BURKINA FASO
The Secretary-General is following developments in Burkina Faso with deep concern. He is particularly worried about the whereabouts and safety of President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré, as well as the worsening security situation, following the coup carried out on January 23rd by sections of the armed forces.
The Secretary-General strongly condemns any attempt to take over a government by the force of arms. He calls on the coup leaders to lay down their arms and to ensure the protection of the physical integrity of the President and of the institutions of Burkina Faso.
The Secretary-General calls on all actors to exercise restraint and opt for dialogue. The United Nations reiterates its full commitment to the preservation of the constitutional order and reaffirms its support to the people of Burkina Faso in their efforts to find solutions to the multifaceted challenges facing the country.

UKRAINE
The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says that as of today, some 2.9 million people will need humanitarian assistance this year in Ukraine, with most of these people living in non-Government-controlled areas in the east.
In 2022, our humanitarian response partners aim to help 1.8 million people, with a funding requirement of $190 million.
The humanitarian community in Ukraine is committed to standing with the people of Ukraine and to respond to the existing and potential needs in an impartial, independent and neutral manner.
AFGHANISTAN
The Spokesman provided an update on Afghanistan, following the 5.3 magnitude earthquake that struck in Qadis District on 17 January.
The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says that on 20 January, another earthquake struck the area and many people are afraid of going into their homes. They are currently living in makeshift shelters or traditional tents in cold weather conditions.
Inter-agency assessments continue in Qadis, Qala-e-Naw and Muqur districts, but some areas remain inaccessible due to heavy snowfall in recent days. The inter-agency teams have thus far identified 1,092 families, that is about 7,644 people, who are in need of humanitarian assistance.
People in impacted areas are using water wells that are unsafe, and our humanitarian colleagues stress that water sources need to be repaired to prevent outbreaks of water-borne diseases.
Emergency response efforts are ongoing in parallel to the assessments, including food, non-food items, and emergency shelter provided by the International Organization for Migration, the UN Refugee Agency and the Afghan Red Crescent for about 300 families thus far. More assistance is planned in the coming days.
The reported number of deaths due to the earthquake stands at 27 people.

Our very name was coined to describe the alliance fighting the Nazi regime and its allies.
Our Charter was drafted in San Francisco as the Dachau concentration camp was liberated.
The United Nations must always be on the frontline of the fight against antisemitism and all other forms of religious bigotry and racism.
Today, we witness an alarming resurgence of xenophobia and hate.
Antisemitism – the oldest and most persistent form of prejudice – is rising yet again.
Attempts to downplay or downright deny the Holocaust are proliferating.
No society is immune to irrationality or intolerance.
We must never forget that the Holocaust could have been prevented. The desperate pleas of the victims fell on deaf ears. Too few spoke out, too few listened – fewer still stood up in solidarity.
Remembering the past is crucial to safeguarding the future.
Silence in the face of hatred is complicity.
Today, let us commit to never be indifferent to the suffering of others, and never forget what happened or let it be forgotten by others.

