After an oil spill, humans rush to the scene to minimize impacts on the environment. But if the oil sticks around long enough, nature’s responders start to roll in. Bacteria such as Alcanivorax borkumensis thrive in these settings, using the components of petroleum as a source of energy and carbon. Now, a group of biophysicists has observed exactly how this bacterium breaks oil down. When Alcanivorax is exposed to oil for a longer period of time, it forms a biofilm around oil that can push and pull the oil’s surface into branching tubes. Watch the video to learn how this transformation facilitates a faster feast for these oil-loving bacteria.

Traditional cooling devices like air conditioners rely on refrigerants that can harmful to humans and the environment. Materials scientist Ichiro Takeuchi and his research group have developed a cooling device free of typical toxic refrigerants, instead relying on a physical property of certain metal alloys. These alloys produce heat when strained through stretching or compression, and absorb heat when that strain is released. This heat absorption produces a cooling effect that could be used for cleaner refrigeration in the future.

When you’re trying on a new pair of shoes, you might use your thumb to see how much room you have in front of your big toe. Even though it isn’t the most precise tool, your body is a quick and accessible way to measure the world around you. In June, researchers reported that 186 cultures globally use forms of body-based measurements, and that they continued to be used after standard units were introduced. Watch the video to learn about the advantages of body-based units.

An early interest in reptile feeding behavior led evolutionary biologist Kurt Schwenk to study the tongues of lizards. Like Charles Darwin’s finches, the various forms and functions of lizard tongues help piece together the story how the diversity of reptiles and amphibians evolved. In this video he explains how his high-speed cameras not only capture every flick, shot, and blob, but have also proved useful in studying a variety of other fast-moving organisms and behaviors.

To reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, some researchers are taking carbon capture technology to the source(s) — for example, slurping up CO2 before it ever leaves the power plant that made it. But that's not all! Some researchers are investigating how well carbon itself can get the job done.

Science News Video: How NASA’s OSIRIS-REx will return bits of an asteroid to Earth | Science News
After a three-year trip aboard the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft, a capsule containing dust and rocks from the asteroid Bennu will make a fiery plunge into the Earth’s atmosphere on September 24, as seen in this simulation. Once the capsule is released, OSIRIS-REx will fire its jets to deflect itself onward to asteroid Apophis under the new name OSIRIS-APEX. Meanwhile, the capsule will fly toward Earth like a fireball. Although jostled during the rough descent, the sample will be protected from the intense temperatures of reentry by the capsule's heat shield. As the capsule nears the ground, it will pop a parachute and gently drift the rest of the way down in Utah where, if all goes well, scientists can collect their long-awaited delivery.

More than 200 birds from 23 species were given different cognitive tests to gauge their intelligence. One of the problem-solving tasks asked birds to pull a cork lid off a glass flask to access a tasty treat (bottom left). Comparing these tests with birds’ ability to learn songs and calls showed that the better vocal learners are also better at problem-solving.

To explore how a specific brain region in rats might relate to their well-documented play behavior, researchers tickled rats on their bellies and backs and played chase-the-hand. Rats also played together, chasing and play-fighting. Ultrasonic giggles, processed to make them audible to humans, coordinate social play and show that the rats are having fun.
