Play Video: Challenges for Occupational Safety and Health on the 2040 Horizon

May 2024 Foresight Friday @ NIOSH webinar: Where, when, why, and how we work is currently influenced by many trends, including technological innovations, market instabilities, organizational agilities, fragmented careers, climate change, rapid transformations of production systems, the desire for work-life balance, and the pursuit of meaningful work. Such changes require new ways of managing work, which can bring new impacts to occupational safety and health. A multidisciplinary team of colleagues from the National Research and Safety Institute for the Prevention of Occupational Accidents and Diseases (INRS) in France recently used methods such as design fiction and in-depth expert analysis to explore how different work management approaches might unfold over time and bring new challenges and opportunities to the future of occupational risk prevention. Dr Jasmine Westendorf, Associate Professor at La Trobe University in Australia, shares some of her findings about sexual exploitation and abuse perpetrated by peacekeepers and aid workers in humanitarian operations. In this episode, Dr Westendorf discusses the economic interests that lead to exploitation - and how this can have a lasting impact on a community even when the peace operation moves out. We hear about the false premise of consent in transactional sex, and the long-term effects it has on individuals, communities and trust in the very organisations there to support them. Dr Westendorf talks about the importance of community involvement in responding to exploitation and abuse. She also emphasises the need for further research on prevention and the particular vulnerabilities of different population groups. Play Video: Super-Chilled Brain Cell Molecules Reveal How Epilepsy Drug Works

By super cooling a molecule on the surface of brain cells, scientists at Johns Hopkins Medicine say they have determined how a widely-used epilepsy drug works to dampen the excitability of brain cells and help to control, although not cure, seizures. To study the mechanism, the researchers turned to cryo-electron microscopy, or cryoEM, which has evolved in the last two decades as a powerful tool to study structures a million times smaller than the width of a human hair. The research identifies critical connections between activity of the epilepsy drug perampanel and the resulting movements of a brain cell surface molecule known as the AMPA receptor. The AMPA receptor plays a critical role for one of the most abundant neurotransmitters in the brain — glutamate — which activates brain cells, or neurons, by connecting with the receptor. The scientists used artificial intelligence and machine learning tools to average and combine the cryoEM images into a 3D reconstruction of the receptor. The video shows the structure of the AMPA receptor, how glutamate (green) and the epilepsy drug/inhibitor (pink) connect with the receptor and its ion channels.
