United Nations Video: Setting Goals to Stop Destruction of Nature - United Nations Biodiversity Conference Opening #COP15
The UN’s key biodiversity conference, COP15, began on Tuesday in Montreal, Canada, where negotiators will set new targets and goals aimed at arresting the alarming destruction of nature, due by human activity.
The conference is being billed as a major biodiversity COP, because it is expected to lead to the adoption of a new Global Biodiversity Framework, guiding actions worldwide through 2030, to preserve and protect our natural resources.
The urgent need for action was underscored by UN Secretary-General António Guterres during his opening remarks to the conference on Tuesday.
Noting that “without nature, we are nothing”, Mr. Guterres declared that humanity has, for hundred of years “conducted a cacophony of chaos, played with instruments of destruction”.
The UN chief catalogued examples of this destruction, from deforestation and desertification; to the poisoning of the environment by chemicals and pesticides, which is degrading land, making it harder to feed the growing global population.
He pointed also to the degradation of the Ocean, which is accelerating the destruction of life-sustaining coral reefs and other marine ecosystems - directly affecting those communities that depend on the ocean for their livelihoods.

UKRAINE
Turning to Ukraine. Our humanitarian colleagues there telling us that the offices of at least two humanitarian non-governmental organizations were hit during attacks on the city of Donetsk, in the part of the country currently under Russian control. These incidents took place on the 5th and 6th of December, and one of the buildings was hit twice, on two consecutive days, that’s according to aid workers in Donetsk.
Our humanitarian colleagues note that the attacks not only damaged the facilities, normally used for aid distribution, but also the vehicles of the organizations which were parked there. Aid workers were on site and preparing packages of aid for distribution when the buildings were hit. There were no casualties inside the buildings, but outside the attacks resulted in the death of at least one civilian and left another injured.
Our colleagues stress that International Humanitarian Law is clear that attacks must never target civilians or civilian infrastructure and constant care must be taken to spare them.
YEMEN
The Director of the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), Ilene Cohn, concluded a week-long visit to Yemen, where she visited as you know Hudaydah, one of the most mine-affected governorates in Yemen.
At a press conference today, she reiterated the urgency of accelerating mine action efforts and stressed the responsibility of the authorities to protect the civilian population. She reiterated the calls by the UN Security Council last month for all possible precautions to be taken to protect the civilian population of Yemen from explosive ordnance, including identifying, marking, and clearing dangerous areas.
ROHINGYA REFUGEES
We want to echo here a call by our colleagues in Geneva, the UN Refugee Agency today is urging countries in the region of the Adaman Sea to immediately rescue and safely disembark a group of about 200 Rohingya refugees in distress, reported to be drifting in a vessel off the coast of Thailand.
Reports suggest the boat has been adrift since 1 December, after its engines broke down. Those on board have been without food and water for days and are suffering extreme dehydration.
UNHCR said that in line with international obligations under the Law of the Sea and longstanding maritime traditions, the duty to rescue persons in distress at sea should be upheld, irrespective of nationality or legal status.

Secretary-General António Guterres on Tuesday denounced the existing global financial system as “morally bankrupt” and called on youth leaders gathered for a UN summit in Montreal, Canada, to push for justice so that all countries, especially in the developing world, have the tools needed to curb biodiversity loss and restore the balance between humans and nature.
“Beyond biodiversity, beyond climate, there is a central question in the world today and that is justice. We live in a system in which both the economic rules and the financial architecture are morally bankrupt,” the UN chief told a side event organized by the Global Youth Biodiversity Network and other youth groups, ahead of the official opening of COP15, the latest edition of the UN Biodiversity Conference.
This COP, the Fifteenth Conference of Parties to the UN Convention on Biodiversity (CBD), runs through 19 December and is expected to see the adoption of a post-2020 roadmap for the conservation, protection, restoration and sustainable management of biodiversity and ecosystems for the next decade.
“Your leadership [in tackling], the war against nature” the Secretary-General told the youth representatives, “is the best signal of hope that this battle is worth fighting and that we have a chance to win. The youth are on the frontline of the battle to rescue humankind... mobilizing even when governments are reluctant to take the situation seriously.”
The world’s young people are making civil society and the business community understand that this is the moment to reverse course, he stated, adding: “This is the moment to make peace with nature. This is the moment to consider that biodiversity and climate are the two defining issues of our time and these are two battles we cannot afford to lose.”

