Investing in climate change resilience requires large scale financing. The potential for corruption to exacerbate the challenge, undermine the effectiveness of the response and increase costs means that better governance must be at the heart of the climate response. Acting fast will mean leveraging the existing anticorruption architecture and catalyzing coalitions in a highly coordinated way. In this joint event with the World Bank, panelists will discuss corruption vulnerabilities that are specific to the green transition and how to address them.
PANELISTS:
Shuang Liu, China Finance Director, World Resources Institute
Tsakani Maluleke, Auditor-General, South Africa
Mark Robinson, Executive Director, Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative
Moderator: Laury Haytayan, MENA Director, Natural Resource Governance Institute

World Economic Forum Video: Visit Seoul in the Metaverse & Meat Grown From Stem Cells | WEF | Top Stories of the Week
This week's top stories of the week include:
0:15 Visit Seoul in the metaverse – Seoul, the vibrant capital of South Korea, has taken a pioneering step into the digital realm by launching the world's first urban metaverse app. This immersive platform allows users to create personalized avatars and embark on a virtual journey through Seoul's iconic landmarks, including N Seoul Tower, Gyeongbokgung Palace, and the mayor's office.
1:48 This meat is grown from stem cells – Shiok Meats cultivates meat and seafood directly from animal stem cells. This innovative technology offers a promising solution to the environmental and ethical concerns associated with conventional animal agriculture.
6:33 Sugar prices are surging. Here's why – Sugar enthusiasts face a grim reality as global sugar prices have skyrocketed by 55% in just two months. This surge stems from severe droughts in India and Thailand, the world's second and third-largest sugar exporters, respectively.
8:11 Climate disaster insurance for island states – A global insurance scheme could protect 100 vulnerable nations against the spiralling costs of storms, droughts and rising seas. Small island developing states face losses of 50-300% of GDP to hurricanes and other climate events. Until now, small island states were seen as untouchable in insurance terms but new research from Cambridge University and the insurer Howden shows coverage remains possible by modelling the likely risks they face and using premiums funded by ‘donor’ countries.

World Economic Forum Video: Technology that transforms: what an invention from 1450 can teach us about AI
If you’re a ‘digital native’ - someone who can’t remember a world before the internet - you might feel you have a good idea of the role technology will play in your life and perhaps in that of future generations.
But journalism professor Jeff Jarvis, author of a history of another transformative technology from more than five centuries ago - the printing press - says we can have no way yet of knowing where the internet, and AI, will take us.
The book is called The Gutenberg Parenthesis (https://www.bloomsbury.com/us/gutenberg-parenthesis-9781501394829/) . Jeff spoke to us at the World Economic Forum's AI Governance Summit.

World Economic Forum Video: Indonesia's Giant Floating Solar Plant & 2024 Smart Toy Awards | WEF | Top Stories of the Week
This week's top stories of the week include:
0:15 The world has an antibiotic problem – Antimicrobial resistance (AMR), also known as antibiotic resistance, is a major health concern. It occurs when microbes, such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi, become resistant to the drugs used to treat them. This makes infections harder to treat and increases the risk of death.
4:48 Indonesia's giant floating solar plant – Indonesia has made a significant stride in renewable energy by unveiling a massive floating solar plant, the third largest of its kind globally. Situated on the Cirata Reservoir, 107 kilometers southeast of Jakarta, the plant's 13 expansive arrays cover 4% of the reservoir's surface, capable of generating up to 192 MW of power.
6:06 2024 Smart Toy Awards – Moflin, a palm-sized AI pet, is among the winners of the Smart Toy Awards. Just like a real pet, Moflin's AI has an "emotional model" that allows it to react to the way it's treated. This interactive play experience fosters a connection between the child and the toy, creating a sense of companionship and responsibility.
7:58 Clean air projects attract global investment – In 2021, international development funding for air quality projects surpassed that of fossil fuel projects for the first time, reaching $2.3 billion, an increase of $800 million from fossil fuel projects. This significant drop from $11.9 billion in 2019, the peak for fossil fuel funding, suggests a potential shift in the global financing landscape away from fossil fuels.
