United Nations Video: Holocaust, Security Council, Haiti & Other topics - Daily Press Briefing

HOLOCAUST This morning, the Secretary-General paid tribute to Holocaust survivors at the General Assembly ceremony in memory of the victims of the Holocaust. He said that the rise of National Socialism in Germany 90 years ago was made possible by the indifference – if not connivance – of so many millions of people. Today, he warned, we can hear echoes of those same siren songs of hate. The Secretary-General said that the painful truth is that antisemitism is everywhere. In fact, it is increasing in intensity, with survey after survey showing antisemitism at record highs. And what is true for antisemitism is true for other forms of hate, Mr. Guterres added. He also said that he is issuing an urgent appeal to everyone with influence across the information ecosystem: to stop the hate. Set up guardrails. And enforce them. Many parts of the Internet are becoming toxic waste dumps for hate and vicious lies, he said. SECURITY COUNCIL This morning, El-Ghassim Wane, the head of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) briefed the Security Council. He discussed security in the country, the Mission’s ability to contribute to the improvement of the situation, as well as Mali’s critical year on the road back to constitutional order. This afternoon, at 3:00 p.m., the Security Council will hold consultations on Afghanistan. Council members will hear from Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, and the Assistant Secretary-General Khaled Khiari on the trip they undertook last week with the head of UN Women, Sima Bahous, to Afghanistan and a number of other countries. After that, the Council will hold consultations on the situation in the Middle East, including the question of Palestine. Council members will receive an update from the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Tor Wennesland. DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO The UN condemns the new military offensive by the M23 rebel group in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and reiterates its call on the armed group to cease all hostilities and to withdraw from the occupied areas, in accordance with the decisions made at the mini-summit held in Luanda. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) today noted that, according to initial reports from partners, some 90,000 people have been displaced by the clashes between Congolese forces and the M23 in and around Kitchanga, in North Kivu. Many of those displaced are seeking refuge in nearby Mweso, in schools, churches and with host families. As more displaced people arrive in Mweso, humanitarian organizations are concerned about the spread of cholera there, following last month’s outbreak. The clashes have also impeded road access, making it very difficult to deliver humanitarian aid. The UN peacekeeping Mission in the country is continuing to provide physical security and immediate assistance. That includes shelter, water and medical care, to about 500 Congolese civilians who are currently in and outside the UN base in Kitchanga. The UN also reiterates the Secretary-General's call on all armed groups to lay down their weapons and join the national Disarmament, Demobilization, Community Recovery and Stabilization programme. HAITI The UN team in Haiti has strongly condemned the targeted and deliberate attacks by members of armed gangs who have resulted in the deaths of several police officers on duty. The UN offers its condolences to the bereaved families and to the Haitian national police, and also calls on the authorities to do everything possible to identify the perpetrators of these heinous crimes and to prosecute them. The United Nations Holocaust memorial ceremony will be held on 27 January 2023 in the United Nations General Assembly Hall, under the theme "Home and Belonging". --- The ceremony will include remarks by the United Nations Secretary-General, the President of the General Assembly and the Permanent Representatives of Israel and the United States. Professor Debórah Dwork, Holocaust scholar and educator, will deliver the keynote address. Holocaust survivor Mr. Jacques Grishaver, and Dr. Ethel Brooks, Romani scholar will speak. Dr. Karen Frostig will share her experience as the granddaughter of Holocaust victims. Musicians Ms. Shoshanna Shattenkirk, Professor Renee Jolles, Mr. Michael Shaham (grandson of Holocaust survivors) will perform. Cantor Nissim Saal will recite memorial prayers.  The United Nations Holocaust Memorial Ceremony marking the 2023 International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust is organized by the United Nations Department of Global Communications. The theme “Home and Belonging” highlights the humanity of the Holocaust victims and survivors, who had their home and sense of belonging ripped from them by the perpetrators of the Holocaust. The violence of exclusion began with disinformation and hate speech that lent support to systemic injustice and discrimination, and marginalization and ended with genocidal killing. The theme reminds us of our responsibility to respond with humanity to the victims of atrocity crimes, to counter hate speech, antisemitism, Holocaust distortion and denial, and prejudice – to do all we can to prevent genocide. United Nations Video: UN Chief on International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust

Related Videos On: UN Chief on International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust

Video message by António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General, on International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust (27 January 2023). Today, we honor the memory of the victims of the Holocaust. We remember the six million Jewish children, women, and men, as well as the Roma and Sinti, the people with disabilities, and countless others who perished. We reflect on the millions of individual lives cut short; the millions of futures stolen away. As we mourn the loss of so many and so much, we also recognize that the Holocaust was not inevitable. No genocide ever is. It was the culmination of millennia of antisemitic hate. The Nazis could only move with calculated cruelty from the discrimination of Europe’s Jews to their annihilation because so few stood up, and so many stood by. It was the deafening silence – both at home and abroad – that emboldened them. The alarm bells were ringing from the very beginning. Hate speech and disinformation. Contempt for human rights and the rule of law. The glorification of violence and tales of racial supremacy. Disdain for democracy and diversity. In remembering the Holocaust, we recognize threats to freedom, dignity, and humanity – including in our own time. Today – in the face of growing economic discontent and political instability, escalating white supremacist terrorism, and surging hate and religious bigotry – we must be more outspoken than ever. We must never forget – nor allow others to ever forget, distort or deny the Holocaust. Today and every day, let us resolve to never again remain silent in the face of evil – and to always defend the dignity and rights of all. Thank you.

