Secretary-General António Guterres, actor and ocean activist Jason Momoa, and the President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, gathered today (26 Jun) at Carcavelos Beach, in Portugal, with delegates from all over the world, kickstarting the Ocean Conference that will take place this week in Lisbon.
Momoa made a special appearance alongside UN Special Envoy for the Ocean Peter Thomson.
Under the blazing sun at Carcavelos, surrounded on the wide sandy beach by youth, including his own children, Momoa said “without a healthy ocean, life as we know it in our planet would not exist.”
Momoa received the ‘Nature’s Baton’ from Special Envoy Thomson, a symbol of the link between the world’s existential challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss and the state of the ocean’s health.
The two-day event brought together young activists from some 165 countries with a shared goal: protecting the Ocean.
Addressing the Forum, Guterres said the fossil fuel industry, has for decades “been spending millions and millions in false science, in public relations. Trying to give the impression that the fossil fuels are not really contaminating the world and that climate change was not exactly what people would say.”
Comparing it to the tobacco industry, he said, “it’s time for these behaviours to be seriously condemned.”
Speaking in front of 100 youth advocates who gathered to inspire, amplify, and accelerate youth action for our ocean, Guterres reiterated the need to rescue the planet.
At Carcavelos beach, on the edge of the ocean near the centre of his home city, Lisbon, the Secretary-General apologized on behalf of his generation for the state of the oceans, for the state of biodiversity and for the state of climate change.
He said, “let's be honest when I look at myself, and my own behaviour, my footprint in the planet is too big. And there's my footprint in the planet is too big, we have now the use of about 1.4 of our planets, and if the whole world would have the lifestyle and the living conditions of developed countries, we will be now using three planets, but we have only one.”
President Rebelo de Sousa encouraged young people to participate. He said, “if that's the case of having the way of participating, wonderful, if you don't have it, you force it. You must force it.”
Youth activist Carlos Perez, from Colombia called for people “to demand for an Ocean Ministry.”
Perez, one of the liveliest of the young activists said, “what we think is that we need policy frameworks. We need policy frameworks to work on to have a baseline to work all around the globe. This is why we invite you, youth delegates, citizens, artists, youth delegates, leaders of the world, to demand for an Ocean Ministry. It is time to get our connecting force to the value it deserves.”
The Forum was a unique opportunity for young people to contribute to the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG14), just before the start of the UN Ocean Conference, taking place from 27 June through 1 July, to seek science-based and innovative solutions to improve the health of our ocean.
Young entrepreneurs, innovators, and solutionists scaled up their initiatives, projects, and ideas with professional training and matchmaking with mentors, investors, the private sector, and government officials to maximize their impact.
The governments of Portugal and Kenya co-hosted the event, organized by the UN Global Compact Ocean Stewardship Coalition in cooperation with CEiiA, the Municipality of Cascais, Nova School of Business and Economics (NOVA SBE) and Sustainable Ocean Alliance (SOA) supported by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA).

OCEAN CONFERENCE
This morning, in Lisbon, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Guterres, addressed the opening ceremony of the 2022 Ocean Conference, along with the leaders of the two co-hosting nations – Portugal and Kenya.
He warned that we have taken the ocean for granted, and today we face what he would call an “Ocean Emergency”, adding that we must now turn the tide.
The Secretary-General emphasized that we cannot have a healthy planet without a healthy ocean and that our failure to care for the ocean will have ripple effects across the entire 2030 Agenda. He called on all to do their part to make a difference for the oceans.
Also today, while addressing the media in a joint press encounter with the Presidents of Portugal and Kenya, the Secretary-General warned that our oceans are issuing an
SOS. We must work together to right these wrongs, he
stressed.
And just a short while ago, the Secretary-General also briefed by video conference the G7 leaders in a closed session. His remarks underscored the continuing global impact, especially on developing countries, and the food crises, because of the war in Ukraine.
JASON MOMOA
Movie star and activist Jason Momoa, who is in Portugal for the conference, was designated as the UN Environment Programme’s Advocate for Life Below Water.
The Aquaman actor, who has worked with Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii and rePurpose Global organizations, described how humbled he felt to be entrusted with the responsibility to promote ocean health.
CRIMINAL TRIBUNALS
The Secretary-General appointed today Judge Graciela Susana Gatti Santana of Uruguay as President of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals for a term commencing on 1 July 2022. The decision was made after consulting the President of the Security Council and the judges of the Mechanism.
The Secretary-General is grateful to Judge Carmel Agius for his service as the President of the Mechanism from 19 January 2019 until 30 June 2022.
Judge Gatti Santana has been a judge for almost 30 years. Since 2012, she has served as a judge at the Mechanism, and she is also a member of the Rules Committee.
DEPUTY SECRETARY-GENERAL
The Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed is now in Paris, in France, where she will attend the pre-Summit of the Transforming Education Summit, which is a precursor to the meetings that will take place in September in New York.
On Saturday, in Kigali, the Deputy Secretary-General had a meeting with the President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, as well as a meeting with the President of Nigeria, President Buhari, during which she provided updates on the work of the Global Crisis Response Group on Food, Energy and Finance. She also discussed efforts to advance durable peace and sustainable development on the African continent.
Yesterday, the Deputy Secretary-General also met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tanzania, Liberata Mulamula, and flew to France in the evening.
AFGHANISTAN
In Afghanistan, the UN team in the country today launched an emergency appeal following last week’s earthquake. The appeal calls for $110 million to urgently help 362,000 people for the next three months in the hardest-hit areas in the provinces of Paktika and Khost.
This new appeal is part of this year’s Humanitarian Response Plan, which calls for $4.4 billion, but it is massively underfunded at just over one third.
We and our partners are borrowing supplies, personnel, and resources from other humanitarian programmes.
Last Friday, the Emergency Relief Coordinator, Martin Griffiths, announced the release of $10 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund to help support the initial phases of our assistance to people in Afghanistan.
For his part, our Humanitarian Coordinator in the country, Ramiz Alakbarov in the country, visited the areas impacted by the earthquake and urged the international community to dig deep at this time, as the population confronts yet another emergency.

