Beginner’s Guide: Vacuum Metalizing and Its Uses

Vacuum metalizing is an industrial coating and shielding method that is common in almost everyone’s daily lives—even if they’re unaware. In our beginner’s guide, we’ll break down the key things everyone should know about vacuum metalizing, from what it is to its benefits and uses.

What Is Vacuum Metalizing?

In basic terms, vacuum metalizing is the process of creating a layer of metal—or coating—onto a substrate of another material. The process involves heating a metal coating material in a pressure-free, vacuum chamber until it vaporizes.

Fun Fact: Vacuum metalizing is sometimes referred to as Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD).

The vaporized metal condensates in the chamber and forms a layer of the substrate material. You can think of the process as spraying an object or material with a liquid metal coating. Many different materials are used for vacuum metalizing, but the most common is aluminum.

What Are the Benefits of Vacuum Metalizing?

There are many benefits to the vacuum metalizing process, but it distinguishes itself most as the more affordable and environmentally friendly method. Vacuum metalizing is much more affordable than other shielding and coating methods because it’s relatively streamlined and straightforward.

Vacuum metalizing is also quite environmentally friendly as it doesn’t produce chemical fumes like other methods. The entire process occurs within an enclosed chamber, which prevents any potentially harmful chemical fumes from escaping into the air and makes it a safe procedure.

What Are the Uses of Vacuum Metalizing?

Even if you’ve never heard of vacuum metalizing, you’ve likely come across products that utilized the method. There are many industrial applications for vacuum metalizing, but it’s also used to create decorative metallic finishes, so you may have seen it on all kinds of items like:

  • Sporting goods
  • Portable aluminum drinking containers
  • Cosmetic packaging
  • Automotive parts

Perhaps the most common use for vacuum metalizing is creating protective shields for electronics from electromagnetic interference. EMI shielding with vacuum metalizing ensures that other radio frequencies and electronics don’t’ interfere with your phone and cause it to malfunction and calls to drop out.

For most of your life, you’ve likely had a product of vacuum metalizing in your pocket without realizing it! We hope our beginner’s guide has been helpful to you in learning more about vacuum metalizing and its many uses.

Noon Briefing by Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General. Highlights: -Secretary-General -Occupied Palestinian Territory -Italy -Security Council -Democratic Republic of the Congo -Haiti -Syria -Caribbean HIV/Syphilis -Migration report -Trailblazer award -Guest today SECRETARY-GENERAL The Secretary-General said this morning that he is disturbed and distressed by the renewed military activity in Rafah by the Israeli Defence Forces. He said that the closure of both the Rafah and Karem Shalom crossings is especially damaging to an already dire humanitarian situation. They must be re-opened immediately, he said. The Secretary-General urged the Government of Israel to stop any further escalation. He reiterated his appeal for both parties to show political courage and spare no effort to secure an agreement now. The Secretary-General added that international humanitarian law is unequivocal: civilians must be protected – whether they leave Rafah or whether they stay. He warned that an assault on Rafah would be a strategic mistake, a political calamity, and a humanitarian nightmare. OCCUPIED PALESTINIAN TERRITORY According to OCHA [Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs] colleagues, they say that yesterday’s evacuation orders from the Israeli military have already resulted in the forced displacement of tens of thousands of people. Many of them have been uprooted multiple times over the past seven months. Civilians in Gaza must be protected and have their basic needs met, whether they move or they stay. Those who leave must have enough time to do so, as well as a safe route and a safe places to go. As you are aware, both crossings, as we said, are closed. This means that we cannot bring in humanitarian assistance. We cannot access the nutrition supplies we need to treat more than 3,000 children with acute malnutrition. And we cannot access the fuel needed to power our response efforts. UN Women, in a new report, says that Rafah now hosts more than 700,000 women and girls who have nowhere else to go. It says that 93 per cent of women respondents express feeling unsafe within their own homes or at displaced locations. Over 80 per cent of women report feelings of depression, 66 per cent are not able to sleep, and over 70 per cent have heightened anxiety or nightmares. And that is according to a polling they have done. ITALY The President of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, addressed the General Assembly this morning, and the Secretary-General spoke at that meeting. He affirmed that Italy has consistently demonstrated its leadership at the United Nations in defending peace, human rights and sustainable development – hosting many UN bodies and deploying its forces in peacekeeping missions. Today, the Secretary-General added, these shared values are under threat. The Secretary-General said that as discussions ahead of the Summit of the Future enter a key phase, Italy’s voice is more necessary than ever to bridge divides, to build trust and to find solutions. He said that Italy’s priorities as G7 President – defense of the rules-based international system, dialogue with the global South and “human-centered” artificial intelligence governance – echo this vision. Those remarks have been shared with you. And also, we put out last night the remarks that the Secretary-General made before his meeting with President Mattarella in his office, and before he hosted a dinner for him, in which the Secretary-General said that Italy is always present in the UN’s activities - present in climate action, human rights and the rule of law, peacekeeping and sustainable development. Those remarks were also shared with you. Full highlights: https://www.un.org/sg/en/content/noon-briefing-highlight?date%5Bvalue%5D%5Bdate%5D=07%20May%202024

