United Nations Video: Ocean Conference No Single Use Plastic | United Nations
There could be more plastic than fish in the ocean by the year 2050 – and a United Nations Conference convening in Lisbon bans all single-use plastic at the venue in Lisbon as part of a push for sustainability there.
The Altice Arena has made a strong commitment to preventing waste and employing recycling, according to spokeswoman Felipa Nascimento.
As some 8,000 participants head there for the UN Ocean Conference, she
describes how the venue is using carpet made from old textiles, water stations instead of single-use plastic bottles, and recyclable.
“It’s work, but we believe it’s work that has to be done,” she says.
The Conference convenes in Lisbon from 27 June to 1 July 2022.

Next week, the Secretary-General’s focus will be on the environment and biodiversity and how they have both been impacted by climate change.
He just landed in Lisbon, a few hours ago, which is the site of the 2022 UN Ocean Conference.
On Sunday, the Secretary-General will address and engage with youths at the UN Ocean Conference Youth and Innovation Forum, alongside the President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. He will be present at the Conference opening ceremony which takes place on Monday, and there he will be joined by the leaders of the two co-hosting nations – that is Portugal’s President Sousa and Kenya, the second co-hosting nation. President Uhuru Kenyatta will also be in attendance.
The Ocean Conference aims to incentivize action to propel much needed science-based innovation solutions aimed at starting a new chapter of global ocean action.
At the Conference, the Secretary-General will stress that we face an “Ocean Emergency” and that we must turn the tide. He is expected to focus on issues related to the need to invest in sustainable ocean economies for food, renewable energy and livelihoods, and the need to protect the oceans, and the people whose lives and livelihoods depend on them, from the impacts of climate change.
The Secretary-General is expected back New York on Tuesday 28 June.
Then on Friday, 1 July, he will head to Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname, for the 43rd Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM – the Caribbean Community. The Secretary-General will attend the opening ceremony of the CARICOM summit on July 3rd.
The Caribbean region is among the world’s hardest hit by worsening climate impacts, despite having contributed among the least to the problem, due to very low emissions.
In March, the IPCC designated the Caribbean region as highly climate-vulnerable, meaning its people are 15 times more likely to die of climate impacts.
During the Conference, the Secretary-General will discuss his recent announcement that the UN will work to ensure that all people on Earth are covered by early warning systems within five years, that is up from 6 in 10 people now.
In the face of severe climate challenges, and with very scarce resources, the Caribbean region is taking vital steps to build climate resilience, which the Secretary-General will observe first-hand during his stay in Suriname. He will visit an indigenous community in the rainforest, to learn more about harnessing indigenous knowledge to help adapt to climate impacts.
He will also underscore the importance of nature-based climate solutions during a visit to a coastal mangrove site, where he will witness the Suriname coastline’s susceptibility to flooding, which has been heightened by sea level rise and extreme weather events resulting from the climate crisis.
We expect the Secretary-General back in New York on July 4th.
DEPUTY SECRETARY-GENERAL
The Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, continues her stay in Kigali, where she attended the official opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting hosted by Paul Kagame, the President of Rwanda. She also attended an interactive event hosted by the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Patricia Scotland.
Ms. Mohammed had a meeting with President [Uhuru]Kenyatta of Kenya during which she updated him on the work of the Global Crisis Response Group and discussed efforts to advance sustainable development and durable peace in the East African region. She also had discussions with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada who is a co-chair of the SDGs Advocates.
In the afternoon, the Deputy Secretary-General visited the ArtRwanda Ubuhanzi Incubation Center, which is a UN-supported nationwide talent search project aiming at identifying and supporting the young and talented Rwandans within the creative arts industry.
Tomorrow, she will continue her discussions with the participating leaders, including President Kagame.

The ocean bears the brunt of the three planetary crises of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution.
But the ocean can also be our biggest ally in responding to these threats.
The ocean generates half the oxygen we need and absorbs a quarter of all carbon dioxide emissions.
It is not just the lungs of the planet but also its largest carbon sink.
The ocean is the primary regulator of the global climate and provides billions of people with food and livelihoods.
The science is clear: we, humans are responsible for ocean problems – overfishing, coral bleaching, pollution – so we have to provide the solutions.
We need new technologies, for example to harness renewable energy from the ocean – and we need nature-based solutions, such as protecting and restoring mangroves and seagrasses.
We need global partnerships and investments.
Enhanced ocean observation and the collection of ocean data are paramount to understanding humanity’s impacts on the ocean.
I am counting on the scientific community, technological experts, governments and young people to provide solutions that will usher in a new future.
The Covid-19 pandemic has pulled back the curtain on inequality in our world.
Ocean issues may seem far from questions of human rights, women’s equality and justice – but these are actually all linked to the blue economy.
When we protect the ocean, we are addressing the defining issues of our times, from food security and poverty, to climate change.
This year’s Ocean Conference in Lisbon is a call to action and a stage to showcase commitment for a sustainable blue economy that can create jobs while protecting the planet.
It can provide political momentum for the implementation of the global agreement on harmful fishery subsidies that will hopefully be adopted under World Trade Organization this year.
It can also mobilize ambition to define an ambitious new legal instrument on plastics pollution.
Let us listen to the people’s voices and the sound of nature. They deserve meaningful action.
I have a special appeal for the youth: hold us to our promises. Challenge us to do better. Demand that this Conference is a turning point in humanity’s relationship with the ocean.

