The Byssus End of the Mussel. In order to withstand the crashing waves, mussels have strong filaments called byssal threads to help them stick to rocky surfaces with surprising strength. When needed, the bivalves can also release these threads with seemingly little effort. Deeper investigation and imaging revealed that friction between cilia in the living tissue and the nonliving byssal threads help the mussel hold tight. Injections with serotonin, which is known to decrease cilia activity in mussels, made the byssus easier to remove, indicating that some kind of neurotransmitter signal may be involved in the quick release of the byssus. This surprising phenomenon has researchers wondering if some version of this tight hold and easy release could become part of future biomedical implants. Read the paper: https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adf3345 After an oil spill, humans rush to the scene to minimize impacts on the environment. But if the oil sticks around long enough, nature’s responders start to roll in. Bacteria such as Alcanivorax borkumensis thrive in these settings, using the components of petroleum as a source of energy and carbon. Now, a group of biophysicists has observed exactly how this bacterium breaks oil down. When Alcanivorax is exposed to oil for a longer period of time, it forms a biofilm around oil that can push and pull the oil’s surface into branching tubes. Watch the video to learn how this transformation facilitates a faster feast for these oil-loving bacteria.

Read the paper here: https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adg7043 Traditional cooling devices like air conditioners rely on refrigerants that can harmful to humans and the environment. Materials scientist Ichiro Takeuchi and his research group have developed a cooling device free of typical toxic refrigerants, instead relying on a physical property of certain metal alloys. These alloys produce heat when strained through stretching or compression, and absorb heat when that strain is released. This heat absorption produces a cooling effect that could be used for cleaner refrigeration in the future.

Even though it isn’t the most precise tool, your body is a quick and accessible way to measure the world around you. In June, researchers reported that 186 cultures globally use forms of body-based measurements, and that they continued to be used after standard units were introduced. Watch the video to learn about the advantages of body-based units.

One day, the world may partially run on clean hydrogen fuel. But a big barrier to that future is just how darn difficult it is to store hydrogen for later use. So one team of scientists have proposed making hydrogen "batteries" out of something we want to stop using as fuel: coal. Suddenly looking dead can free a female frog from a male’s intense embrace in the just-grab-her mass mating frenzies among European common frogs (Rana temporaria). In this lab tub setup, a male grabs one of the two females and locks himself against her in mating position. She eventually just goes limp as if dead, and he lets go and pursues the other female in the tub. The first female sprawls with legs stretched out until the new couple bumps into them. Then the “dead” female revives and moves away. Regardless of whether the first female had any control over going immobile when she did, the fake death released her from the male. Too much sunlight can lead to coral bleaching, much like excessive heat can. By creating artificial marine fog using arrays of misters mounted to ships, like what’s seen in this video, researchers hope to shield reefs such as Australia’s Great Barrier Reef from harmful rays. In an experimental setup to study how hummingbirds navigate narrow gaps, wild-caught Anna’s hummingbirds (Calypte anna) had to fit through holes smaller than their wingspan to reach a feeder filled with nectar. How they are able to do that was a mystery: While amazingly acrobatic in the air, the tiny birds have stiffer, less bendable wings than other kinds of birds. Although too fast to see at normal speed, this bird tucks its wings close to its body to dive-bomb through the hole. A male Anna’s hummingbird crosses an 8-centimeter-wide opening, smaller than its 12-centimeter wingspan. Viewed from the side and below, the bird first flies though the hole at a sideways angle in the first clip, fluttering its wings to avoid hitting the barrier. In the second video clip, the hummingbird tucks its wings back against its body as it passes through the hole like a bullet. The clips show each style of flight first at actual speed and then one-twentieth normal speed. Read more: https://www.sciencenews.org/article/hummingbirds-fly-spaces-narrow-wings Video: Marc Badger
