CDC Video: Hard hats and Helmets: Keeping Workers Safe
Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) are injuries that can occur to somebody’s head due to a bump, jolt, strike or a fall. TBI’s affect functioning of the brain. Sometimes the impact of the injury to the brain can be minor but in some cases it can be very serious. NIOSH conducted a study from 2003-2010, and found 25% of fatalities during that time period were due to traumatic brain injuries and a good portion of those occurred during falls from elevation. Wearing a more protective hard hats can be important during a struck-by or fall incident because it can reduce the severity of the injury the worker sustains. Scott Earnest, Associate Director of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Construction Office and Co-Chair of the NORA Construction Sector Council; and Stacey Simmons, Chair of the International Safety Equipment Association (ISEA) Head Protection Product Group discuss the importance of wearing a hardhat or a helmet to prevent traumatic brain injuries among construction workers and how best to choose the appropriate one.