Our revelations centre on the West Midlands Ambulance Service where this year so far 37 patients have died after an ambulance was delayed in getting to them.
In the whole of 2020, only one person died before the ambulance turned up after a delay.
Darren Childs waited 47 minutes for an ambulance when his one-year-old daughter had a seizure, far beyond the 7 minute response target for such a life or death call. He fears ‘we are losing the NHS’ and that this winter’s pressures will ‘topple’ it.

Global Video: Breast cancer survivors say issues like early menopause, loss of identity often overlooked
Just days ahead of her 40th birthday, Hilary Boswell received a terrifying diagnosis – She had breast cancer.
She received a unilateral mastectomy, a surgery she didn’t necessarily want but felt pressured into by her surgeon. It left her with one breast and, she says, it changed the way she saw herself.
“I remember struggling so much with the idea of walking around with one boob,” she said. “I just really felt like I knew what I wanted… and yeah, I wish I had done it, “ she added, referring to a double mastectomy.
Like Boswell, other cancer survivors sometimes struggle to accept the changes brought on by surgery or chemotherapy – such as early menopause, or loss of libido. And they don’t always get the support they need.
As Alyssa Julie reports in our series Against all Odds, some survivors and experts are asking health professionals to shed more light on the impact of a cancer diagnosis on the body and the mind.

Global Video: Outside the margins: BIPOC and LGBTQ2 breast cancer patients rewrite the narrative
People from racialized and 2SLGBTQQIA+ communities are underrepresented in the institution of cancer care, and they’re slipping through the cracks because of it.
“I really felt like my issues didn’t matter. And I didn’t feel confident in making a decision about a life-changing surgery because I didn’t see myself represented,” said Michelle Audoin, the founder of Uncovered: A Breast Recognition Project. “The fact that I didn’t see myself in this space and my questions weren’t being addressed, it led to depression.”
For breast cancer, a reproductive cancer, the disparity can be especially apparent for the latter group. One thing is clear: it’s time to rewrite the narrative of what a typical cancer survivor looks like.
To do so, members of the community across Canada are fighting against these gaps, from diversifying what breast cancer looks like to writing a graphic memoir.

Global Video: "It's part of everybody's history": CNE's post-pandemic return revives multi-generational traditions
The Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) is back in Toronto after a two-year pandemic hiatus, and with its return, small businesses that struggled with the closure are back.
With revenue going from 100 to 0 when the Exhibition closed for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, being back at the CNE this year is extra-special for patrons and especially the small family businesses passed down from generation to generation.
“As much as this is a generational business for me and a family business, it’s also something that is an experience that generations have gone to the CNE and enjoyed,” said Sam Scanga, owner of several food booths at the CNE he runs with his family, referring to attendees’ love of his Primo Spaghetti 1.99. "It's part of everybody's history."

Global Video: Are labour unions making a comeback in North America?
Throughout the pandemic, North Americans have been rethinking their relationship with work. In fact, a recently released survey found that about a quarter of Canadians have taken on a new job in the past few months.
Many more who have stayed at their post have begun thinking about ways to improve working conditions.
And then there's workers at places like Starbucks and Apple, some of whom have sought to form unions or join unions. In Canada, three Starbucks in B.C. have voted to join the United Steelworkers Union, as has a café in Calgary. Five Lethbridge Starbucks locations are awaiting the results of similar votes.
Meanwhile, unions have reported an increase in the number of calls from workers interested in joining a union, according to Canadian Labour Congress President Bea Bruske.
“Those workers who are often service sector workers in restaurants, retail locations, have had to deal with the public, have not necessarily had access to personal protective equipment during the pandemic, have not had access to paid sick time. And quite frankly, their wages are not keeping up to inflation,” She explains.
Alyssa Julie explains what’s behind workers’ renewed push to unionize their workplaces and whether it’s likely to lead to a stronger labour movement.
