IMF Video: Addressing Governance and Corruption Challenges in the response to Climate Change - COP28
Investing in climate change resilience requires large scale financing. The potential for corruption to exacerbate the challenge, undermine the effectiveness of the response and increase costs means that better governance must be at the heart of the climate response. Acting fast will mean leveraging the existing anticorruption architecture and catalyzing coalitions in a highly coordinated way. In this joint event with the World Bank, panelists will discuss corruption vulnerabilities that are specific to the green transition and how to address them.

World Economic Forum Video: Redesigned Wind Turbine & What Is Climate Justice? | WEF | Top Stories of the Week
This week's top stories of the week include:
0:15 This start-up has redesigned the wind turbine – It’s designed by US start-up Airloom. Which says it can generate the same amount of energy as a traditional turbine but at a fraction of the cost and size. It’s much smaller and uses far fewer materials, making it almost 10 times cheaper to build. Its design can generate electricity at one-third the cost of standard wind turbines. Its turbines should take up less space, too as conventional turbines have to be distanced from one another.
1:45 Cutting salt works as well as medication – Scientists have found that reducing salt intake by just 1 teaspoon per day can lower blood pressure as much as specific drugs for that purpose. Researchers put 213 people aged 50-75 on either a high- or low-sodium diet. After a week, the two groups swapped. The low-sodium diet led to a swift and pronounced drop in blood pressure roughly equal to a ‘first-line blood-pressure medication’, say the authors.
3:27 What is climate justice? – Climate change is a global crisis, but its impacts are felt unequally. For many, it's not just about rising temperatures and melting glaciers, but about the very survival of their communities.
6:11 How AI will open the world to disabled people – Victor Pineda, a Hispanic man in a wheelchair and using a machine to help him breathe, shares his experience of growing up in a world that wasn't designed for him. Denied education in his home country due to his disability, he found an opportunity in the US, where laws protected his right to learn. He sees AI as a chance to create customized learning experiences for diverse learners, a stark contrast to his exclusionary past.

World Economic Forum Video: Visit Seoul in the Metaverse & Meat Grown From Stem Cells | WEF | Top Stories of the Week
This week's top stories of the week include:
0:15 Visit Seoul in the metaverse – Seoul, the vibrant capital of South Korea, has taken a pioneering step into the digital realm by launching the world's first urban metaverse app. This immersive platform allows users to create personalized avatars and embark on a virtual journey through Seoul's iconic landmarks, including N Seoul Tower, Gyeongbokgung Palace, and the mayor's office.
1:48 This meat is grown from stem cells – Shiok Meats cultivates meat and seafood directly from animal stem cells. This innovative technology offers a promising solution to the environmental and ethical concerns associated with conventional animal agriculture.
6:33 Sugar prices are surging. Here's why – Sugar enthusiasts face a grim reality as global sugar prices have skyrocketed by 55% in just two months. This surge stems from severe droughts in India and Thailand, the world's second and third-largest sugar exporters, respectively.
8:11 Climate disaster insurance for island states – A global insurance scheme could protect 100 vulnerable nations against the spiralling costs of storms, droughts and rising seas. Small island developing states face losses of 50-300% of GDP to hurricanes and other climate events. Until now, small island states were seen as untouchable in insurance terms but new research from Cambridge University and the insurer Howden shows coverage remains possible by modelling the likely risks they face and using premiums funded by ‘donor’ countries.

World Economic Forum Video: Technology that transforms: what an invention from 1450 can teach us about AI
If you’re a ‘digital native’ - someone who can’t remember a world before the internet - you might feel you have a good idea of the role technology will play in your life and perhaps in that of future generations.
But journalism professor Jeff Jarvis, author of a history of another transformative technology from more than five centuries ago - the printing press - says we can have no way yet of knowing where the internet, and AI, will take us.
The book is called The Gutenberg Parenthesis (https://www.bloomsbury.com/us/gutenberg-parenthesis-9781501394829/) . Jeff spoke to us at the World Economic Forum's AI Governance Summit.

Economic Video: OpenAI: Why Microsoft now has more control of its 'destiny'
#openai #yahoofinance #samaltman #microsoft #ai
OpenAI's rollercoaster November — the firing and swift rehiring of CEO Sam Altman — has brought the artificial intelligence firm closer to 49% stakeholder Microsoft (MSFT). The tech giant now holds a non-voting seat on OpenAI's board amid transition and expansion plans. RBC Capital Markets Software Equity Analyst Rishi Jaluria discusses the positive position this scenario places Microsoft in. Microsoft has "clearly shown they have some level of control over OpenAI, given how they were able to get Sam and everyone else back in the seat," Jaluria tells Yahoo Finance. "The question, I think, then becomes would it be better if they worked at Microsoft or at OpenAI? And i think it might be better happening at OpenAI from at least in a near-term perspective." For more expert insight and the latest market action, click here to watch this full episode of Yahoo Finance Live.
