The sharply deteriorating global order is adding further complications to Europe’s already challenging economic situation. New tariffs come at a time when economies are grappling with structural transformations in demographics and energy, and amidst increasing security spending needs. Export markets are shrinking, uncertainty is undermining firms’ willingness to innovate, and public expenditure needs are rising. Without a turnaround in growth, Europe’s ability to deliver on its social welfare promises is in jeopardy. If European policymakers were to seize the moment, the region’s growth potential and resilience to shocks could rise substantially.

Play Video: E-fuel Might Change Flying & Cyber Careers Empower Women | WEF | Top Stories Week

This week's top stories of the week include: 0:15 This e-fuel might change flying — The ‘e’ in e-fuel stands for electricity. Unlike ordinary jet fuel, which is sourced from petroleum, the ingredients of e-fuel are water and pollution. Infinium’s fuel is an e-SAF or sustainable aviation fuel. SAFs are a great solution because they’re ‘drop-in’, which means they can go straight into existing planes without changing the fleet. 3:34 World needs more young farmers — Arnold Puech Pays d'Alissac is a family farmer from Normandy, France and the head of the World Farmers’ Organisation. As the world population rises, so does the need for farming. In the Future of Jobs Report 2025, ‘farmworker’ is the fastest growing role in the next 5 years with 35 million new vacancies set to be created by 2030. 3:34 This filter purifies water fast — The ROAMfilter Plus is cheap and portable. It can be set up in under a minute and filters up to 300 litres an hour. Unlike many filters, it uses no electricity so it can be deployed in places without power such as disaster zones or remote settlements. 5:16 Cyber careers empower women — For Confidence Staveley, a gap year after high school sparked a life-changing journey. It was the first time she encountered computers—and she was hooked. Although her parents had long envisioned a medical career for her, Staveley knew she belonged in tech. With only cardboard for her pitch, she convinced her parents to let her pursue cybersecurity. _____________________________________________ The World Economic Forum is the International Organization for Public-Private Cooperation. Slavery is not a problem cast to the annals of history. Modern slavery and forced labour are hidden in plain sight, found everywhere from nail salons to pristine factories, impacting 50 million people worldwide. Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s John Schultz explains more about this worsening problem and how it impacts economies and communities. He also explains how data technologies and artificial intelligence are being leveraged in new ways to draw insights from sources such as from shipping reports, photos, supply chain data and victim impact statements to tackle this issue in a way that’s never been possible before. He shares the collaborations in place that are broadening data pools and the simple question business leaders must ask to dig deeper into their own firms to make real change possible. Play Video: Can VR help calm surgery patients? & New York makes composting compulsory | WEF | Top Stories Week

This week's top stories of the week include: 0:15 Can VR help calm surgery patients? — Doctors at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota gave patients a set of virtual reality (VR) goggles and offered them a 10-minute ‘nature experience’. The clinic ran a trial on 100 patients, giving 50 a tablet and 50 a headset. Self-reported anxiety scores fell with both but more with the VR headset. 3:34 NY makes composting compulsory — Since 1 April, New Yorkers have had to separate food waste for recycling or face a fine of up to $300. It’s part of the city’s efforts to tackle climate change. The food waste is either composted and turned into fertilizer or emptied into a ‘biodigester’ where it emits biogas that’s used to generate renewable energy. 3:34 This robot finds people in rubble — It has an inflatable tube which can flex around corners and squeeze through narrow passages. An operator controls the tube with a joystick it has a camera and sensors at its tip, which help draw a 3D map of ‘void spaces’ and plot an entry route for emergency teams. 5:16 Space scanner maps remote forests — The world’s forests are a vital carbon sink but deforestation and degradation are eroding their storage capacity. The 1.25-tonne Biomass probe was built by Airbus and will orbit 666 km above the planet for several years, measuring and tracking changes in forests across Asia, Africa and South America. _____________________________________________ The World Economic Forum is the International Organization for Public-Private Cooperation.
