IMF Video: Europe: Turning the Recovery into Enduring Growth

Europe: Turning the Recovery into Enduring Growth
Play Video: Europe: Turning the Recovery into Enduring Growth

Europe has done remarkably well against a turbulent backdrop. After years of crises and their fallouts, a soft landing for the continent’s economies is within reach. Securing it will require careful calibration of macroeconomic policies. As the cyclical recovery runs its course, growth will increasingly depend on structural factors. Yet there are several formidable headwinds to growth, including weakening productivity, an aging population, and underinvestment. Navigating these headwinds to higher medium-term growth will require structural reform efforts that should begin now. For the EU, this means urgently tapping the significant potential from further European integration. Combined with complementary measures at the domestic level, these reforms would go to show once again how Europe can overcome even the most severe obstacles when acting decisively and together.   The just released IMF Regional Economic Outlook for Europe discusses the economic reform agenda needed to cope with these multiple challenges. The discussion will focus on what policymakers in Brussels and at the national level can and should do to return Europe to greater competitiveness and faster growth.    The Regional Economic Outlook will be presented by Mr. Alfred Kammer, Director of the European Department at the IMF. He will then be joined by Ms. Maria Demertzis, Senior Fellow at Bruegel, and Ms. Christiane Nickel, Deputy Director General of DG Economics at the European Central Bank, for a panel discussion moderated by Ms. Maria Tadeo, Europe Correspondent. https://www.imf.org/en/Publications/REO/EU/Issues/2024/04/05/regional-economic-outlook-europe-april-2024

The Global Gender Gap Index annually benchmarks the current state and evolution of gender parity across four key dimensions (Economic Participation and Opportunity, Educational Attainment, Health and Survival, and Political Empowerment). It is the longest-standing index tracking the progress of numerous countries’ efforts towards closing these gaps over time since its inception in 2006. China's growth engines seem to be slowing due to a range of factors, including an ageing population, a slowdown in productivity, and major challenges facing the private sector. Play Video: Mini-Factories in Space & Biodiversity Credits Explained | WEF | Top Stories of the Week

This week's top stories of the week include: 0:15 Mini-factories in space – Space Forge says its technology could revolutionize manufacturing. The satellites contain miniature manufacturing systems. They take advantage of the conditions in low-Earth orbit such as microgravity, extreme temperatures and a contaminant-free environment to forge materials that would be impossible to manufacture here on Earth. 1:53 Biodiversity credits explained – Nature is under unprecedented threat. Around 2 million plant and animal species could go extinct in the next few decades as climate change and habitat loss push ecosystems towards irreversible tipping points. To fight this crisis, experts are coming up with new ways to protect life on Earth by assigning value to the ecosystems around us. These innovations include biodiversity credits. 6:58 Nairobi switches to electric buses – Private minibuses called matatus are the main mode of public transport in Nairobi. Most matatus are old, diesel-powered and inefficient and 60% of the city’s population rely on them to get around. Electric mobility start-up BasiGo has built an all-electric alternative. The first bus rolled off its Nairobi production line in early 2024. Nairobi bus operators have already ordered 500 more. More than 90% of Kenya’s electricity is generated renewably, which means BasiGo’s buses are virtually emission-free. 8:40 How to build healthier cities – This architect designs buildings that bring communities together – Sumayya Vally grew up in post-Apartheid Pretoria, South Africa in what had been an Indian-only township and saw how division kept communities apart. Vally founded the Johannesburg-based architecture practice Counterspace to fight the built legacies of colonization and highlight the peaceful coexistence between communities. _____________________________________________ The World Economic Forum is the International Organization for Public-Private Cooperation. Voice actors Linnea Sage and Paul Skye Lehrman say they recorded their voices for a client who hired them for “academic research” and “tests for radio ads.” Years later, the couple were shocked to discover “AI versions” of their voices. In a video demonstration, they showed CNN’s Clare Duffy why they believe their voices were “stolen.” The voice actors’ lawsuit against Lovo, the company they claim is behind the AI voices, is just the latest in a recent string of legal actions brought against various tech companies by creatives, writers and artists who say their work was used without their permission to train AI systems that could ultimately compete with them. Such lawsuits have added to a growing wave of concerns over how the training of AI models, which requires huge swaths of data, could run afoul of copyright and intellectual property laws.
