Lupus, multiple sclerosis, and other autoimmune diseases all result from a treacherous immune system attacking a person’s own healthy tissue. Last year, a new approach, chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy, yielded striking improvements in seriously ill patients, opening what may be a new chapter in autoimmune disease treatment.

In 2002, a NASA intern stole a safe full of moon rocks from the Johnson Space Center. Around the same time, a special agent there was devoting his life to retrieving moon rocks that had gone missing. This is the story of two men who, for their own reasons, became obsessed with a few grey pebbles—and what those pebbles teach us about the universe.

Science News Video: A newly found gas cloud lurks near the solar system | Science News
A newly discovered molecular gas cloud is the closest ever found to Earth and the largest single structure in the sky. Dubbed Eos, after the goddess of dawn, the cloud’s chemical composition kept it hidden in plain sight. Its discovery offers a rare opportunity for scientists to study molecular cloud formation and dissipation up close.

A carnivorous caterpillar discovered on the Hawaiian island of Oahu adorns its silken protective case with the body parts of insect prey. This macabre coat helps them hide from spiders, whose webs make up the caterpillars’ hunting grounds. Bone collector caterpillars are also cannibals, and one is shown eating its fellow species at twice the normal speed.

The evening rush hour commute for greater mouse-tailed bats has surprisingly few midair collisions (marked in video). Starting from inside a cave where thousands of Rhinopoma microphyllum bats huddle during the day, the colony streams out a narrow exit to hunt in Israel’s Hula Valley. At the cave exit, bats fly so close that echolocation signals for detecting obstacles, each other and prey partially mask neighbors’ pings like the cacophony of a human cocktail party. As the colony streams into open air, however, bat-to-bat distance expands, and bats can hear themselves ping.

The Dallas-based company made tweaks to gray wolf DNA based on information gleaned from reconstructed ancient dire wolf DNA to create embryos. Twins Romulus and Remus were born in October. See how they have grown from howling and milk guzzling 15-day-old pups to playful 5-month-olds.
