Planet Earth Like clockwork, we wake up every morning, rummage through our supplies to find something to eat and brew that perfect cup of coffee (or tea) that keeps us going the whole day. At first, the same routine day after day isn't that bothersome, but once clouds of monotony begin to cast their shadow,… Source:weather.com Original Image Link

In order to detect the background hum of gravitational waves in the cosmos, scientists monitor the light coming from dead stars called pulsars. These pulsar produce flashes of light with incredible regularity, allowing researchers to calculate when they would expect to detect these flashes. The difference between the the expected actual arrival time of these flashes is caused by small ripples in space-time caused by gravitational waves. Researchers are looking at these differences across dozens of pulsars, called pulsar timing arrays, for confirmation of the gravitational wave background.

Science News Video: JWST's golden eye sees the universe anew
Not many telescopes get introduced by the president, but JWST, the gold-plated wunderkind of astronomy built by NASA with the help of the European and Canadian space agencies, deserves that honor. It is the most complex science mission ever put into space and at $10 billion the most expensive. And it did not come easy.

Someone call James Cameron — a team of scientists just invented a new kind of liquid metal robot that can shapeshift between solid and liquid form using the power of magnetism. Also, the Earth's spinning inner core may have slowed down so much it looks like it's spinning backwards from a certain point of view. But that's okay, it's happened before.

Science News Video: See where echidnas’ bodies are hot — and where they’re not | Science News
When tiny glass frogs fall asleep, they store almost 90 percent of their red blood cells in their liver, increasing the animals’ transparency (seen in the first clip), which may help hide them from predators. When the animals wake up, their blood starts to course again (second clip).

Science News Video: Genital spines keep a male wasp from becoming a frog’s snack | Science News
Two thin spines shown flexing on a male mason wasp’s rear don’t deliver sperm. But these spines are among the few known genital structures that work as self-defense, ecologists Shinji Sugiura and Misaki Tsujii of Kobe University report. Male Anterhynchium gibbifrons mason wasps don’t have stingers, but when a tree frog gulps the male, lunch doesn’t go well. The wasp stabs its spines into the frog’s face and mouth — prompting the frog to vigorously spit out the wasp.

Science News Video: Listen to a Martian dust devil hit NASA’s Perseverance rover | Science News
On September 27, 2021, Perseverance’s navigation camera spotted a dust devil (purplish cloud in the images at top, which were processed to reveal the dust) whirling toward it from 50 to 60 meters away. As the whirlwind swept across the rover, Perseverance’s microphone recorded the sound it made, capturing the first-ever audio of a Martian dust devil (middle), and the rover’s instruments detected a slight drop in atmospheric pressure (bottom). These data may someday help researchers better understand dust dynamics on Mars.
