Superconductors are used in MRIs and particle accelerators, but to maintain zero electrical resistance, they must stay at frigid temperatures. For decades, researchers have searched for a solution to this problem: superconductors that work at room-temperature. Many believe this discovery would open the door to a host of everyday applications. So far, the only reported room-temperature superconductor requires high pressure to function—but some researchers believe they can create ambient pressure superconductors by creating materials with the right chemical combination. Two common vampire bats feed on a cow near La Chorrera, Panama. It can take 10 to 40 minutes for a bat to bite a small, diamond-shaped wound into an animal’s flesh, and fights can sometimes break out over access to wounds. But researchers found that bats who are friendly back at the roost likely feed together in the field, potentially saving time and energy. Researchers successfully trained 11 calves, such as this one, to urinate in a bathroom stall. Once the cow relieved itself, a window in the stall opened, dispensing a molasses mixture as a treat. Toilet training cows on a large scale and collecting their urine to make fertilizer could cut down on agricultural pollution, the team says.

In 2020, the sea ice in the Arctic shrank to its second lowest extent since satellite monitoring began in 1979. This animation uses those observations to show the change in sea ice coverage from March 5, when the ice was at its maximum, through September 15, when the ice reached its lowest point. The yellow line represents the average minimum extent from 1981 to 2010. Current forecasting tools can accurately predict these changes weeks in advance. A new AI-based tool can predict these changes with nearly 95 percent accuracy several months in advance.

On Frégate Island in the Seychelles, an archipelago off the coast of East Africa, researchers captured the first documented instance of a tortoise — usually a strict herbivore — hunting, killing and eating prey. The giant tortoise stalked a young noddy tern, which fell from its nest, for several minutes before biting and killing the bird.

Science News Video: A sneaky bird swipes hair from a raccoon | Science News
Scientists counting birds in an Illinois state park in May 2020 spotted a tufted titmouse plucking fur off a dozing, unbothered raccoon. The team dubbed the behavior “kleptotrichy” after a search of the scientific literature and amateur videos on YouTube turned up more than 100 instances of hair thievery by birds.
