Europe: Turning the Recovery into Enduring Growth
Play Video: Europe: Turning the Recovery into Enduring Growth

Europe has done remarkably well against a turbulent backdrop. After years of crises and their fallouts, a soft landing for the continent’s economies is within reach. Securing it will require careful calibration of macroeconomic policies. As the cyclical recovery runs its course, growth will increasingly depend on structural factors. Yet there are several formidable headwinds to growth, including weakening productivity, an aging population, and underinvestment. Navigating these headwinds to higher medium-term growth will require structural reform efforts that should begin now. For the EU, this means urgently tapping the significant potential from further European integration. Combined with complementary measures at the domestic level, these reforms would go to show once again how Europe can overcome even the most severe obstacles when acting decisively and together.   The just released IMF Regional Economic Outlook for Europe discusses the economic reform agenda needed to cope with these multiple challenges. The discussion will focus on what policymakers in Brussels and at the national level can and should do to return Europe to greater competitiveness and faster growth.    The Regional Economic Outlook will be presented by Mr. Alfred Kammer, Director of the European Department at the IMF. He will then be joined by Ms. Maria Demertzis, Senior Fellow at Bruegel, and Ms. Christiane Nickel, Deputy Director General of DG Economics at the European Central Bank, for a panel discussion moderated by Ms. Maria Tadeo, Europe Correspondent. https://www.imf.org/en/Publications/REO/EU/Issues/2024/04/05/regional-economic-outlook-europe-april-2024

Play Video: Innovation for Women's Rugby & Rwanda Leverages Eco-Tourism | WEF | Top Stories of the Week

This week's top stories of the week include: 0:15 Innovative app for women's rugby – The Wales Women’s Rugby Team is using new tech to help players better manage their treatment and recovery. Players log symptoms such as headaches, nausea or fatigue on an app. These symptoms can be the result of a concussion or they might be associated with the later stages of the menstrual cycle. The app helps players and medical staff differentiate between the two, ensuring players receive the correct treatment. 2:03 Improving road safety in India – Globally, road accidents kill 1.3 million people a year. 92% of these deaths occur in low and middle-income countries such as India. In 2007, Piyush Tewari's 16-year-old cousin was struck by a car as he walked home from school. Seriously injured, he begged passers-by for help for 30 minutes but no one intervened. Tewari’s response to his cousin’s death was to launch SaveLIFE Foundation (SLF). 5:36 How stress impacts our bodies – Chronic stress can impact the heart, says Ruma Bhargava. Not only that, it can severely affect the gut microbiome leading to ulcers and IBS. It can also hamper our reproductive health and even affect the immune system impairing our ability to fight off disease. 9:46 Rwanda leverages eco-tourism – Many people come to Rwanda to see a certain famous resident, the mountain gorilla. Rwanda has used this interest to drive the conservation of this endangered species. Rwanda’s smart tourism policies don’t only benefit the animals. High ticket prices deter unsustainable mass tourism and ensure proceeds filter into communities. _____________________________________________ The World Economic Forum is the International Organization for Public-Private Cooperation. Play Video: Tourism is bouncing back - but can we make travel sustainable?

With the pandemic well behind us, international travel has bounced back. The World Economic Forum’s Travel and Tourism Development Index, a major survey of the state of the sector, gives a clear picture of how things look around the world. Maksim Soshkim, who leads much of the Forum’s work on the issue tells us the headlines, and Jacqueline Gifford, Editor-in-Chief of Travel + Leisure magazine, gives her take on the state of the travel scene. One of the key areas the TTDI looks at is sustainability - the impact of travel and tourism on the environment and local communities. And in this episode we hear from two people engaged in making tourism more sustainable: a hotel company taking action across its supply chain, and the head of tourism for Rwanda, where income from foreign visitors helps conserve a unique ecosystem and its endangered mountain gorillas. Speakers: Maksim Soshkin, Centre for Energy and Materials, World Economic Forum Jacqueline Gifford, Editor-in-Chief, Travel + Leisure Neil Jacobs, CEO, Six Senses Hotels Resorts Spas Michaella Rugwizangoga, Chief Tourism Officer, Rwanda Links: Travel and Tourism Development Index: wef.ch/ttdi24 (http://wef.ch/ttdi24) Global Future Council on the Future of Sustainable Tourism: https://www.weforum.org/communities/gfc-on-sustainable-tourism/ Related podcasts: Where are the innovations that can make mining more sustainable? This week's top stories of the week include: 0:15 VR can boost empathy – Virtual reality (VR) shows promise in increasing empathy and encouraging donations towards refugee crises. The study's authors suggest VR's immersive nature bridges ideological divides, influencing attitudes in a way traditional media might not. This has significant practical implications for NGOs and aid agencies seeking to raise awareness and secure donations for humanitarian crises. 1:53 This bus in Oman is powered by dates – It’s the first of its kind in the Middle East. The bus runs on biodiesel made from waste date kernels produced by scientists at Oman’s Sultan Qaboos University. The date kernels are washed, dried and crushed and the oil is extracted using alcohol before a chemical catalyst converts it into biodiesel. The bus made its inaugural journey in December 2022. 4:46 Building ships with the metaverse – The metaverse offers a groundbreaking solution: digital twins. Using AI, designers can create a photorealistic, virtual replica of the entire ship. This allows them to identify and fix any issues during the design phase, well before construction begins. 6:16 3 leading insights on AI – Experts predict 69 million jobs will be created over the next 5 years while 83 million jobs will be lost, a 2% net decrease in employment. Despite this, Freakley says AI will help boost economies facing labour shortages. _____________________________________________ The World Economic Forum is the International Organization for Public-Private Cooperation. The Netflix documentary 'The Tinder Swindler' is a mind-boggling case of so-called 'romance fraud' in which a charming, handsome - and apparently very rich - man meets women on a dating app - gets them to fall in love with him - and then cons them out of lots of money. Cecilie Fjellhøy is the Norwegian woman at the centre of the documentary whose life was torn apart by the actions of a conman. A survivor of romance fraud on a grand scale, she now advocates for the rights of, and support for, others who find themselves in similar grim circumstances. We also hear from Sean Doyle, who works at the World Economic Forum’s Centre for Cybersecurity, on just how widespread romance fraud really is, why it’s a multinational, multi-billion form of cyber crime, and what is being done to combat it. Voice actors Linnea Sage and Paul Skye Lehrman say they recorded their voices for a client who hired them for “academic research” and “tests for radio ads.” Years later, the couple were shocked to discover “AI versions” of their voices. In a video demonstration, they showed CNN’s Clare Duffy why they believe their voices were “stolen.” The voice actors’ lawsuit against Lovo, the company they claim is behind the AI voices, is just the latest in a recent string of legal actions brought against various tech companies by creatives, writers and artists who say their work was used without their permission to train AI systems that could ultimately compete with them. Such lawsuits have added to a growing wave of concerns over how the training of AI models, which requires huge swaths of data, could run afoul of copyright and intellectual property laws. A Houston-bound Boeing 737-800 plane operated by Southwest Airlines returned safely to Denver International Airport on Sunday after an engine cover fell off and struck the wing flap, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The agency said it will investigate. In recorded air traffic control audio, one of the pilots said that “several passengers and flight attendants heard something loud hit the wing.” In a statement to CNN, Southwest said passengers would take another plane to Houston and would be approximately three hours behind schedule. “We apologize for the inconvenience of their delay but place our highest priority on ultimate Safety for our Customers and Employees,” the statement said. Southwest said no injuries were reported. Boeing declined to comment and referred CNN to Southwest for information about plane and fleet operations. #boeing #CNN #News
