SECRETARY-GENERAL/FINANCING FOR DEVELOPMENT
This morning, the Secretary-General spoke in person this morning at the opening of the Economic and Social Council’s 2021 Forum on Financing for Development.
He noted that, since the pandemic began one year ago, no element of our multilateral response has gone as it should, with some 120 million people having fallen back into extreme poverty.
He warned that the crisis is far from over, with the speed of infections now increasing.
Mr. Guterres said that many governments face an impossible choice between servicing debt or saving lives, but he stressed that, in reality, there is just one choice: to take action to avert a global debt crisis.
The Secretary-General called for urgent action in six areas:
First, to make vaccines available to all countries in need; second, to reverse the fall in concessional financing; third, to make sure that funds go where they are needed most; fourth, to address the debt crisis with debt suspension, relief, and liquidity for countries that need it; fifth, to invest in people through a new social contract based on solidarity; and, lastly, to relaunch economies in a sustainable and equitable manner, consistent with the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Climate Agreement.
MYANMAR
Turning to Myanmar, I can tell you that the Secretary-General reiterates his deep concern about the developments in that country. The most recent reports of violence and killings by security forces are appalling.
The Security Council has clearly called for a stop to the violence and invited the parties to pursue dialogue and reconciliation. The Secretary-General encourages all Member States to use their influence to impress on the parties the need to stop this escalation and to take steps that will facilitate the return to civilian rule. He emphasizes the key role that the region can and must play in advising the national actors to take steps towards the return of peace and stability in Myanmar.
The United Nations Special Envoy, Christine Schraner Burgener, is currently in the region, where she is meeting with key interlocutors in order to promote an effective international response based on a unified regional effort. She remains ready to visit Myanmar at the earliest opportunity.
From Myanmar, our colleagues there said they are appalled by the violence since Friday in which some 93 protestors were reportedly killed, many of them in the city of Bago. The UN team in Myanmar says it is particularly concerned over reports of the use of heavy artillery against protestors.
The UN Human Rights Office says that, as of today, credible reports show at least 707 people have been killed since the military seized control of the Government more than two months ago. It is believed this may be significantly higher. Since 1 February, thousands of people have been injured, many of them seriously.
NIGERIA
On Nigeria, the Secretary-General strongly condemns the reported attack by militants in Damasak town in Borno State that took place on 11 April, which resulted in five civilian deaths and the destruction of three humanitarian facilities. He expresses his condolences to the families of the victims and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured. He calls on the Nigerian authorities to spare no efforts in identifying and swiftly bringing the perpetrators to justice.
For his part, Edward Kallon, the Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, said that humanitarian aid operations and facilities are the lifeline for people affected by violence and conflict in north-east Nigeria.
He said that these operations in Damasak will be reduced due to the violent attack. This will impact the support to 8,800 internally displaced people and 76,000 people in the host communities receiving humanitarian assistance and protection.
He called on armed parties to observe and commit to international humanitarian law and human rights law, and ensure the protection of civilians, humanitarian property, and personnel.

United Nations Video: Pandemic could be under control in months with concerted effort: WHO COVID-19 Update (12 April 2021)
WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the COVID-19 pandemic is “a long way from over,” but stressed that with a “concerted effort to apply public health measures alongside equitable vaccination, we could bring this pandemic under control in a matter of months.”
Speaking at a press conference in Geneva today (12 Apr), Dr Tedros said January and February witness six consecutive weeks of declining cases, but the world has since seen seven consecutive weeks of increasing cases, and four weeks of increasing deaths, with last week being the “fourth-highest number of cases in a single week so far."
The WHO chief said, “Make no mistake, vaccines are a vital and powerful tool. But they are not the only tool. We say this day after day, week after week. And we will keep saying it. Physical distancing works. Masks work. Hand hygiene works. Ventilation works. Surveillance, testing, contact tracing, isolation, supportive quarantine and compassionate care – they all work to stop infections and save lives.”
Dr Tedros warned that intensive care units in many countries are “overflowing and people are dying – and it’s totally avoidable.” He explained that, in some countries, despite continuing transmission, “restaurants and night clubs are full, markets are open and crowded with few people taking precautions.” He added, “Some people appear to be taking the approach that if they are relatively young, it doesn’t matter if they get COVID-19. This disease is not flu. Young, healthy people have died. And we still don’t fully understand the long-term consequences of infection for those who survive.”
The Director-General noted however that the decline in the first two months of the year “shows that this virus and its variants can be stopped,” adding that there are “many reasons for optimism.”
Dr Kate O'Brien, Director of WHO’s Department of Immunizations, Vaccines and Biologicals, said reducing transmission alongside scaling up immunity through vaccination “reduces the likelihood of having emergence of variants that could escape from vaccine induced immunity.” She added that, while people have a desire to get on with more regular life as people become vaccinated, this is the “very time when we should be as diligent as ever.”
Dr O'Brien said there was no data at this point on any “mix and match regimens” for vaccines, although “certainly there probably are individuals around the world who have had a different product for their second dose than the product that they had as their first dose.” She welcomed studies that would look into such regimens, because “clearly from a supply perspective and also from a programmatic perspective, where many countries have more than one and some countries up to three, four or five products in the country, would be very valuable to have these kinds of data to inform how best to use the vaccines.”

