SECRETARY-GENERAL/TRAVEL
The Secretary-General is in Lviv, where he has met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The two were later joined by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for a trilateral meeting.
In his remarks to the press afterwards the Secretary-General reiterated that the United Nations will go on working in full solidarity with the Ukrainian people to mobilize all of our capacities and resources – alongside our national partners – to continue to provide humanitarian support to people in need, wherever it is required.
He also underscored that the positive momentum on the food front reflects a victory for diplomacy and for multilateralism. Getting food and fertilizer out of Ukraine and Russia in larger quantities is crucial to further calm commodity markets and lower prices, Mr. Guterres said. “It is essential to provide relief to the most vulnerable people and countries,” he added.
The Secretary-General said he had discussed the investigation of the tragic incident in a detention facility in Olenivka on 29 July. In relation to that, he announced that he intends to appoint General Carlos dos Santos Cruz of Brazil to lead a fact-finding mission. In order for the mission to work, he told the press, it needs to have the necessary assurances to guarantee secure access to the site and any other relevant locations. To put it simply, the Secretary-General said, a fact-finding mission must be free to find the facts.
The Secretary-General arrived in Lviv yesterday evening, and, earlier today, he briefly visited the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv. In speaking to reporters afterwards, the Secretary-General noted the links between the United Nations and the university, adding that today, the contributions of civil society and of academia are increasingly essential in the development of modern democracies.
UKRAINE
The UN, along with its humanitarian partners, yesterday delivered 60 tonnes of critical supplies in Zaporizka oblast to help meet the most immediate needs of nearly 6,000 people who remain in the Orikhiv settlement, only 6 kilometres from the front line.
The nine-truck humanitarian convoy brought food, water, hygiene kits, health supplies, shelter kits and relief items to help people stay warm in the cold season ahead.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) noted that this is the first convoy to reach this severely affected area since the war began.
Across Ukraine, aid workers have provided life-saving assistance to nearly 12 million people affected by the war since February. However, assistance remains limited in areas beyond the control of the Ukrainian Government.

Today, the Secretary-General arrived in Lviv where, tomorrow, he will join President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in a meeting hosted by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine, as we mentioned to you yesterday.
The Secretary-General will also go on to visit Odesa and then Istanbul in the following days.
MYANMAR
The Special Envoy of the Secretary-General on Myanmar, Noeleen Heyzer, met with State Administration Council (SAC) Chairman Senior General Min Aung Hlaing in Nay Pyi Taw today, in her first visit to Myanmar as Special Envoy. She discussed in person the pragmatic steps to de-escalate the violence, address the multidimensional crisis and advance unfettered humanitarian assistance free of discrimination to all people in need. Her visit follows her extensive consultations with actors from across the political spectrum, civil society and communities affected by the conflict.
In a statement, the Special Envoy said that her visit was to convey the concern of the United Nations and to propose concrete steps needed to reduce the conflict and suffering of the people. UN engagement does not in any way confer legitimacy, she added.
Ms. Heyzer stated that any progress in Myanmar depended on an end to the violence and visible and significant improvements in the lives of people on the ground. Following the recent death sentences carried out against pro-democracy activists that the United Nations has strongly condemned, the Special Envoy directly urged the Senior General to impose a moratorium on all future executions. She also reiterated the United Nations Secretary-General’s call for the release of all political prisoners.
The Special Envoy raised her request for a meeting with State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi following her latest sentencing. She added that she was deeply concerned about Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s health and well-being in her current situation and requests that she can return home soon. SRI LANKA
In Sri Lanka, the UN team, led by Resident Coordinator Hanaa Singer-Hamdy, signed today with authorities a new roadmap to advance the Sustainable Development Goals in the next five years—the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework. This aims to revitalize economic activities, also impacted by the pandemic and improve social services, decent employment, social cohesion, health and well-being for all people.
The UN team is also supporting Sri Lanka’s most immediate needs to prevent a humanitarian crisis, targeting 1.7 million people with health care and essential medicines.
In addition to the $38 million that our team has raised, the development framework further injects an estimated $60 million from the UN team’s core budget allocations – and we thank our Member States for this essential contribution – also bringing an additional $325 million through other resources in the next five years.

SECRETARY-GENERAL
At the invitation of President Volodymyr Zelinskyy of Ukraine, the Secretary-General will be in Lviv on Thursday to attend a trilateral meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkïye and the Ukrainian leader.
The Secretary-General will then go on to Odesa, where he will visit the port that is one of the three being used as part of the Black Sea Grain Initiative.
Before returning to New York over the weekend, the Secretary-General will be in Istanbul to visit the Joint Coordination Centre set up to implement the initiative. As you will all recall, this initiative is part of a deal that also includes the facilitation of Russian grain and fertilizer exports on to the global market.
BLACK SEA GRAIN INITIATIVE
Linked to that initiative, the first maritime shipment of Ukrainian wheat for humanitarian operations run by the UN World Food Programme left Ukraine today. It is another important milestone in efforts to get much needed Ukrainian grain out of the conflict-hit country, back into global markets, and to countries worst affected by the global food crisis.
The shipment of 23,000 metric tons of wheat will go to WFP’s humanitarian response in the Horn of Africa where the threat of famine stalks the drought-hit region. It is one of many areas around the world where the near complete halt of Ukrainian grain and food on global market has made life even harder for families already struggling with rising hunger.
According to the World Food Programme, a record 345 million people in 82 countries are now facing acute food insecurity while up to 50 million people in 45 countries are right on the edge of famine and risk being tipped over without humanitarian support. The World Food Programme notes that with commercial and humanitarian maritime traffic now resuming in and out of Ukraine’s Black Sea ports, some global supply disruptions will ease with relief for countries facing the worst of the global food crisis. Crucially, WFP says it will allow Ukraine to empty its grain storage silos ahead of the summer season harvest.
WFP said that despite these positive developments, the world still faces an unprecedented food crisis. They stress that immediate action is needed that brings together the humanitarian community, governments, and the private sector to save lives and invest in long term solutions.
KENYA
On Kenya, I just want to flag to you that a very short while ago the Secretary-General spoke by phone with William Ruto, and will try to speak with Raila Odinga tomorrow, based on Mr. Odinga’s own availability.
The Secretary-General expressed his admiration for the way the Kenyans conducted these elections and hopes the process is concluded soon within the existing constitutional and legal framework.

