Play Video: Zero-Emission Shipping & Transforming Finance for Women in Tanzania | WEF | Top Stories of the Week

This week's top stories of the week include: 0:15 3 firms lead zero-emission shipping – 99% of cargo ships are powered by oil-based fuels. The shipping sector generates almost 3% of global CO2 emissions as a result. Switching from oil to hydrogen-derived fuels is one of the best ways to cut these emissions. 2:34 How Beijing reduced air pollution – Since 2013, PM2.5 pollution has fallen by a massive 64% in the Chinese capital. Harmful nitrogen dioxide has fallen by 54% while sulphur dioxide has dropped by 89%. Beijing has increased the number of ‘good air days’ from just 13 in 2013 to more than 300 in 2023. 5:58 Transforming finance for women in Tanzania – Victoria Kisyombe knows about the financial challenges facing Tanzanian women. She launched Sero Lease and Finance Limited or Selfina. It leases productive assets such as milling machines, tractors and oil presses to women so they can generate income and build up their own equity 9:49 Japan plans ‘conveyor belt’ transport – The conveyor belt would occupy the middle of an existing highway and transport closet-sized containers in groups of 3, 24 hours a day. The conveyor belt would firstly reduce traffic congestion on major highways, secondly, cut transport emissions and thirdly, tackle Japan’s growing labour shortage. _____________________________________________ The World Economic Forum is the International Organization for Public-Private Cooperation. Jessica Jackson understands the damage wreaked by excessive incarceration and supervision. As a young mother with a two-month old on her hip, she watched her husband be sentenced to six years in prison, being pulled into a system impacting millions in the US alone - one that erodes families and communities and restricts opportunities for stable lives after release. This life-changing experience drove this housewife just only a GED to go to college, then law school, and then become a human rights attorney driving a movement for reform. She talks about her work running The Reform Alliance as Chief Operating Officer and Chief Advocacy Officer, a non-profit that has passed 18 bipartisan bills in 11 states that have created pathways for more than 850,000 people to exit the system. She also shares why tackling stigma and isolation is so key to future progress on this issue and the personal traits that she’s depended on the most to overcome hurdles and challenges. About this episode: The Reform Alliance: https://reformalliance.com/ Young Global Leaders: Future of Leadership Series: https://www.younggloballeaders.org/vision-and-mission/ Jessica is a Young Global Leader, a group of more than 1,400 innovators, entrepreneurs, technology pioneers, educators, activists, artists, journalists, and more, working to make change happen. This week's top stories of the week include: 0:15 Wooden satellite may cut space junk – LignoSat, a revolutionary satellite made from magnolia wood, has been launched into space. This tiny cube, weighing just 900 grams, was developed by scientists at Kyoto University and has been transported to the International Space Station (ISS) aboard a SpaceX rocket. From the ISS, it will orbit Earth for six months, testing the durability of wood in the harsh environment of space. 2:07 Generative AI trends at work – As generative AI becomes more prevalent in the workplace users are finding some major trends in the results. The World Economic Forum and PwC surveyed more than 20 workplaces to find their biggest lessons from introducing GenAI. 4:25 World’s first hydrogen ferry – It carries up to 75 passengers from the city’s North Beach to downtown. The MV Sea Change ferry launched in July and for the first 6 months, it’s completely free. The Sea Change is powered by zero-emission hydrogen fuel cells. They generate electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen. The only by-product is water vapour some of which is remineralized and used in the ferry’s water fountain. 6:29 Global South’s energy revolution – 1 in 5 emerging markets now have a larger share of renewables in their energy mix than the average developed country. Although developing economies are home to two-thirds of the world’s population they contain just 20% of the world’s fossil fuel production and reserves. Meanwhile, these economies hold 70% of the planet’s renewable energy potential. _____________________________________________ The World Economic Forum is the International Organization for Public-Private Cooperation.
