Medicine Video: Amy’s Story | Taking Back Control with a Preventative Double Mastectomy
Amy explains how a preventative double mastectomy was the right choice for her after learning that she was at high risk for breast cancer after precancerous cells (atypical ductal hyperplasia) were discovered even though her genetic markers were negative. By being at high risk, Amy would have needed at least one mammogram, one lumpectomy and two other appointments every year for the rest of her life. Amy chose a different option and took back control of her life. She underwent a double mastectomy followed by breast reconstruction. With a successful surgery and reconstruction behind her, Amy’s message is simple: If you’re lucky enough to know that you’re at high risk of breast cancer, consider all of your options – including a preventative double mastectomy, which can help you get control back of your life. https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/plastic-reconstructive-surgery/services-appts/reconstructive-surgery-after-breast-cancer #breastreconstruction #johnshopkins #doublemastectomy
