Message by Martin Griffiths, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), on the impact of the war and mine crisis in Ukraine. Ukraine's vast agricultural land faces extensive contamination, threatening its economic sustainability and raising concerns of a food crisis by disrupting the food supply chain. Ukraine is now among the most heavily mine-contaminated countries globally, with an estimated one-third of its territory suspected to have some form of contamination. The ongoing war has damaged Ukraine's agriculture and food production, increasing production costs. The "Humanitarian Demining in Ukraine and its Consequences for Food Security" meeting, co-convened by Italy and Ukraine, aimed to tackle the urgent issue of mine contamination in Ukraine due to ongoing conflicts. The objectives were to outline Ukraine's demining needs, emphasize the severity of mine contamination, and advocate for a comprehensive mine action plan covering funding, equipment, and training. Additionally, the meeting provided insights into effective demining strategies and showcased the latest developments in Ukraine's Mine Action Response, highlighting the crucial connection between demining efforts and food security by addressing the impact of mines on agricultural productivity.

Donald Trump has said he supports the availability of IVF treatment, joining a growing number of Republicans who are seeking to distance themselves from an Alabama court ruling on the issue. The state's top court ruled last week that frozen embryos have the same rights as children and people can be held liable for destroying them. At least three clinics paused IVF treatment in the wake of the ruling. On Friday, Mr Trump called on Alabama to find "an immediate solution". A fire that destroyed two residential buildings in the eastern Spanish city of Valencia, killing four people, has led to speculation about how the fire spread so rapidly. #Valencia Mayor María José Catalá said that both the danger of the 14-story building collapsing and the continuing intense heat from the fire had initially prevented emergency workers from getting in to search for possible survivors. Experts suggested that a type of cladding might have made the fire spread faster, but the mayor said it was too early to tell how it began and spread. Play Video: A Look Inside One of Ecuador's Most Infamous Gang Prisons

This is what Ecuador’s prisons used to look like, and this is how they look now. Or at least that’s the message the government wants to convey by opening up this prison to journalists after it ‘declared war’ on gangs. The Cotopaxi ‘mega prison’, around 50 miles away from Ecuador’s capital Quito, holds more than 4,000 inmates. They hope to prove that they have taken back control of the unruly prisons where armed gang members once roamed freely. Journalists were shown hidden tunnels dug by the prisoners, and holes in the walls used to hide contraband. Ecuador has struggled to contain gang violence in recent years, with gang members even storming a TV station in January. Drug smugglers and cartels from Colombia and Mexico have been exporting cocaine from Ecuador’s large international ports. These latest raids may have brought some prisons under control for now, but there’s no guarantee this will last. The military has launched similar raids in the past, but violence and chaos quickly returned after the soldiers left. #ecuador #cartel #mexico Subscribe here: http://bit.ly/ODNsubs TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@ondemandnews Twitter: https://twitter.com/ODN Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ODN/ If you wish to purchase any of our clips for commercial use, please visit: http://www.itnproductions.co.uk/news/

There was anger and confusion in the House of Commons on Wednesday as British MPs voted on whether to back an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.  There were mass walkouts, and calls for the Speaker of the House of Commons to resign, but what caused the controversy? The Scottish National Party (SNP) called a motion demanding a ceasefire. But the Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, caused outrage when he permitted the Labour Party to table an amendment to the motion, breaking Parliamentary convention. All three parties have accused each other of playing politics over the issue. Meanwhile, in Gaza, the war rages on, and by some estimates the Palestinian death toll will soon reach the grim milestone of 30,000 people.
