The Minister for Foreign Affairs of Pakistan, Jalil Abbas Jilani, said, “We would like to have peace with India, but at the same time it will be contingent upon the resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with the UN Security Council resolutions.” Speaking to journalists on Friday (22 Sep) on the margins of the High-level week of the General Assembly, Jilani added, “It is because of this factor and the kinds of steps which India had taken on 5th August 2019, to further deny the Kashmiris their rights, including the attempt by being made by the Indian side to change the demographics of Jammu and Kashmir, that is something that is of great concern, not only to Pakistan but also people of Jammu and Kashmir.” The Minister said this “is certainly an issue of great importance”, concluding, “That's the core dispute between India and Pakistan. It is because of this issue that we have had tensions, conflicts and wars between our two countries.”

Earlier today, five trucks carrying humanitarian aid provided by the International Organization for Migration passed through Bab Al-Hawa border crossing from southern Türkiye. Another six trucks used the Bab Al-Salam border crossing also with IOM supplies. Since the resumption of operations through Bab al-Hawa that took place on Tuesday as you’ll recall, 49 trucks carrying humanitarian assistance provided by UN agencies arrived in Idlib through this crossing. Additional truck movements and missions by UN personnel are planned in the coming days. The UN cross-border operation remains a lifeline to people in north-west Syria. Each month, we and our partners reach an average of 2.6 million people with critical assistance and protection services. So far this year, more than 4,000 trucks with aid from the United Nations have crossed from Türkiye into north-west Syria using the Bab Al-Hawa, Bab Al-Salam and Al Ra’ae border crossings. NIGER From Niger, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs tells us, or they’re warning us rather, are warning all of us, about access constraints in the Tillabéri region of Niger, that’s in the western part of the country, where thousands of displaced people need humanitarian assistance. The area hosts over 150,000 displaced men, women and children who have fled violence. Some progress has been made after discussions with de facto authorities, but our humanitarian colleagues say they are still experiencing delays and difficulties as they are concerned this could further aggravate the situation of many, many vulnerable households. CLIMATE And also this year, you will have seen deadly floods all over the world, proving that while water is the key to life, it can also kill. For this reason, the World Meteorological Organization, the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction and their partners today announced a new collaboration to help communities understand and act on water-related risks before they become disasters. The programme is focused on supporting the countries of Ethiopia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Uganda, which all are linked by which river? The Nile. Kim Jong Un’s trip to Russia to meet Vladimir Putin has been turned into a propaganda film. North Korean TV released the 90 minute documentary on Wednesday, a few days after Kim Jong Un returned from Russia. The North Korean leader appeared greatly entertained by a walrus doing sit-ups. There were also many shots of the dictator’s famed armoured train, which is rumoured to be bomb proof, without sacrificing luxury touches on the inside. The film also showed the moment Putin invited Jong Un to take a seat in his armoured car. Parts of the car are blurred, likely for security reasons. Donald Trump famously tried to show Kim Jong Un the inside of ‘The Beast’ in 2018, but Secret Service agents thought it wasn’t such a great idea, and ushered everyone away. Kim Jong Un’s ‘notepad guy’ was seen writing the dictator’s every word down, as he inspected military equipment, the official’s job is to follow the ‘Supreme Leader’ around to make sure all his ‘wise thoughts’ recorded verbatim. The film also featured Kim Jong Un and Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu swapping gifts, including a hat and a sword. Punishing winds, a severe drought and invasive grass created the perfect conditions for the devastating fires on Maui that have so far killed at least 67 people, experts say. The exact cause of the fires is yet to be determined but the National Weather Service had issued warnings for high winds and dry weather as Hurricane Dora brushed south of Hawaii. Craig Clements, a meteorology professor at San Jose State University, said Maui had already been in a severe drought, putting it at risk for fires. He said the steep mountains overlooking the hard-hit town of Lahain also exacerbated the high wind conditions, sending them into populated areas at high speed. This past weekend in St. John’s Newfoundland, hundreds of people hit the streets for the Atlantic province’s annual Mummers Parade. As part of this festive tradition, people gather up old clothes that have been lying around the house –tablecloths and oversized shirts are a favourite – and assemble a “mummer’s rig” or costume. Originally, mummering was a house-visiting tradition. It first appeared in Newfoundland and Labrador in the 1800’s, though the practice dates back much further than that. Mummers would visit their neighbours in disguise, looking for beer and a bite to eat. Alyssa Julie has more on the history of mummering - and the dark parts of its past.