Humanity has been waging a war against nature and the world’s ocean — the lungs of our planet and the main source of food for more than a billion people — is now facing a multidimensional crisis driven by climate change, overfishing, habitat loss and pollution.
The UN Ocean Conference in Lisbon, Portugal, 27 June to 1 July 2022, co-organized by the Governments of Portugal and Kenya, is expected to deliver science-driven innovations and solutions to respond to this environmental emergency.
With the expected participation of over 5000 ocean advocates, including world leaders, entrepreneurs, youth, influencers and scientists, the Conference will ignite fresh impetus for advancing Sustainable Development Goal 14– at the heart of global action to protect life under water. Concrete measures will be adopted to build ocean resilience and more sustainable communities, underpinned by a new wave of commitments — following the over 1,300 commitments made at the 2017 Ocean Conference — to restore the ocean’s health.

The Ocean Conference, co-hosted by the Governments of Kenya and Portugal, comes at a critical time as the world is seeking to address many of the deep-rooted problems of our societies laid bare by the COVID-19 pandemic and which will require major structural transformations and common shared solutions that are anchored in the SDGs. To mobilize action, the Conference will seek to propel much needed science-based innovative solutions aimed at starting a new chapter of global ocean action.
In accordance with General Assembly resolution 73/292, at the opening of the Conference consideration will be given to all procedural and organizational matters, including the adoption of the rules of procedure and the agenda, the election of the two Presidents of the Conference, the election of officers, the establishment of subsidiary organs, as appropriate, the appointment of the members of the Credentials Committee, arrangements for the preparation of the report of the Conference and other matters.
The opening plenary will also hear statements by the Presidents of the Conference, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the President of the General Assembly, the President of the Economic and Social Council and the Secretary-General of the Conference.

"When we see the Earth from space, we truly appreciate that we live on a blue planet.
The ocean connects us all.
Sadly, we have taken the ocean for granted, and today we face what I would call an “Ocean Emergency”.
We must turn the tide.
Global heating is pushing ocean temperatures to record levels, creating fiercer and more frequent storms.
Sea levels are rising.
Low-lying island nations face inundation, as do many major coastal cities in the world.
The climate crisis is also making the ocean more acidic, which is disrupting the marine food chain.
Ever more coral reefs are bleaching and dying.
Coastal ecosystems, such as mangroves, seagrasses and wetlands, are being degraded.
Pollution from land is creating vast coastal dead zones.
Nearly 80 per cent of wastewater is discharged into the sea without treatment.
And some 8 million tons of plastic waste enter the oceans ever year.
Without drastic action, this plastic could outweigh all the fish in the oceans by 2050.
Plastic waste is now found in the most remote areas and deepest ocean trenches.
It kills marine life and is doing major harm to communities that depend on fishing and tourism.
One mass of plastic in the Pacific is bigger than France.
Unsustainable fishing practices are also rampant.
Overfishing is crippling fish stocks.
So excellencies,
We cannot have a healthy planet without a healthy ocean.
Our failure to care for the ocean will have ripple effects across the entire 2030 Agenda.
The ocean produces more than half of the oxygen we breathe.
It is the main source of sustenance for more than one billion people.
And industries relating to the ocean employ some 40 million people.
And, a healthy and productive ocean is vital to our shared future.
Five years ago, at the last United Nations Ocean Conference, we issued a Call for Action to reverse the decline in ocean health and to restore its productivity, resilience and ecological integrity. (5.09)
And since then, many communities have come together to protect the marine resources they depend on.
International partnerships have been working to create marine protected areas for the recovery of fisheries and biodiversity.
And where sound management has been undertaken, fisheries have rebounded.
The legal framework for ocean issues is well-established in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which celebrates the 40th anniversary of its adoption this year.
And I am pleased to say that there has been significant progress on a legally binding instrument on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction
A new treaty is being negotiated to address the global plastics crisis that is choking our oceans.
And just a week ago we saw multilateralism in action with a World Trade Organization agreement on ending harmful fishery subsidies.
It is also now well understood that by protecting and restoring the ocean, we are acting to address the climate crisis.
Following COP26, the ocean’s role in addressing climate change is now integrated into the work of the UNFCCC, the organization that as you know, is extremely relevant in relation to fighting climate change. Organizing the different conferences of the States’ parties that have been taken very important decisions, starting with the Paris Agreement.
And we have also seen advances in ocean science and its ability to inform policy.
And we have seen science and traditional knowledge combine for improved ocean management.
All these efforts stand to be improved and scaled up during the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, launched last year". [Excerpt]