Millions of women in the United States are losing the constitutional right to abortion, after the Supreme Court overturned its landmark Roe v Wade ruling of 50 years ago, which gave women the right to a termination.
It means that women across the US no longer have the right to abortion guaranteed by the constitution and individual states are entitled to ban the procedure.
Bans in individual states began immediately after the new Supreme Court ruling. 13 states had already passed so-called trigger laws to automatically bring in a ban.
The ruling has delighted opponents of abortion and enraged pro-choice campaigners who have vowed to restore US abortion rights. President Joe Biden described it as "a tragic error”.

Global Video: Bisexual erasure: What it is, and how it impacts mental health
Almost 500,000 people in Canada identify as bisexual, according to official data from Statistics Canada.
However, although a growing portion of the Canadian population identifies as bisexual, those who come out as such are still met with denial, or their identities are questioned. This phenomenon is referred to as bisexual erasure.
One example of this is when a bisexual person is said to be “experimenting,” or transitioning to gay or lesbian, as described by 2SLGBTQQIA+ organizations, like GLAAD or Pflag.
Global News’ Alyssa Julie explains what bisexual erasure is and how it can affect the mental health of those impacted.

Global Video: Raging Asian Women make themselves heard through traditional Taiko drumming
In celebration of Asian Heritage Month and Pride in Canada, a group of pan-Asian women and non-binary drummers called Raging Asian Women (RAW), are making themselves heard through the traditional performance of Japanese Taiko drumming, one of the few ensembles of its kind.
In Japanese, "taiko" literally means "drum," first used in ancient Japan over 2000 years ago. However the term has also come to refer to the wider art of traditional and modern Japanese drumming, with a mix of various technical rhythms, forms and instruments.
The origins of RAW lay in “trying to fight against stereotypes of Asian women as submissive or quiet or powerless,” said Jody Chan, one of the drummers of the group.
Y.J., another member of the group, said that “there’s still moments where I just feel a sense of pride and connection that I don’t think I feel anywhere else” when performing or rehearsing.
Asian Heritage Month recognizes the contributions and influence of Canadians from diverse Asian backgrounds to the nation’s history, culture, and achievements. Started in the 1990s, the Government of Canada officially designated the month of May for celebrations in 2002.

Global Video: Parosmia: The long COVID-19 symptom that distorts smell and taste
Parosmia is a post-COVID condition that distorts people's sense of smell, like for third-grade teacher Christine Chipinuck, who has been unable to eat in the staff cafeteria since her diagnosis.
It started a few months after recovering from COVID-19, when her toothpaste suddenly tasted rancid and her favourite drink coffee smelled like gasoline. Sometimes she smells hairspray or vomit all day. There are very few things she can eat.
There's still a lot to learn about this condition and how long it lasts, but the working theory is COVID-19 affects the receptors in the nose.

Global Video: What are “incidental COVID-19” cases and how do they affect hospitalizations?
As the Omicron COVID-19 variant continues to drive increased cases and hospital admissions in Canada, several jurisdictions have changed the way they report hospitalizations. They now separate between those who are admitted due to COVID-19 and those who are admitted for another reason but test positive during screening.
This is often being referred to as an "incidental COVID hospitalization" which means people in hospital with the disease are not necessarily there because of COVID-19.
But doctors say there is a lot more to an incidental case than someone testing positive despite coming in for something like a broken arm or a fall. Sean Previl breaks down what "incidental COVID" means and why medical professionals are saying the numbers don't tell the whole story.

Global Video: The Next Hubble: Why the James Webb space telescope could reshape our understanding of the universe
NASA’s $10-billion James Webb telescope – the successor to the famous Hubble Space telescope – is due to be launched into outer space this week.
Rather than operating in the visible light spectrum and ultraviolet, as Hubble did, it will be able to look at the Infrared slice of the light spectrum, allowing it to see objects previously hidden to the Hubble's gaze.
Astronomers say it will kick off a new era into the discoveries of the universe. Alyssa Julie explains why.