Noon briefing by Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General. Highlights: - Security Council - Sudan - Middle East - Occupied Palestinian Territory - Peru - Colombia - Haiti - Brazil/Yanomami - Ukraine - Democratic Republic of the Congo - Niger - Myanmar - Myanmar Humanitarian - UNOPS - Senior Personnel Appointment - Honour Roll SECURITY COUNCIL The Security Council had an open debate today on the theme of investing in people to enhance resilience against complex challenges. The Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, said that rethinking our efforts towards achieving sustainable peace is an absolute necessity. There is only one route to durable peace, and it is the route of sustainable development, she added. It is also humanity’s ultimate prevention tool that can break through cycles of instability to address the underlying drivers of fragility and humanitarian need. Ms. Mohammed urged Council members to keep in mind that the success of our efforts to advance sustainable peace will depend on adequate investment in peacebuilding. SUDAN Yesterday afternoon, the Security Council met on Sudan. Karim Khan, the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, presented his latest report on the situation in Darfur. MIDDLE EAST Tor Wennesland, the Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, said in a statement earlier today that he was deeply alarmed and saddened by the continuing cycle of violence in the occupied West Bank. The deaths of Palestinians, during an Israeli arrest operation in Jenin, is another stark example, he said. Since the beginning of this year, Mr. Wennesland said, we are continuing to witness high levels of violence and other negative trends that characterized 2022. It is crucial to reduce tensions immediately and prevent more loss of life. He urges, and remains actively engaged with, Israeli and Palestinian authorities to try to de-escalate the current tensions, restore calm, and avoid further conflict. Global Video: Mummering: Newfoundland's unique holiday tradition comes roaring back

Related Videos On: Mummering: Newfoundland's unique holiday tradition comes roaring back

This past weekend in St. John’s Newfoundland, hundreds of people hit the streets for the Atlantic province’s annual Mummers Parade. As part of this festive tradition, people gather up old clothes that have been lying around the house –tablecloths and oversized shirts are a favourite – and assemble a “mummer’s rig” or costume. Originally, mummering was a house-visiting tradition. It first appeared in Newfoundland and Labrador in the 1800’s, though the practice dates back much further than that. Mummers would visit their neighbours in disguise, looking for beer and a bite to eat. Alyssa Julie has more on the history of mummering - and the dark parts of its past. Global Video: Breast cancer survivors say issues like early menopause, loss of identity often overlooked

Just days ahead of her 40th birthday, Hilary Boswell received a terrifying diagnosis – She had breast cancer. She received a unilateral mastectomy, a surgery she didn’t necessarily want but felt pressured into by her surgeon. It left her with one breast and, she says, it changed the way she saw herself. “I remember struggling so much with the idea of walking around with one boob,” she said. “I just really felt like I knew what I wanted… and yeah, I wish I had done it, “ she added, referring to a double mastectomy. Like Boswell, other cancer survivors sometimes struggle to accept the changes brought on by surgery or chemotherapy – such as early menopause, or loss of libido. And they don’t always get the support they need. As Alyssa Julie reports in our series Against all Odds, some survivors and experts are asking health professionals to shed more light on the impact of a cancer diagnosis on the body and the mind. - With files from Michelle Butterfield. Global Video: Outside the margins: BIPOC and LGBTQ2 breast cancer patients rewrite the narrative

People from racialized and 2SLGBTQQIA+ communities are underrepresented in the institution of cancer care, and they’re slipping through the cracks because of it. “I really felt like my issues didn’t matter. And I didn’t feel confident in making a decision about a life-changing surgery because I didn’t see myself represented,” said Michelle Audoin, the founder of Uncovered: A Breast Recognition Project. “The fact that I didn’t see myself in this space and my questions weren’t being addressed, it led to depression.” For breast cancer, a reproductive cancer, the disparity can be especially apparent for the latter group. One thing is clear: it’s time to rewrite the narrative of what a typical cancer survivor looks like. To do so, members of the community across Canada are fighting against these gaps, from diversifying what breast cancer looks like to writing a graphic memoir. Global's Katherine Cheng has more. The Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) is back in Toronto after a two-year pandemic hiatus, and with its return, small businesses that struggled with the closure are back. With revenue going from 100 to 0 when the Exhibition closed for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, being back at the CNE this year is extra-special for patrons and especially the small family businesses passed down from generation to generation. “As much as this is a generational business for me and a family business, it’s also something that is an experience that generations have gone to the CNE and enjoyed,” said Sam Scanga, owner of several food booths at the CNE he runs with his family, referring to attendees’ love of his Primo Spaghetti 1.99. "It's part of everybody's history." Global's Alexia Kapralos and Katherine Cheng have some of their stories.
