The 43 km (27 mi) Inca Trail takes four days, camping every night. A maximum of 500 permits are issued for the Inca Trail each day, over half of which are taken up by guides and the porters who lug baggage, as well as tents, food and even tables and benches, up some incredibly steep paths.