We begin another year in the grips of a global pandemic.
COVID-19 continues to upend lives, plans and hopes.
The only certainty is more uncertainty.
Meanwhile, inequalities are growing.
Inflation is rising.
The climate crisis, pollution and biodiversity loss rage on.
We face a cauldron of political unrest and ferocious conflicts.
Mistrust among world powers is reaching fever pitch.
And the information superhighway is clogged with hatred and lies, giving oxygen to the worst impulses of humanity.
Excellencies,
We all know this.
Now is not the time to simply list and lament challenges.
Now is the time to act.
All these challenges are, at heart, failures of global governance.
From global health to digital technology, many of today’s multilateral frameworks are outdated and no longer fit for purpose.
They do not protect critical global public goods that are intended to support humanity’s wellbeing – from the global economy and finance systems to the health of our planet.
Nor are multilateral frameworks delivering on our common aspirations for peace, sustainable development, human rights and dignity for all.
My report on Our Common Agenda is a starting point to addressing these challenges and threats, based on unity and solidarity.
Developing countries need this more than ever.
Excellencies,
I want to begin the year by raising five alarms – on COVID-19, global finance, climate action, lawlessness in cyber space, and peace and security.
We face a 5-alarm global fire that requires the full mobilization of all countries.
First, we must go into emergency mode in the COVID-19 battle.
Omicron is yet another warning.
The next variant may be worse.
Stopping the spread anywhere must be at the top of the agenda everywhere.
At the same time, the virus cannot be used as cover to undermine human rights, shrink civic space and stifle press freedom.
Governments have also imposed disproportionate restrictions that penalize developing countries – for example, what I described some time ago as “travel apartheid”.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused chaos in education worldwide.
Some 1.6 billion school and college students had their studies interrupted at the peak of the pandemic -- and it’s not over yet.
Today, school closures continue to disrupt the lives of over 31 million students, exacerbating a global learning crisis.
Unless we take action, the share of children leaving school in developing countries who are unable to read could increase from 53 to 70 percent.
But the turmoil in education goes beyond questions of access and inequality.
Our world is changing at a dizzying pace, with technological innovation, unprecedented changes in the world of work, the onset of the climate emergency, and a widespread loss of trust between people and institutions.
Conventional education systems are struggling to deliver the knowledge, skills and values we need to create a greener, better and safer future for all.
Education is a preeminent public good, and an essential enabler for the entire 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The international community cannot afford to be agnostic about its provision, quality and relevance.
That is why I am convening a Summit on Transforming Education later this year.
The time has come to reignite our collective commitment to education.
That means investing in comprehensive plans to help students recover from learning losses.
It means putting education at the heart of broader recovery efforts, aimed at transforming economies and societies and accelerating progress on sustainable development.
It means financial solidarity with developing countries.
And it means embarking on a process of reflection and analysis to identify how national education systems can evolve and transform between now and 2030.
The Summit on Transforming Education will be the first time that world leaders, young people and all education stakeholders come together to consider these fundamental questions.
On this International Day of Education, and as we prepare for the Summit later this year, I call on everyone to unite around education as a public good and a top political priority for the recovery and beyond.

Global Video: What are “incidental COVID-19” cases and how do they affect hospitalizations?
As the Omicron COVID-19 variant continues to drive increased cases and hospital admissions in Canada, several jurisdictions have changed the way they report hospitalizations. They now separate between those who are admitted due to COVID-19 and those who are admitted for another reason but test positive during screening.
This is often being referred to as an "incidental COVID hospitalization" which means people in hospital with the disease are not necessarily there because of COVID-19.
But doctors say there is a lot more to an incidental case than someone testing positive despite coming in for something like a broken arm or a fall. Sean Previl breaks down what "incidental COVID" means and why medical professionals are saying the numbers don't tell the whole story.

Global Video: The Next Hubble: Why the James Webb space telescope could reshape our understanding of the universe
NASA’s $10-billion James Webb telescope – the successor to the famous Hubble Space telescope – is due to be launched into outer space this week.
Rather than operating in the visible light spectrum and ultraviolet, as Hubble did, it will be able to look at the Infrared slice of the light spectrum, allowing it to see objects previously hidden to the Hubble's gaze.
Astronomers say it will kick off a new era into the discoveries of the universe. Alyssa Julie explains why.

Global Video: Billionaire space race brings new frontiers, challenges for future of space travel
On Dec. 3, NASA announced three U.S. companies that would receive over $400 million in government funding to develop commercial space stations – Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin, Nanoracks and Northrop Grumman.
The International Space Station, which is now more than 20 years old, is facing retirement within the next decade and the agency is turning to the private sector in its search for a replacement.
NASA has increasingly tapped private companies, like Elon Musk's SpaceX, to shuttle its astronauts into space. As the private space race heats up, it's allowed the agency to turn its attention to new frontiers, but it also presents its own set of challenges.

From viral vector vaccines like AstraZeneca to mRNA vaccines like Pfizer and Moderna, they all have the same goal: to train your body how to fight off COVID-19. But, they use different strategies to create antibodies.
For example, AstraZeneca uses a crippled virus to deliver the coronavirus spike protein, while Pfizer and Moderna use mRNA, the part of the coronavirus' genetic code and teaches your cells how to make a protein that will trigger an immune response.

Global Video: Generation gap: Young Canadians blame boomers for growing disparity, study finds
Feeling the pressures of a society plagued by climate change, soaring home prices, economic inequality and poverty, many young Canadians say they are feeling less than optimistic about the direction of our nation and cite the baby boom generation as one of the root causes of disparity and division in society.
A new study done by Angus Reid Institute, in partnership with Cardus, has found a growing divide between younger and older generations. As Erica Vella reports, experts say it’s a similar sentiment to the generation divide of the 1960s.