Global Video: Ballroom culture: World’s 1st Global Black Pride LGBTQ+ celebrations
The world’s first in-person Global Black Pride (GBP) events were held in Toronto, exactly one month after Pride and overlapping with the city’s Caribbean Carnival.
Founded in 2020, it is an event that brings together Black 2SLGBTQIA+ communities across all continents. One of these events was the Black Pride Kiki Ball, co-hosted by the City of Toronto with the Toronto Kiki Ballroom Alliance (TKBA).
In Canada, ballroom culture has exploded in recent years. Founded in 2010 in Toronto by Legendary Twysted Miyake-Mugler and Legendary Vixen, TKBA is a space to nurture the needs of 2SLGBTQIA+ BIPOC youth facing barriers and trauma.
Started in New York during the 1960s, ballroom spaces were created by the queer and trans Black and Latinx community due to discrimination and a need for a safer nightlife. A function that hosts multiple competitive categories, each event typically consists of a DJ, a commentator, a judges panel, ballroom walkers and spectators coming together to celebrate one another and compete.
For the world’s first in-person GBP event, this global event celebrated the unique intersection of these diverse cultures, marking how far the movement has come over the course of 60 years. Global Video: “I feel very isolated”: People with disabilities face barriers accessing LGBTQ+ spaces
Disability is a reality for many Canadians. Yet, people with disabilities often struggle to access businesses, nightclubs and other spaces.
This is true in the 2SLGBTQQIA+ community as well.
“I feel very isolated in a lot of those spaces because they’re not accessible,” disability awareness consultant Andrew Gurza tells Global News about hot spots in Toronto’s LGBTQ+ neighbourhood, “The Village.”
“And if I can access the space a lot of the community doesn’t know how to receive me. Has never seen a disabled person like me in the space.”
Global News’ Alyssa Julie spoke to two disabled people in the queer community, who said physical barriers aren’t the only hurdle they encounter. Global News’ Alyssa Julie reports.

Global Video: Bisexual erasure: What it is, and how it impacts mental health
Almost 500,000 people in Canada identify as bisexual, according to official data from Statistics Canada.
However, although a growing portion of the Canadian population identifies as bisexual, those who come out as such are still met with denial, or their identities are questioned. This phenomenon is referred to as bisexual erasure.
One example of this is when a bisexual person is said to be “experimenting,” or transitioning to gay or lesbian, as described by 2SLGBTQQIA+ organizations, like GLAAD or Pflag.
Global News’ Alyssa Julie explains what bisexual erasure is and how it can affect the mental health of those impacted.

Global Video: Raging Asian Women make themselves heard through traditional Taiko drumming
In celebration of Asian Heritage Month and Pride in Canada, a group of pan-Asian women and non-binary drummers called Raging Asian Women (RAW), are making themselves heard through the traditional performance of Japanese Taiko drumming, one of the few ensembles of its kind.
In Japanese, "taiko" literally means "drum," first used in ancient Japan over 2000 years ago. However the term has also come to refer to the wider art of traditional and modern Japanese drumming, with a mix of various technical rhythms, forms and instruments.
The origins of RAW lay in “trying to fight against stereotypes of Asian women as submissive or quiet or powerless,” said Jody Chan, one of the drummers of the group.
Y.J., another member of the group, said that “there’s still moments where I just feel a sense of pride and connection that I don’t think I feel anywhere else” when performing or rehearsing.
Asian Heritage Month recognizes the contributions and influence of Canadians from diverse Asian backgrounds to the nation’s history, culture, and achievements. Started in the 1990s, the Government of Canada officially designated the month of May for celebrations in 2002.
A recent survey released by the Chinese Canadian National Council Toronto Chapter (CCNC) and Project 1907 showed that reports of anti-Asian incidents last year saw a 47 per cent increase from 2020.

Global Video: Parosmia: The long COVID-19 symptom that distorts smell and taste
Parosmia is a post-COVID condition that distorts people's sense of smell, like for third-grade teacher Christine Chipinuck, who has been unable to eat in the staff cafeteria since her diagnosis.
It started a few months after recovering from COVID-19, when her toothpaste suddenly tasted rancid and her favourite drink coffee smelled like gasoline. Sometimes she smells hairspray or vomit all day. There are very few things she can eat.
There's still a lot to learn about this condition and how long it lasts, but the working theory is COVID-19 affects the receptors in the nose.
