi said that the principles of distinction, proportionality and precautions in attacks must be respected at all times. He called on all parties to ensure the protection of civilians and the safe and unimpeded passage of humanitarian aid.  OCHA says that since 6 October, the UN and our partners have tried to coordinate 137 missions to those parts of the north. More than 90 per cent – that’s about 124 planned missions – were denied outright. The other 13 were approved but then faced impediments along the way. Since Monday, we have submitted 16 requests – that’s between three and five each day. Almost all were flat-out denied. The only mission to get the greenlight was prevented from moving into all the areas it set out to reach. OCHA stresses that once again that humanitarian movements must be facilitated across Gaza – including to areas in the north, where thousands of Palestinians are facing apocalyptic conditions after almost 10 weeks under siege. I would also remind you that the Famine Review Committee has said already on 8 November, there was a strong likelihood that famine was imminent in northern Gaza and called for immediate action, “within days not weeks”. SECURITY COUNCIL Staying in the region but coming back to the Security Council, this morning, the Special Representative for the Secretary-General for Central Africa, Abdou Abarry, said the challenges the world faces are also impacting Central Africa region. The region has not escaped security crises, climatic emergencies or geopolitical rivalries. He said his office intends to ensure that the region benefits as much as possible from the momentum generated by the Pact for the Future, in terms of conflict prevention, sustainable development, reform of the international financial system and the Security Council, as well as other priority issues for the sub-region. He also said he is following with great attention the preparations for several elections due to take place in the region next year and in 2026, noting that countries including Chad, Cameroon, Gabon and the Central African Republic have requested electoral assistance from the UN, and most have already received needs assessment missions. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres addressed the Parliament of Lesotho, stressing the fact that Africa has enormous potential, however, deep injustices are denying Africa’s rightful place on the world stage - mainly, not having a permanent seat in the Security Council. Guterres underscored that nearly 80 years after the creation of the Security Council, Africa still awaits even a single permanent seat. “This hurts Africa, but it also hurts the Council – its effectiveness, its legitimacy, and its credibility.” “From Sudan to the Sahel, conflicts rage and communities suffer. These crises demand not just global attention, but African leadership. Yet Africa has no permanent voice when the world decides on matters of war and peace… in Africa. That is unacceptable – and it must change,” the UN Chief reiterated. Guterres also reiterated that Africa needs climate justice, he said, “Landlocked and Least Developed countries like yours are especially vulnerable. They require special support and easier access to finance and technology.” The UN chief also underscored that the UN will remain Lesotho’s partner in the journey toward sustainable and inclusive development. The Secretary-General concluded, “Africa is crafting a vision of transformation, built on the foundations of justice and solidarity. This is your moment to show the world that from the challenges of today, a new era of hope and equality can be born.” On Friday (13 Dec), Guterres will visit the Katse Dam, where he will see for himself the Highlands Water Project – which is a perfect example of the development projects undertaken by the country. This is his first time visiting the country, and it coincides with the Kingdom’s celebration of the bicentenary of the Basotho nation. Earlier today (12 Dec), the Secretary-General discussed with His Majesty King Letsie III several topics, including the progress Lesotho has made in recent years, and the challenges it faces. Guterres also reaffirmed the continued support of the United Nations to the Kingdom of Lesotho. The Secretary-General also held discussions with the Prime Minister, Ntsokoane Matekane and some members of his cabinet. Guterres said was there to show solidarity with Africa but also with Lesotho in particular – a land-locked country with only one neighbour. Lesotho, he said, demonstrates how unfair the global financial system is, and that it should change.

Diary of a CEO host Steven Bartlett is amplifying harmful health misinformation on his number-one ranked podcast, a BBC investigation has found. Recent claims from guests - including that cancer can be treated by following a keto diet, rather than proven treatments - were allowed by the Dragons' Den star with little or no challenge. Experts have told us failing to question these disproven claims is dangerous because it creates a distrust of conventional medicine. In an analysis of 15 health-related podcast episodes, BBC World Service found each contained an average of 14 harmful health claims that went against extensive scientific evidence. Flight Studio - the podcast production company owned by Mr Bartlett - said guests were offered "freedom of expression" and were "thoroughly researched". Inside this warehouse in Damascus, Syria, are stacks of the banned drug Captagon. The illegal drug trade that funded Bashar Al-Assad’s oppressive regime in Syria is being uncovered by the opposition fighters who toppled his government. Captagon is an addictive amphetamine which, when consumed in high doses, can cause euphoria and paranoia. Trafficking of captagon dwarfed legal exports from Syria under the regime, effectively turning the country into a narco state. Maher Al-Assad, Bashar’s brother, is accused of being the key facilitator of the trade and drug producer. In another factory in Syria, previously used to make crisps, the former owner said Maher seized the premises. #syria #basharalassad #hts Subscribe here: http://bit.ly/ODNsubs TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@ondemandnews Twitter: https://twitter.com/ODN Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ODN/ If you wish to purchase any of our clips for commercial use, please visit: http://www.itnproductions.co.uk/news/
