The universe was a cold, dark place 10 million years after the Big Bang. Hydrogen gas began to clump together 100 million years later, forming dense regions (white) that gave birth to the first stars and galaxies, as seen in this animation from a new simulation of the early universe. Light radiating from the stars (blue) heated the gas around the galaxies as matter collected in a weblike arrangement. The pink bursts are high-temperature regions that appeared as some stars exploded. The galaxies and stars we see today lie along the filaments that resulted from the complicated interplay between matter and starlight as the universe evolved.

Using observations gathered by camera-equipped tiger sharks (like the one shown here) and a crew of divers, researchers have discovered the world’s largest expanse of seagrasses. The newly mapped seagrass bed in the Bahamas Banks, a cluster of underwater plateaus surrounding the Bahama archipelago, covers an area half the size of Florida. Seagrass meadows help fight climate change by capturing and burying carbon for millennia, and this one could store a quarter of all carbon trapped by seagrasses worldwide.

Sharks and their relatives can detect electric fields using organs in the skin called ampullae of Lorenzini. So researchers tested whether attaching a SharkGuard device, which emits a pulse of electricity every two seconds, to a fishing line just above the hook could deter a shark. The results, showing a shark taking the bait of a normal hook but other sharks veering away from hooks with the device, could hold promise for preventing millions of sharks from becoming bycatch.

To figure out whether rats innately perceive rhythm, researchers used motion capture cameras to track how rats move to a musical beat. The colored dots indicate markers that helped the cameras track the rodent’s subtle head bobbing as it hears a Mozart piano sonata and Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way.” The study could help reveal the evolutionary foundations of humans’ sense of rhythm.
