I love my grandkids so much, which is why we ended up eventually moving here to Idaho. I got a phone call one night, and it was a person describing a business opportunity. And at first I just said, no, I don't think I'm interested, and tried to get him off the phone.
But he was very persistent. They asked me a bunch of personal questions and found out that I was not working. My husband was on disability. Yes, we could use some kind of financial help to give us some more security. And he said, well, we have this opportunity of a business coaching program that I think could really help you.
It's an online business. You can do it from home. One of the things that sparked me was at the time, I was spending a lot of time on the computer looking at toys for my grandkids, thinking about, oh, they would really like this toy to play with. And so maybe I could sell toys, because that's something I could get enthusiastic about. Then they said, well, you could potentially make $3,000 to $5,000 a month if you work work hard at this.
With a business opportunity scam, what we see is typically a promise-- you'll make money. You'll make a lot of money.
They mentioned that there was an investment involved, and I said, well, I need to talk this over with my husband.
What the scammer's trying to do is make you believe you will be successful-- but in order to get there, you need this additional service.
So a period of three nights they talked to us. And on the third night, we just decided that well, maybe this is something I could do. So we bought a $9,000 business coaching program, which gave us 30 business coaching sessions on the phone.
What we've seen-- from the FTC's law enforcement experience-- is there are no trained coaches. There are no programs. There's no one who's been successful.
Then the next phase was I needed a business license, a website. I needed to know how to code, and they could do it for me. They could even preload the products on my website. Whenever I said I wasn't getting any sales from all this work, they just gave me excuses, like, it takes time. It was $25,000 that I lost-- total. Lost.
It's really important that before you spend a dime, you do research, and do the research online. Do some kind of a search, maybe with the word "complaint," with the word "scam," with the word "review." Contact the Better Business Bureau. Contact your state attorney general's office. And talk to friends, talk to family.
Talk to others about it, because it will help somebody else.

My name is Don Holmes. I live in Sun City West, Arizona.
In this community, we're all seniors. After you move in here, even if you don't know anybody, you get to know other people you enjoy doing things with. I use a computer predominantly for email and to get the news.
One day, a thing pops up and kind of blocks the screen, and says you've got all kinds of viruses in your computer. The design of the pop-up had a Microsoft logo on the top. And they had a number. And I couldn't get rid of this thing on the screen.
I turned the computer off. I turned it back on-- still there. So I called the number.
They identified themselves as Microsoft. I had no feeling that there was anything wrong.
Tech support scams are real. And they're causing enormous consumer injury-- hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars. And that's just based on the FTC's on law enforcement work.
Just like Mr. Holmes, a lot of people are getting pop-ups on their screens. And often, they claim to be associated with a company such as Microsoft or Apple, giving them lots of credibility.
They told me they would clear what they considered to be malware in there. In order to clear it up, they needed to get into my computer and have my control of the computer turned over to them.
So I gave them my password. They went in. The thing came off of the screen. When I went back to my computer the next day, I couldn't access my files.
You'd never let a stranger into your house. Don't let one into your computer. If you get a pop-up, don't click on a link. If you get a phone call from someone who says your computer security is at risk, don't listen to them. Stop. Take the time to talk to a friend. Talk to a family member.
When this happened to me, I was a little bit embarrassed. I mean, I consider myself fairly alert. But I was targeted. And I was scammed.
I didn't really want to talk about this. But I realized that if I didn't talk about it, that if I didn't file the complaint with the attorney general, that if I didn't file a complaint with the FTC, that I would have shrunk into myself. And by talking about it, by talking to all my friends--
They're not amateurs, Don.
--I began to realize that they also started talking. And they started indicating that they had experienced similar things.
That kind of community, that kind of exposure-- it's not an embarrassment. It's just something that happens when you're a senior. You have to talk about it to other seniors.
What I would suggest is contact the FTC. They have a website. You can fill out a complaint online.
We can be empowered with your family, your friends, and other people within your community to try to put a stop-- or at least protect ourselves from these kinds of scams.

When you sign up to be a Report Fraud Community Advocate, your organization will get:
- A custom Community Advocate link that you can use to submit reports on behalf of your clients
- Next steps tailored to your client's report to try to recover money lost
- Aggregated data and statistics about the reports submitted through your organization's link
- Periodic emails about reporting trends in your geographic area
- Access to training videos, learn about upcoming webinars, and consumer education resources

At the Federal Trade Commission, we’re proud of the work we’ve done with legal services organizations. I want to tell you about the latest way we’re working together to help protect your clients.
The Community Advocate Center, we hope, is a tool that will make it easier for you and your colleagues to help clients report fraud to the FTC.
If you become a Report Fraud Community Advocate, you’ll get a custom link that lets you submit reports to the FTC on behalf of your clients.
This does two things: first, it flags the reports so our investigators can look closely at them as they build cases.
Second, it aggregates the reports into data that we can feed back to you about the reports your organization submitted. Which can be helpful for grant writing.
As you move through the reporting process, you’ll get some next steps tailored to your client’s experience, with a focus on getting their money back, whenever possible.
And, of course, by helping your clients report, you’re helping stop fraud in your community.
