Buying a mattress is an important, but often overlooked purchase. After all, it has been pointed out that you’ll spend a third of your life lying on one.
But it’s also a highly personal purchase. Some people like a firm sleeping surface while others prefer a softer mattress. At least one manufacturer allows you to adjust the firmness.
In its 2023 U.S. Mattress Satisfaction Study, J.D. Power surveyed customers who recently purchased a mattress, to measure their satisfaction. Interestingly, it found that people who purchased their mattresses online were more satisfied than people who purchased in a store, even though they didn’t try it out beforehand.
Those who purchased their mattress online paid an average of $939 and were more likely to repurchase the same mattress brand, while those who purchased at a brick-and-mortar location paid an average of $1,192 and were less likely to repurchase.
J.D. Power found that Tempur-Pedic ranks highest in customer satisfaction in the online purchase segment for a third consecutive year, with a score of 902. Sleep Number (896) ranks second and Purple (889) ranks third.
Sleep Number ranks highest in customer satisfaction in the retail purchase segment with a score of 881. Purple (879) ranks second and Tempur-Pedic (862) ranks third.
What ConsumerAffairs reviewers say
ConsumerAffairs reviewers have slightly different points of view, although all three brands get high marks. But when it comes to Tepur-pedic, slightly more reviewers gave the mattress a 1-Star review than rated it 5 Stars.
Meanwhile, 60% of Consumer Affairs reviewers rated Select Comfort Sleep Number at 5-Stars and only 23% gave it a 1-Star review. Sixty-six percent of ConsumerAffairs reviewers awarded Purple with either a 5-Star or 4-Star review, largely reflecting the J.D. Power findings.
Melissa, of Firestone, Colo., gave Select Comfort Sleep Number a 5-Star thumbs up, saying she had never slept better.
“I have a condition that affects my entire body, especially my head and neck, Melissa told us. “I have found that the only bed I can sleep on is a Sleep Number because it completely contours to my body no matter what position I sleep in. I can adjust the bed to fit my needs.”
The ConsumerAffairs research team checked out all the major mattress manufacturers here, along with verified customer reviews.
The J.D. Power study was based on seven factors – in order of importance – comfort; price; support; durability; variety of features; warranty; and customer service.
