Travel Guy: JetBlue May Merge with Spirit. What This Means For Your Vacation
As far as I am concerned the JetBlue Airways and Spirit Airways merger is much ado about nothing. But seeing as though you are an astute vacation thrill-seeker, I do have a few points to make and what to look for in the coming 24 months as this merger progresses (if approved).
So, without further adieu, here are the Nine Ways the Jet Blue/Spirit Merger Should Matter to You!
Logic
This merger is a really good move for JetBlue. By making this purchase, JetBlue will become the 5th largest airline in the United States (more on that in a second). It also kicks out one of their competitors - or rather, perceived competitors - by consumers. However, I am always a little skeptical when a player is removed completely from the board. Nevertheless, this move is a logical next step for JetBlue and their shareholders.
The Big Four
The big four airlines in the United States are (in alphabetical order): American, Delta, Southwest and United. Generally speaking, size is determined by fleet size, number of routes, number of flights and number of employees. For instance, Delta operates 877 aircraft and flies to 275 destinations on six continents. Allegiant operates 122 aircraft and flies to 129 destinations worldwide. That’s a lot of flights for consumers to pick from. And now Jet Blue/Spirt is about to give you even more options.
The Big Five
If this merger is approved, JetBlue will become part of the “Big Five”. As of today (pre merger) it is already the 7th largest airline in the US. Now, it’s unclear if they will continue to brand themselves as “New York’s Hometown airline” but that’s something flyers should consider. How they market themselves is going to affect how often you fly with them. Which means there may be more changes in store than just size of fleet and flight options. Is an entire makeover of their image on the horizon?
Keep Your Spirits Up!
If you are a loyal Spirit passenger, not to worry. Nothing will happen overnight. Airline mergers take time. There will be some rough air (see what I did there) merging the two operations, but in the end, they will work out all the bugs in the systems and bring this merger in for a landing. What?!? Two flight puns in one paragraph? You know it!
True Blue
Sign up to Jet Blue’s Member’s Program now. Even if you have not flown with JetBlue before, odds are they fly to places you like to go. That’s why I suggest you take part in their TrueBlue program. It’s free to join and you can begin receiving communications from them about deals and discounts.They are particularly active on social media as well so keep an eye out for deals to what can only be an increasing number of destinations.
Fleet Size
While JetBlue will become the 5th largest airline in the US, their aircraft count would need to rapidly increase to be on the same footing as the top four airlines in the US. After the merger and if no other planes are immediately delivered, JetBlue’s fleet size will be about 458 plus about 300 on order. As of today, here are the fleet sizes of the other four: American-913, Delta-877, Southwest-737, United-840. This is a very, very good thing for flyers like you.
Low Cost Carriers
With this merger, watch for smaller or low cost US airlines to make some strategic moves to capture Spirit customers before JetBlue has a chance to get their hands on them. Airlines to watch include: Allegiant, Avelo, Breeze, Frontier and Sun Country.
Route Adjustments
Over the next 24 months, JetBlue will begin to evaluate and combine its expanded route network. This may mean, they will not only strengthen certain routes but also cut others. I’d be paying specific attention to airports where Spirit is the only carrier. It’s possible their presence will grow in larger markets after they cut those lesser traveled routes but time will tell.
Pricing
It’s hard to tell (at this point) how competitive JetBlue’s pricing will be after this merger. Obviously they will offer promotions to attract attention, but only time will tell if they migrate towards competing with the “big four” or if they remain a true “low cost” carrier.
JetBlue was founded in 1998 and began operations in 2000 out of its headquarters in New York City. It has weathered some pretty nasty climates over the years and had its share of growing pains. But the airline built a loyal customer base. That base is vocal about changes but most have remained loyal. They have expanded into popular destinations and have grown steadily over the years. We’ll all just have to wait and see if this merger is the next chapter of the JetBlue story or the beginning of the end for a once promising airline.
