Background:
GENEVA (28 June 2022) – The UN Committee on Migrant Workers (CMW) on Tuesday deplored the incidents that led to the deaths of at least 23 migrants as they tried to cross the border from Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Melilla last Friday.
It is yet to be determined whether the victims died falling from the fence, in a stampede, or as a result of any actions taken by the border control officers. The independent experts urged the two States to carry out immediate and thorough investigations and to hold those responsible to account. To avoid the repetition of such tragedies, the Committee also asked Morocco, Spain and the other EU States to expand the availability of pathways for safe and orderly migration, and take measures to guarantee and respect the right to seek and receive asylum. The Committee issued the following media statement:
“We are appalled by the deaths of these migrants who intended to cross the border to seek a better life based on their legitimate human rights.
We express our grave concern and deep sadness over this tragedy. We deplore the violations of the right to life, which is enshrined in the International Convention on Migrant Workers. Based on the information we have gathered, we remind all States that migrants shall not be subjected to any cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. States must also guarantee that all policies and practices at borders effectively respect all human rights obligations, ensuring the right to life, dignity, security and physical integrity of migrants in all circumstances.
We also regret that there are wounded migrants and security forces officers, while it remains unclear whether minors are among those injured.

We’re delighted to announce that the Secretary-General is appointing Ms. Najat Rochdi of Morocco as his Deputy Special Envoy for Syria.
She succeeds Khawla Matar of Bahrain to whom the Secretary-General expresses his gratitude for her efforts and dedication in the search for peace in Syria.
Ms. Rochdi brings over 20 years of experience in political affairs and international coordination in conflict and post-conflict areas, including through her latest assignment as Deputy Special Coordinator and Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, with the Office of the United Nations Special Coordinator in Lebanon.
EDUCATION PRE-SUMMIT
This morning, the Secretary-General addressed – via a pre-recorded video message - the Transforming Education Pre-Summit, being held in Paris.
He said that any solution to the world’s problems starts with education, the greatest tool we have to fulfil and grow human potential. However, he said that there is currently a crisis of equity, quality and relevance of education systems in many countries. He underscored that the Transforming Education Summit that will take place in September just ahead of the opening of the General Assembly must be a turning point – gathering Heads of State to lay out in crystal clear terms their promise and their plans to fundamentally transform education for the future and urged leaders to make full use of the pre-Summit to generate momentum and commitment so that there is a breakthrough for learners and societies.
SECURITY COUNCIL
The Head of our Peacekeeping Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Bintou Keita, briefed the Security Council this morning. She told Council members that ongoing M23 and other armed group activities in the country’s East threaten to reverse hard-won progress in security and stability in the DRC and the region.
Ms. Keita called on the Security Council to lend its full support to the region’s efforts to defuse the current diplomatic and security tensions. She also urged the DRC and Rwanda to seize the opportunity of the forthcoming Summit, to be hosted by President [João] Lourenço of Angola, to resolve their differences through dialogue.
Ms. Keita as a reminder, will speak to you at the Security stakeout after the Security Council is done with her.
CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC
Turning to the Central African Republic, where our peacekeepers there have launched a military operation against armed groups in Ouanda-Djallé, which is 175 km South of Birao. The Mission said that people in this area had been deeply impacted by the recent arrival of armed groups in their community. Many of them were forcibly displaced and were living in very precarious conditions.
Peacekeepers have managed to secure the city and operations are continuing today to allow displaced people to return to their homes. The Mission says they are conducting robust day and night patrols, as well as aerial surveillance missions.
Our colleagues reiterate their call on armed groups to immediately lay down their arms, to join the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration programmes and to refrain from any action that could harm the civilian population.

The leaders of the G7 group condemned the attack as "abominable".

Global Video: “I feel very isolated”: People with disabilities face barriers accessing LGBTQ+ spaces
Disability is a reality for many Canadians. Yet, people with disabilities often struggle to access businesses, nightclubs and other spaces.
This is true in the 2SLGBTQQIA+ community as well.
“I feel very isolated in a lot of those spaces because they’re not accessible,” disability awareness consultant Andrew Gurza tells Global News about hot spots in Toronto’s LGBTQ+ neighbourhood, “The Village.”
“And if I can access the space a lot of the community doesn’t know how to receive me. Has never seen a disabled person like me in the space.”
Global News’ Alyssa Julie spoke to two disabled people in the queer community, who said physical barriers aren’t the only hurdle they encounter. Global News’ Alyssa Julie reports.

Global Video: Bisexual erasure: What it is, and how it impacts mental health
Almost 500,000 people in Canada identify as bisexual, according to official data from Statistics Canada.
However, although a growing portion of the Canadian population identifies as bisexual, those who come out as such are still met with denial, or their identities are questioned. This phenomenon is referred to as bisexual erasure.
One example of this is when a bisexual person is said to be “experimenting,” or transitioning to gay or lesbian, as described by 2SLGBTQQIA+ organizations, like GLAAD or Pflag.
Global News’ Alyssa Julie explains what bisexual erasure is and how it can affect the mental health of those impacted.

Global Video: Raging Asian Women make themselves heard through traditional Taiko drumming
In celebration of Asian Heritage Month and Pride in Canada, a group of pan-Asian women and non-binary drummers called Raging Asian Women (RAW), are making themselves heard through the traditional performance of Japanese Taiko drumming, one of the few ensembles of its kind.
In Japanese, "taiko" literally means "drum," first used in ancient Japan over 2000 years ago. However the term has also come to refer to the wider art of traditional and modern Japanese drumming, with a mix of various technical rhythms, forms and instruments.
The origins of RAW lay in “trying to fight against stereotypes of Asian women as submissive or quiet or powerless,” said Jody Chan, one of the drummers of the group.
Y.J., another member of the group, said that “there’s still moments where I just feel a sense of pride and connection that I don’t think I feel anywhere else” when performing or rehearsing.
Asian Heritage Month recognizes the contributions and influence of Canadians from diverse Asian backgrounds to the nation’s history, culture, and achievements. Started in the 1990s, the Government of Canada officially designated the month of May for celebrations in 2002.
A recent survey released by the Chinese Canadian National Council Toronto Chapter (CCNC) and Project 1907 showed that reports of anti-Asian incidents last year saw a 47 per cent increase from 2020.

Global Video: Parosmia: The long COVID-19 symptom that distorts smell and taste
Parosmia is a post-COVID condition that distorts people's sense of smell, like for third-grade teacher Christine Chipinuck, who has been unable to eat in the staff cafeteria since her diagnosis.
It started a few months after recovering from COVID-19, when her toothpaste suddenly tasted rancid and her favourite drink coffee smelled like gasoline. Sometimes she smells hairspray or vomit all day. There are very few things she can eat.
There's still a lot to learn about this condition and how long it lasts, but the working theory is COVID-19 affects the receptors in the nose.

Global Video: What are “incidental COVID-19” cases and how do they affect hospitalizations?
As the Omicron COVID-19 variant continues to drive increased cases and hospital admissions in Canada, several jurisdictions have changed the way they report hospitalizations. They now separate between those who are admitted due to COVID-19 and those who are admitted for another reason but test positive during screening.
This is often being referred to as an "incidental COVID hospitalization" which means people in hospital with the disease are not necessarily there because of COVID-19.
But doctors say there is a lot more to an incidental case than someone testing positive despite coming in for something like a broken arm or a fall. Sean Previl breaks down what "incidental COVID" means and why medical professionals are saying the numbers don't tell the whole story.
