"A British man who posted a video saying he dropped an engagement ring in a lake while proposing to his girlfriend has gone viral on TikTok.
The couple, whose names are listed on their TikTok profiles as Gerii Ashforth and Ross Bamber, have both posted about the event, saying it was going to be a "perfect proposal" until Bamber dropped the ring in the lake.
In a video with 3.7 million views, posted by Ashforth on June 18, Bamber could be seen leading her onto a wooden deck while she held her hands over her eyes. The couple were backlit by electric tealight candles and positioned next to a lake.
As Bamber begins to get down one knee to propose to Ashforth, who was still covering her eyes, a series of thuds could be heard in the clip, with Ashforth immediately saying, "That wasn't what I thought it was?" Ashforth captioned the TikTok using the hashtags #InTheLake, #RingDrop, and #ProposalGoneWrong."

"Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell won’t support a bipartisan domestic manufacturing bill if Democrats try to lower prescription drug prices and tax the rich, the Kentucky Republican announced Thursday.
Bipartisan negotiators from the House and Senate have been hammering out a compromise of a bill boosting the semiconductor chip industry after each chamber passed its own version. The Senate’s bill was called the United States Innovation and Competitiveness Act, or USICA.
“Let me be perfectly clear: there will be no bipartisan USICA as long as Democrats are pursuing a partisan reconciliation bill,” McConnell tweeted on Thursday.
McConnell’s threat comes just as Democrats have made progress on a new budget reconciliation bill to replace the stalled Big Back Better Act. The centerpiece of the legislation would be a provision giving Medicare more power to negotiate with pharmaceutical manufacturers for lower prescription drug prices.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) have nearly finalized a prescription drug agreement, according to a source familiar with the negotiations. NBC News first reported the details of the plan on Thursday."

"Public schools in Texas would describe slavery to second graders as “involuntary relocation” under new social studies standards proposed to the state’s education board.
A group of nine educators submitted the idea to the State Board of Education as part of Texas’ efforts to develop new social studies curriculum, according to the Texas Tribune. The once-a-decade process updates what children learn in the state’s nearly 8,900 public schools.
The board is considering curriculum changes one year after Texas passed a law to eliminate topics from schools that make students “feel discomfort.”
Board member Aicha Davis, a Democrat who represents Dallas and Fort Worth, raised concerns during a June 15 meeting that the term wasn’t a fair representation of the slave trade. The board sent the draft back for revision, urging the educator group to “carefully examine the language used to describe events.”
“I can’t say what their intention was, but that’s not going to be acceptable,” Davis told The Texas Tribune on Thursday."

Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe on June 24, frontline reproductive justice groups have been fighting back—on the ground, in court, and online. Ad hoc groups have sprung up on places like Reddit and Facebook, where people are sharing resources and facilitating housing and travel for those in need. But all of this is fragile."
