Science News Video: Meet the mycologists aiming to illuminate the hidden world of fungi
A new nonprofit, the Society for the Protection of Underground Networks, is on a mission to illuminate the hidden world of fungi beneath our feet. Gabriel Popkin, a contributing correspondent, joined these researchers on their inaugural sampling expedition in Patagonia. The researchers hope to map the global distribution of mycorrhizal fungi with a network of researchers.

Science News Video: This little bot can hitchhike, swim and swoop with ease
Robots on long survey missions need to conserve power whenever possible. What if they could just hitch a ride on whatever they’re studying? That’s the idea behind a new robot, inspired by remoras, fish that hitchhike onto other animals using an adhesive disc on top of their head.
Remoras use lamellae, slat-like bones encased in soft tissue, and spinules, rows of hard teeth-like tissue to create tight suction. In 2017, scientists created a disc inspired by these features. But the disc couldn’t suction with individual lamella, making it vulnerable to falling off.
In the new study, the researchers created a disc with redundant suctions, allowing it to attach to surfaces even if part of its disc was not fully attached.
Adding propellers on board enabled the robot to swim underwater and latch onto moving objects. The bot could also launch itself out of the water in less than half a second, scientists report this week in Science Robotics.
The researchers anticipate this robot being used in a variety of situations: from diving in the water to tag animals, to long term environmental surveys. Watch the video to see the robot tackle a variety of situations with ease.

Science News Video: Your dog’s breed doesn’t determine its personality, study suggests
A new study shows that almost none of the behaviors we associate with dog breeds—from lovable Labradors to pugnacious pit bulls—are hard-wired. Aside from a few ancient traits, environment seems to play a much larger role than pedigree.

If we could just spread our wings and hop into the clouds, flying would probably be a heck of a lot of fun. Instead, we have to wait for our boarding group to climb into a cramped metal tube and hope for no turbulence. But does flying on airplanes have to be this way?

Science News Video: See how a sea sponge ‘sneezes’ to clear gunk from its pores | Science News
The Caribbean tube sponge (Aplysina archeri) uses contractions — called "sneezes" — to help eject mucus from its pores, or ostia. As the time-lapse video zooms in closer, it’s possible to see tiny specks of debris floating out of these pores and traveling along a “mucus highway” where they collect into stringy clumps of goo floating above the surface of the sponge. In real time, this sponge takes between 20 and 50 minutes to complete a sneeze.

Science News Video: This camera can pick out individual singers in a frog chorus | Science News
In video from what’s called an “acoustic camera,” each blip of a rainbow blob in this New Hampshire pool pinpoints the location of a male wood frog who just gave his come-hither mating call. The colors correspond to the decibel scale at right. The male frogs gather in early spring to call (sounding to human ears like something between a human burp and a turkey gobble). To female wood frogs, though, it’s apparently a signal that males are available and eager for company.

Electrical cable bacteria (white filaments) emerge from the seafloor sediment (at bottom) stretching their bodies to reach a zone of oxygen in the water. The stringy organisms use the oxygen to offload electrons they’ve harvested from harmful sulfides found in the sediment. As sulfide concentrations go down, the water becomes more habitable to microbes that can clean up oil spills.
