Based on evidence indicative of a detrimental change in COVID-19 epidemiology, the Technical Advisory Group on SARS-CoV-2 Virus Evolution (TAG-VE) has advised the World Health Organization (WHO) that this variant should be designated as a VOC, and the WHO has designated B.1.1.529 as a Variant of Concern (VOC) named Omicron.
The TAG-VE is an independent group of experts that periodically monitors and evaluates the evolution of SARS-CoV-2 and assesses if specific mutations and combinations of mutations alter the behaviour of the virus.
WHO's COVID-19 Technical lead Dr Maria Van Kerkhove today (26 Nov) said, “based upon the information that we have, particularly from South Africa, they have advised WHO that this variant should be classified as a variant of concern. So, today we are announcing
Van Kerkhove said, “Omicron, B.1.1.529, is named as a variant of concern because it has some concerning properties. This variant has a large number of mutations and some of these mutations have some worrying characteristics. Right now, there are many studies that are underway. There's a lot of work that is ongoing in South Africa and in other countries to better characterize the variant itself in terms of transmissibility, in terms of severity and any impact on our countermeasures, like the use of diagnostics, therapeutics or vaccines. So far, there's little information, but those studies are underway, so we need researchers to have the time to carry those out. And WHO will inform the public and our partners and our member states as soon as we have more information."
She noted that “once a variant is classified as a variant of concern, it's really important that we have good SARS-CoV-2 surveillance around the world, including better genomic sequencing, because we want to be able to detect this variant where it is circulating. It's also really important that studies are undertaken in the field to look at any clusters and also the studies that are needed in the lab to look to see if there's any changes in severity, any changes in our impact on diagnostics, therapeutics or vaccines."
The WHO scientist informed that the TAG-VE will be meeting regularly about Omicron. She said, “it will take days to weeks for some of these studies to be undertaken. It's really important that these studies are done, and they're done comprehensively. As soon as we have more information, we will make that information public. But it's important to know that there's a lot that you could do to keep yourself and your loved ones safe."
There are a number of studies underway and the TAG-VE will continue to evaluate this variant. WHO will communicate new findings with Member States and to the public as needed.
Van Kerkhove said, “we understand that people are concerned. The good thing is that we have monitoring systems around the world to detect these variants very quickly. This variant was detected a few weeks ago, and already scientists are sharing research with us, information with us so that we can take action. What's really important as an individual is to lower your exposure. The measures, these proven public health measures, have never been more important: Distancing, wearing of a mask, making sure that it's over your nose and mouth with clean hands, making sure you avoid crowded spaces, be in rooms where there's good ventilation and when it's your turn, get vaccinated."
The B.1.1.529 variant was first reported to WHO from South Africa on 24 November 2021. The epidemiological situation in South Africa has been characterised by three distinct peaks in reported cases, the latest of which was predominantly the Delta variant. In recent weeks, infections have increased steeply, coinciding with the detection of B.1.1.529 variant. The first known confirmed B.1.1.529 infection was from a specimen collected on 9 November 2021.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, emerging data and reports from those on the front lines, have shown that all types of violence against women and girls, particularly domestic violence, has intensified. This is the Shadow Pandemic growing amidst the COVID-19 crisis, and we need a global collective effort to stop it. More needs to be done to prioritize addressing violence against women in COVID-19 response and recovery efforts. As countries implemented lockdown measures to stop the spread of the coronavirus, violence against women, especially domestic violence, intensified – in some countries, calls to helplines have increased five-fold.
On this occasion, the UN Chamber Music Society will dedicate this concert to organizations committed to helping to eliminate violence against women: Violence Against Women aims to bring about societal change to members of the Palestinian society, especially women, by providing the right to a decent life, equality and equal. Headquartered in Nazareth, the organization is committed to eliminating violence directed against women must be eliminated, as well as the conditions for women's oppression. HACEY Health Initiative works to improve the health and productivity of women and girls in Nigeria and underserved populations in Africa. Their programmes integrates health and economic empowerment programs, and addresses the root causes of gender-based violence by expanding opportunities to finance, counseling, and psycho-social support to women and girls across Nigeria.
Opening remarks will be delivered by Melissa Fleming, UN Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications. The concert will feature special performances from musicians of Daniel Barenboim’s West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, including violinist Yamen Saadi; the Karajan Trio of the Berlin Philharmonic, Syrian clarinetist Kinan Azmeh, and the Trio Joubran. Founded in 2016, the UN Chamber Music Society is dedicated to promoting the United Nations’ goals and values at large - through the universal language of music.