A woman has been found dead and a man seriously injured following a major gas explosion that destroyed a house and damaged others in Birmingham, UK.
A man also suffered life-threatening injuries in the blast which happened on Sunday evening.
At least three other homes were damaged and properties were evacuated.
The injured man was rescued from the house by people at the scene but had suffered "very serious" injuries, the ambulance service said, while four other men suffered more minor injuries and were discharged by paramedics.

Global Video: Bisexual erasure: What it is, and how it impacts mental health
Almost 500,000 people in Canada identify as bisexual, according to official data from Statistics Canada.
However, although a growing portion of the Canadian population identifies as bisexual, those who come out as such are still met with denial, or their identities are questioned. This phenomenon is referred to as bisexual erasure.
One example of this is when a bisexual person is said to be “experimenting,” or transitioning to gay or lesbian, as described by 2SLGBTQQIA+ organizations, like GLAAD or Pflag.
Global News’ Alyssa Julie explains what bisexual erasure is and how it can affect the mental health of those impacted.

Global Video: Raging Asian Women make themselves heard through traditional Taiko drumming
In celebration of Asian Heritage Month and Pride in Canada, a group of pan-Asian women and non-binary drummers called Raging Asian Women (RAW), are making themselves heard through the traditional performance of Japanese Taiko drumming, one of the few ensembles of its kind.
In Japanese, "taiko" literally means "drum," first used in ancient Japan over 2000 years ago. However the term has also come to refer to the wider art of traditional and modern Japanese drumming, with a mix of various technical rhythms, forms and instruments.
The origins of RAW lay in “trying to fight against stereotypes of Asian women as submissive or quiet or powerless,” said Jody Chan, one of the drummers of the group.
Y.J., another member of the group, said that “there’s still moments where I just feel a sense of pride and connection that I don’t think I feel anywhere else” when performing or rehearsing.
Asian Heritage Month recognizes the contributions and influence of Canadians from diverse Asian backgrounds to the nation’s history, culture, and achievements. Started in the 1990s, the Government of Canada officially designated the month of May for celebrations in 2002.
A recent survey released by the Chinese Canadian National Council Toronto Chapter (CCNC) and Project 1907 showed that reports of anti-Asian incidents last year saw a 47 per cent increase from 2020.

Global Video: Parosmia: The long COVID-19 symptom that distorts smell and taste
Parosmia is a post-COVID condition that distorts people's sense of smell, like for third-grade teacher Christine Chipinuck, who has been unable to eat in the staff cafeteria since her diagnosis.
It started a few months after recovering from COVID-19, when her toothpaste suddenly tasted rancid and her favourite drink coffee smelled like gasoline. Sometimes she smells hairspray or vomit all day. There are very few things she can eat.
There's still a lot to learn about this condition and how long it lasts, but the working theory is COVID-19 affects the receptors in the nose.

Global Video: What are “incidental COVID-19” cases and how do they affect hospitalizations?
As the Omicron COVID-19 variant continues to drive increased cases and hospital admissions in Canada, several jurisdictions have changed the way they report hospitalizations. They now separate between those who are admitted due to COVID-19 and those who are admitted for another reason but test positive during screening.
This is often being referred to as an "incidental COVID hospitalization" which means people in hospital with the disease are not necessarily there because of COVID-19.
But doctors say there is a lot more to an incidental case than someone testing positive despite coming in for something like a broken arm or a fall. Sean Previl breaks down what "incidental COVID" means and why medical professionals are saying the numbers don't tell the whole story.

Global Video: The Next Hubble: Why the James Webb space telescope could reshape our understanding of the universe
NASA’s $10-billion James Webb telescope – the successor to the famous Hubble Space telescope – is due to be launched into outer space this week.
Rather than operating in the visible light spectrum and ultraviolet, as Hubble did, it will be able to look at the Infrared slice of the light spectrum, allowing it to see objects previously hidden to the Hubble's gaze.
Astronomers say it will kick off a new era into the discoveries of the universe. Alyssa Julie explains why.
