Secretary-General António Guterres today (27 Sep) asked, “how much suffering the world – particularly the most vulnerable countries like Pakistan – will endure before emissions are cut.” Speaking at an informal briefing marking one year since the devastating floods in Pakistan, the Secretary-General said, “I visited some of the affected areas that September. I will never forget the climate-related carnage I saw. Lives, homes, livelihoods, schools, hospitals – all obliterated.” He said, “while much of the water has receded, the needs have not. More than eight million people in flood-affected areas lack access to clean water. Millions depend on humanitarian aid. And more than two million homes, 30,000 schools and 2,000 health facilities were damaged or destroyed – and reconstruction has just begun.” Guterres said, “fossil fuel-based energy systems are a political decision. And those decisions must change. The science is clear; the shift to renewables is imperative.” He said, “my Acceleration Agenda and Climate Solidarity Pact show the way forward. And COP28 must see concrete action on both.” The Secretary-General called on donors and the international financial institutions to make good on the commitments that they made at the Conference that he co-hosted back in January.

She said the images of people leaving due to fear of identity-based violence are very alarming, indeed. She called on all efforts to be made to ensure the protection and human rights of the ethnic Armenian population who remain in the area and for those who have left. She stressed that protection and equal rights of minorities is a cornerstone of international human rights law and must be ensured. On Sunday, rocks plucked from the asteroid 101955 Bennu will land on our planet, ready to be studied by scientists who hope this sample can shine a light on our planet – and how it came to be. The sample comes to us seven years after NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft launched from Cape Canaveral, Fla. on a mission to study a near-Earth asteroid and three years after it successfully touched down on Bennu to collect a sample of an asteroid for the first time in the space agency’s history. Bennu is described as a celestial “rubbish pile” that is made up of material dating back billions of years to when the solar system was forming. And as Alyssa Julie reports, scientists believe its rocks could hold a record of that time period. Punishing winds, a severe drought and invasive grass created the perfect conditions for the devastating fires on Maui that have so far killed at least 67 people, experts say. The exact cause of the fires is yet to be determined but the National Weather Service had issued warnings for high winds and dry weather as Hurricane Dora brushed south of Hawaii. Craig Clements, a meteorology professor at San Jose State University, said Maui had already been in a severe drought, putting it at risk for fires. He said the steep mountains overlooking the hard-hit town of Lahain also exacerbated the high wind conditions, sending them into populated areas at high speed.
