If you’re pregnant and have been exposed to TCE during your pregnancy, you should talk to your doctor. A pregnant woman’s exposure to TCE during the second to eighth week of pregnancy can increase the risk of having a baby born with a congenital heart defect, or CHD. Some studies show that the risk may double, so instead of having one baby in 100 born with a CHD, 2 babies in 100 are born with a CHD. Remember, most babies exposed to TCE during pregnancy will be born with a normal heart, and having a baby with a CHD does not mean there was a TCE exposure. Most likely, only the routinely ordered pre-natal testing would be recommended. The purpose of those tests is to look for birth defects or other problems with the baby. Regardless of what month of pregnancy you are in, you should take steps to reduce exposure to TCE.

CDC Video: Congenital Heart Defects - What if I was exposed to TCE and plan on getting pregnant?
Exposure to TCE before or after your pregnancy will not affect the developing fetus.
The most vulnerable period is the first two to eight weeks of your pregnancy. During this time, the baby’s major organs, including the heart, are developing.

CDC Video: Congenital Heart Defects - How are CHDs diagnosed?
While some, especially severe, CHDs might be detected during pregnancy, some aren’t detected until after birth or later in life. During pregnancy, an ultrasound at 11 to 13 weeks will look for extra fluid on the baby’s neck, which may suggest a CHD. If a CHD is suspected, your doctor might order a special ultrasound for the heart, called a fetal echocardiogram. At birth, a CHD might be suspected if the baby has gray or blue skin, fast breathing, or a heart murmur.

CDC Video: Congenital Heart Defects - What is a CHD?
Birth defects of the heart, known as a congenital heart defects, or CHDs, are birth defects that can affect the structure of a baby’s heart and the way it works. They can affect how blood flows through the heart and out to the rest of the body. CHDs can vary from mild, such as a small hole in the heart, to severe, such as missing or poorly formed parts of the heart. CHDs are the most common birth defect in babies born in the United States. About one in 100 babies is born with a CHD. The most common type of CHD is a ventricular septal defect, or VSD, which is a hole in the wall between the lower chambers of the heart.

CDC Video: Birth Defects - What Causes Birth Defects?
We know the cause for some birth defects, but for most, we don’t. That’s because we think most birth defects are caused by a complex mix of factors. There are some factors that can increase the chance of having a baby with a birth defect. These are called risk factors and include:
• Smoking, drinking alcohol, or taking certain “street” drugs during pregnancy.
• Having certain medical conditions, such as obesity or uncontrolled diabetes.
• Taking certain medications, such as some acne drugs.
• Having someone in your family with a birth defect.
• Being an older mother, typically over 34.
• And exposure to some chemicals and viruses during pregnancy.
Having one or more of these factors doesn’t necessarily mean your baby will have a birth defect. It is important to talk to your doctor about what you can do to improve your chances to have a healthy baby.