Replay from 6 May- The General Assembly convened its 78th plenary session to discuss the use of veto power in the Security Council on outer space weapons. Explaining the Russian Federation veto in the Security Council, Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya 6 May told the General Assembly that “despite its beautiful sounding title” the United States drafted resolution on the non-placement of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destructions in outer space “not only did not address the declared goal” but “could have entailed far reaching consequences for the entire disarmament process.” Nebenzya told the GA that “another very dangerous element of the American draft” was that it “clearly attempts to use the Security Council to introduce new restrictions which have not previously been enshrined anywhere - including the Outer Space Treaty, which raises serious doubts from a legal point of view.” He said, “imposing such obligations without preliminary expert legal and technical discussions is inadmissible.” Ambassador Yamazaki Kazuyuki of Japan, which co-drafted the resolution, told the General Assembly that “outer space must remain a domain free of weapons of mass destruction.” Kazuyuki said, “this use of the veto casts serious doubt on Russia's commitment to the peaceful use and exploration of outer space and the fundamental principles enshrined in the Outer Space Treaty.” The veto, he said, “is yet another example the same permanent members’ disrespect for the global non-proliferation regime” and “such irresponsible action once again disgraces the august body of the Security Council, which bears the primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security.” On 24 April the Council rejected the draft resolution, introduced by Japan and the United States, by a vote of 13 in favour to one against, with one abstention (China), that would have had the 15-member organ call on “all States, in particular those with major space capabilities, to contribute actively to the objective of the peaceful use of outer space and of the prevention of an arms race in outer space.” By the draft, the Council would have called on all nations “to refrain from actions contrary to that objective and to the relevant existing treaties in the interest of maintaining international peace and security and promoting international cooperation”. Council members also rejected an amendment tabled by China and Russia, by a vote of seven in favour to seven against, with one abstention, failing to reach the required nine votes for an adoption.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres reiterated his appeal for the Government of Israel and the leadership of Hamas to “show the political courage and spare no effort to secure an agreement now,” adding that this is a “crucial opportunity” that the region – and the world – “cannot afford to miss.” Guterres today (07 May) spoke to reporters in New York. The chief of the world body said, “We are at a decisive moment for the Palestinian and Israeli people and for the fate of the entire region. An agreement between the Government of Israel and the leadership of Hamas is essential to stop the unbearable suffering of Palestinians in Gaza and of the hostages and their families. It would be tragic if weeks of intense diplomatic activity for peace in Gaza, yield no ceasefire. No release of hostages. And a devastating offensive in Rafah.” Guterres highlighted, “I am disturbed and distressed by the renewed military activity in Rafah by the Israeli Defence Forces. The closure of both the Rafah and Karem Shalom crossings is especially damaging to an already dire humanitarian situation. They must be re-opened immediately.” “Just to give one example,” the Secretary-General said, “we risk running out of fuel this evening.” The UN chief urged the Government of Israel to “stop any escalation, and engage constructively in the ongoing diplomatic talks.” Guterres asked, “After more than 1,100 Israelis killed in the Hamas terror attacks of 7 October … after more than 34,000 Palestinians killed in Gaza, haven’t we seen enough? Haven’t civilians suffered enough death and destruction?” “Make no mistake – a full-scale assault on Rafah will be a human catastrophe. Countless more civilian casualties. Countless more families forced to flee yet again – with nowhere safe to go,” the Secretary-General stressed. He continued, “Rafah is the epicenter of humanitarian operations in Gaza. Attacking Rafah will further upend our efforts to support people in dire humanitarian straits as famine looms.” Guterres reiterated, “International humanitarian law is unequivocal: civilians must be protected – whether they leave Rafah or stay in the city. International humanitarian law must be respected by both parties.” He also reminded Israel of “its obligation to facilitate the safe and unimpeded access of humanitarian aid and staff into and across Gaza.” Guterres said, “Even the best friends of Israel are clear: An assault on Rafah would be a strategic mistake, a political calamity, and a humanitarian nightmare.” The UN chief appealed to all those with influence over Israel to “do everything in their power to help avert even more tragedy.” He concluded, “The international community has a shared responsibility to promote a humanitarian ceasefire, the unconditional release of all hostages, and a massive surge in life-saving aid. It is time for the parties to seize the opportunity and secure a deal for the sake of their own people.”

The Israeli military shared video footage of its soldiers entering the Gaza side of the Rafah crossing on Tuesday. The IDF announced that the 401st Brigade entered the Rafah crossing assuming "operational control" but adding that the operation was “not over”.  These photos show Israeli tanks operating near the Rafah crossing, where the Gaza Strip meets Egypt, a crucial entry point for international aid into the territory. The military, facing criticism from aid agencies who operate at the border, stated it had intelligence suggesting the crossing was "being used for terrorist purposes," but didn't offer any evidence.  Subscribe here: http://bit.ly/ODNsubs TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@ondemandnews Twitter: https://twitter.com/ODN Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ODN/ If you wish to purchase any of our clips for commercial use, please visit: http://www.itnproductions.co.uk/news/

To the biggest elections in the world now, in India, where opposition parties say the government is using arrests and detentions to stop them campaigning - calling it a "nail in the coffin of free and fair elections". [Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe] This week police issued a summons to a Congress Party chief minister over allegations his staff doctored a video of the interior minister. Meanwhile, there are reports a prominent opposition figure - Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal - might be released on bail, weeks after he was imprisoned over - as yet unproven - corruption allegations. For the last fortnight, America's tented protest movement has spread from campus to campus, seemingly unabated by political condemnation. But the last forty-eight hours have seen hundreds of arrests, with the Los Angeles Police Department clearing an encampment at UCLA - hot on the heels of the mass arrests at Columbia University in New York. (Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe) Stung by criticism from Republicans and Democrats alike for his lack of comment about the unrest, President Biden condemned the violence and vandalism, but defended the right to peaceful protest. ----------------------- Follow us: Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/Channel4News/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/Channel4News TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@c4news Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/channel4news/