United Nations Video: Health is an investment for the future - Interview with Aboubacar Kampo (Awake at Night)
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has designated European Space Agency astronaut Thomas Pesquet as Goodwill Ambassador on the International Day of Human Space Flight (12 April).
The French astronaut has been working together with FAO since 2018 to raise global awareness on food security and climate change. The nomination will reinforce and support the FAO’s advocacy to end hunger and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
At the ceremony, FAO Director-General QU Dongyu applauded Thomas Pesquet’s commitment and support to FAO’s mission.

“Over the years, Thomas has worked in support of the FAO to help raise awareness of the impact of climate change on agriculture, of the importance of access to nutritious foods, and of how critical it is for us to manage our natural resources wisely, reducing food loss and waste. I am delighted that today you are committing to working even more closely with us, in your new capacity as an FAO Goodwill Ambassador.”
The newly appointed Goodwill Ambassador said he was honored by the nomination. He explained that the experience gained from his first space mission in 2017 made him become more aware of the impact of climate change and extreme weather on planet Earth motivating him to partner with FAO for common good cause.
Having witnessed some of the damages that deforestation and climate change have had on planet Earth from space, Thomas Pesquet called for a joint effort to protect and save the home to 7.8 billion people.
Pesquet will bring the flag of FAO and that of the United Nations with him in his next mission. He will be travelling to the International Space Station (ISS) with the SpaceX Crew Dragon and will spend six months in space with JAXA astronaut Akihiko Hoshide and NASA astronauts Shane Kimbrough and pilot Megan McArthur.

“The goals of those six months onboard the space station – mostly there’s two things; it’s research. We are doing science experiments up there that you couldn’t be doing on Earth because of the conditions of microgravity and the space environment up there. And so, we are sending the results back to all the laboratories on the Earth to make things better, to find new discoveries and to make progress just generally speaking. The other thing that we are doing is also preparing the next steps of space exploration because we have big questions to answer; where did life come from on the Earth? Could life disappear today? Could we lose our atmosphere, lose our water like it happened on Mars for example and that’s why we want to go because we want to answer those questions to know where we come from.”
The goals of the Alpha mission, named after Alpha Centauri, the closest stellar system to Earth, are to make scientific experiments and preparing the next steps for space exploration. For this reason, the astronauts will try to cultivate vegetables on the ISS to understand if in the future it will be possible to bring less food from Earth, and to produce it locally on spaceships during the exploration missions
He said COVID-19 pandemic has affected their preparation work.

“It wasn't easy. I mean, it's certainly been harder for a lot of other people, so I can't complain. But we had to adapt. We had to change the way we're doing things, just like everyone everywhere on the planet. We had to reduce or human interactions. We did everything remotely. We tried to reduce attendance to minimum to all our training activities. We put measures into place obviously mask, social distancing. Everything was being taken very seriously. In spite of all this, we managed to be ready on time, which is quite amazing, but I think it just it just speaks volumes about just the resilience that people have in this space business, but really everywhere on the planet.”
In order to reduce waste, Pesquet has asked to also work on innovative edible packages to bring food to space with the purpose to use these technologies on Earth.
Thomas Pesquet was born in Rouen, France, on 27 February 1978. He was launched to the International Space Station for his first six-month mission, Proxima, in November 2016. Pesquet’s second spaceflight was announced on 28 July 2020.
12th April 2021 marks 60 years since Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin completed one full orbit of the Earth, becoming the first human to travel to space. To celebrate the beginning of the space era for mankind, the United Nations General Assembly declared in 2011, 12th April as the International Day of Human Space Flight.

Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are digital tokens that enable true ownership over any digital asset - song, artwork or a moment in sports. You can’t touch it, but you can own it.
A digital image by the cutting-edge artist Beeple sold for a whopping US$69.4 million at auction, in a record-setting sale for a piece of art that does not exist in the physical world.
Christie’s auction house sold the art piece on March 11 after a two-week online auction involving more than 180 bids. The final auction price tag is the third-highest ever for a living artist, and the most anyone has ever paid for a non-fungible token, or NFT. This was the first time that Christie’s has ever offered a digital-only piece of art with an NFT to guarantee its authenticity.

As a standoff between tens of thousands of protesting farmers and the Indian government continues to intensify over new legislation farmers claim will threaten their livelihoods, Taz Dhaliwal looks back at the factors that led to the demonstrations that have garnered international attention.
Farmers in India have been rallying for months against three agricultural laws enacted Sept. 20 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.
The Indian government has argued the changes will give farmers more freedom, but farmers are concerned the new laws will drive down their products’ prices with no safeguards to protect them against corporate takeovers and exploitation.
But the crisis in India's agricultural sector is nothing new as the industry has been suffering for decades. Taz explains.
