Play Video: Boosting Inclusive Development: A Vision from a Nobel Laureate | Africa Perspectives

The IMF’s African Department is pleased to host Michael Kremer, Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago, where he directs the Development Innovation Lab. He is the joint winner of the 2019 Nobel Prize in Economics for the “experimental approach to alleviating global poverty.”  While African countries are grappling with the fallout of exogenous shocks like Russia’s war in Ukraine and climate change, the continent’s leaders are also trying to tackle persistent structural issues. Healthcare services are under strain, as is education, with low enrollment and high dropout rates for children who in the next 5–10 years will provide about half of the world’s increase in working-age population. Agriculture, a vital sector for food security and economic growth in the region, is constrained by low productivity, the impact of climate change, and limited access to modern technologies. Furthermore, economic growth remains stifled by insufficient investment and infrastructure, weak institutions, high unemployment, and income inequality. Join us for a conversation between Professor Kremer and the IMF’s African Department Director, Abebe Aemro Selassie, to learn more about the key measures policymakers can take to address regional challenges as well as global ones like climate change and pandemics. Play Video: Experts Demand Pause to AI Development & Ocean Census Begins | WEF | Top Stories of the Week

This week's top stories of the week include: 0:15 Why we need to consider AI development - Berkeley professor Stuart Russell is one of the world’s leading experts on AI, and one of more than 1,000 experts who recently signed an open letter calling for a 6-month pause in the development of AI systems for safety reasons. "I think there's a lot of misunderstanding about the letter. Some people say it bans AI research and so on but what it really is saying is: we have developed this technology that's pretty powerful, but we haven't developed the regulation to go along with it. At the moment, the technology is moving very fast. Governments tend to move very slowly. So we need a pause on the development and release of still more powerful models so that, in a sense, regulation can catch up." 5:43 Germany's first 3D printed house - It took just 100 hours to print the walls thanks to a nozzle that moves at 1 metre per second. The fireplace, kitchen island and bathtub were all printed too. The house contains 160m2 of living space over 2 floors. It was designed by architects Mense Korte. Its walls are comprised of an inner and outer shell with insulation filling the gap between them. 7:11 Ocean search for 100,000 species begins - They’re launching dozens of explorations deep into the ocean to build a huge catalogue of as-yet-unknown marine life. An estimated 2.2 million species live in the ocean but just 10% of them have been discovered and named by scientists. It’s a race against time to document endangered marine animals before overfishing and climate change drive them to extinction. 8:56 How kids learn through play - These 3 to 5-year-olds are taking part in a programme called Play Labs. They spend their day on puzzles. Games outside playing with others and learning about the world. The programme boosts kids’ physical, social, cognitive and language development and helps them close the education gap with their peers. _____________________________________________ The World Economic Forum is the International Organization for Public-Private Cooperation. Play Video: Scientists have found microbes that eat plastic at cool temperatures.

Scientists have already discovered plenty of plastic-munching microbes. A global study in 2021 found 56 microbial species that can do this but most only get going at temperatures of 30˚C or above. Heating them up requires energy which means the process is both costly and carbon-emitting. Scientists from the Swiss Federal Institute WSL started looking in the Arctic and the Swiss Alps for microbes growing on buried plastic. They found 19 strains of bacteria and 15 strains of fungi. Most were able to break down plastics in the lab at 15˚C or lower. The scientists are now working to find the best-performing strain. They say this could pave the way for efficient and sustainable plastic recycling at lower temperatures. #science #recycling #microbes #sustainability #plasticpollution