SECRETARY-GENERAL
In Colombia this morning, the Secretary-General held a meeting with the heads of the Comprehensive System of Truth, Justice, Reparation and Non-repetition. He also attended an event in commemoration of the Fifth Anniversary of the signing of the Final Peace Agreement.
The Secretary-General stressed that after more than five decades of conflict, and awareness of the suffering it caused, we have a moral obligation to ensure that this peace process is successful. He noted that this anniversary provides an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the Final Peace Agreement, acknowledge the challenges it faces, and renew our collective commitment to fulfill its promise to build a stable and lasting peace.
Following the event, the Secretary-General had a bilateral meeting with leaders of the former FARC-EP guerilla movement.
And this afternoon, he will meet with representatives of civil society; he’ll visit the “La Paz es Productiva” fair in Bogota and will also hold a meeting with President Iván Duque and officials of his government, as well as with victims of the armed conflict. This will be followed by a joint press conference with President Duque.
And yesterday, as you know, he visited a former Training and Reintegration area in Llano Grande, in the town of Dabeiba. He said that he appreciated having the opportunity to listen to community members, indigenous and Government authorities.
The Secretary-General pointed out that they know better than anyone that peace does not occur overnight. It is hard to build, take care of, and sustain, he emphasized.
In the afternoon, during an event in commemoration of the peace process in Apartadó, the Secretary-General noted that the Final Peace Agreement had the success of conceiving peace in Colombia not as a process imposed from above
but as a great construction effort. He stressed that we must follow the path shown by the negotiations on the Agreement and ensure that women have their central place in the design and implementation of development programmes.
Mr. Guterres is expected back in New York tonight.
LIBYA
Jan Kubiš, the Special Envoy for Libya, briefed the Security Council by VTC from Tripoli on the process leading up to the 24th of December elections. He said that a preliminary list of presidential candidates is expected to be announced later today.
He warned that the political climate in Libya remains heavily polarized. He noted that vocal opposition to the holding of elections on the basis of the existing legal framework persists, as some leaders and constituencies continue questioning the legality of the electoral laws, while tensions are rising on the eligibility of some high-profile candidates. Mr. Kubiš called on all those that challenge the process or the candidates to channel them through the existing judicial mechanisms and to fully respect the verdict of the judicial authority.
He said that the presence of foreign fighters and mercenaries continues to be of concern, although the ceasefire has continued to hold.
Mr. Kubiš told the Council that he believes it is necessary to urgently relocate the Head of the UN Support Mission in Libya, UNSMIL, to Tripoli, and he noted that he has previously expressed support for splitting the positions of the Special Envoy and the Head of Mission, and for locating the Head of UNSMIL in Tripoli. In order to create conditions for this, he added, on the 17th of November 2021, he tendered his resignation. The Secretary-General yesterday accepted his resignation, effective as of the 10th of December.

In a statement on Friday the WHO said the number of cases of this variant, initially named B.1.1.529, appeared to be increasing in almost all of South Africa's provinces.
The WHO has said it will take a few weeks to understand the impact of the new variant, as scientists work to determine how transmissible it is.

Global Video: Generation gap: Young Canadians blame boomers for growing disparity, study finds
Feeling the pressures of a society plagued by climate change, soaring home prices, economic inequality and poverty, many young Canadians say they are feeling less than optimistic about the direction of our nation and cite the baby boom generation as one of the root causes of disparity and division in society.
A new study done by Angus Reid Institute, in partnership with Cardus, has found a growing divide between younger and older generations. As Erica Vella reports, experts say it’s a similar sentiment to the generation divide of the 1960s.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau held onto another minority government for the Liberals in the 2021 federal election, despite coming in second in the popular vote, behind the Conservatives. In fact, with the First Past the Post system, the Liberals gained nearly 40 more seats than the Conservatives.
So what would electoral reform look like in Canada and what are some of the alternatives to the current First Past the Post system? And what changes could be made to make the results better reflect how people vote?

Global Video: Zed Files: Inside a "ghost hunt" in a 19th century barn
Global News journalist Rachel Gilmore joined mentalist Jaymes White for a "ghost hunt" at the Arcand Homestead, an old farming property on the outskirts of Ottawa that dates back to the 1800s.
White says he’s a “skeptic” about the paranormal, but he’s also run seances since 2015, using Victorian-era techniques to allow guests to “contact” the unknown. His seances regularly sell out and, according to his website, “people have been known to run out of the locations screaming and crying.”
Armed with an iPhone and stabilizer, Gilmore sought to bring an open-minded but skeptical lens to an abandoned barn on the property, but she never imagined what would actually go down...
