Secretary-General António Guterres today launched a set of United Nations Global Principles for Information Integrity that calls for “an information environment that champions human rights and a sustainable future.” Speaking one year after the launch of his report into information integrity on digital platforms, the Secretary-General put forward a framework for coordinated international action to make information spaces safer and more humane, one of the most urgent tasks of our time. Misinformation, disinformation, hate speech and other risks to the information ecosystem are fueling conflict, threatening democracy and human rights, and undermining public health and climate action. Their proliferation is now being supercharged by the rapid rise of readily available Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, increasing the threat to groups often targeted in information spaces, including children. Speaking to reporters today (24 Jun) in New York, Guterres said that the five five principles – societal trust and resilience; independent, free, and pluralistic media; healthy incentives; transparency and research; and public empowerment – are based on an overriding vision of a more humane information ecosystem. “They provide a solid foundation for sustainable, inclusive development, climate action, democracy, and peace,” he emphasized. Guterres explained that the United Nations Global Principles for Information Integrity are the result of broad consultations with Member States, youth leaders, academia, civil society, the private sector including tech companies, and the media. Those consultations showed that much of the world shares our deep concern and is searching for solutions, he said. The Secretary-General reiterated, “ The Global Principles lay out a clear path forward, firmly rooted in human rights, including the rights to freedom of expression and opinion.” He urged governments, the tech sector, and other stakeholders to “listen to your people and your customers – and respond.” Guterres said that he has a clear message - demand action. “To the big tech companies - take responsibility,” the UN chief went on by saying that “acknowledge the damage your products are inflicting on people and communities. You have the power to mitigate harm to people and societies around the world. You have the power to change business models that profit from disinformation and hate.” To advertisers and the PR industry, Guterres told them to “stop monetizing harmful content.” He continued, “Strengthen information integrity; protect your brand; boost your bottom line. The climate crisis is a cause of particular concern. Coordinated disinformation campaigns are seeking to undermine climate action.” “Creatives - don’t use your talents to greenwash. PR agencies – look for clients who aren’t misleading people and destroying our planet,” the UN chief added. In his message to media outlets, Guterres said, “Raise and enforce editorial standards. Do your part to safeguard our future by providing quality journalism based on facts and reality. Find advertisers who are part of the solution, not the problem.” To governments, the UN chief urges them to “commit to creating and maintaining a free, viable, independent, and plural media landscape. Guarantee strong protections for journalists. Ensure regulations uphold human rights. Refrain from drastic measures, including blanket internet shutdowns. Respect the right to freedom of opinion and expression.” The United Nations Global Principles for Information Integrity stem from a proposal in Our Common Agenda, the Secretary-General’s 2021 report that outlines a vision for future global cooperation and multilateral action. The Principles provide a resource for Member States ahead of September’s Summit of the Future.

Thousands of people across the Southeast Asian country were reportedly killed during the so-called war on drugs which was promoted by the last administration. Michael John Maestro, a registered nurse who works on drug-abuse prevention with support from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), is advancing this more compassionate approach with meaningful results.

Hybrid press conference by Cassie Flynn, UNDP Global Director Climate Change and Stephen Fisher, Professor of Political Sociology, University of Oxford. They launch the second edition of the People's Climate Vote (PCV) - the largest ever poll of public opinion on global climate action. __________________________________________________ UN Development Programme (UNDP) Global Director for Climate Change Cassie Flynn said, “People are unafraid of bold climate policies.” Launching today (20 Jun) the second edition of the People’s Climate Vote (PCV) - the largest ever poll of public opinion on global climate action, Flynn said, “Out of this survey, the message is clear: There's a huge majority - 80 percent - of people want countries to strengthen their commitment on the climate crisis. And what is increasingly striking about this is that in a moment where we are seeing and experiencing increased polarization, increased divisions over issues like trade and security, that over 86 percent of people say they want countries to put aside their differences and collaborate on climate crisis.” The Peoples’ Climate Vote is the world’s largest standalone public opinion survey on climate change. It serves as a platform for people to express their concerns and needs on climate change to world leaders. This initiative, carried out by UNDP and the University of Oxford, was launched in 2021 with a first poll that surveyed people across 50 countries through adverts in popular mobile gaming apps. The 2024 survey is bigger in terms of scope: 77 countries, representing 87 percent of the world’s population, were asked their views on climate change. UNDP Global Director for Climate Change said, “It's very clear that people all over the world, in every single country, are living the climate crisis. Globally, over half of people said they think about the climate crisis either daily or weekly. And two thirds said that they incorporate decisions around their lives, where they live, where they work, by taking into account the climate crisis.” She continued, “People are unafraid of bold climate policies. 72 percent of people globally said that they want to see the transition away from fossil fuels as quickly as possible, and this includes populations of the 10 biggest producers of coal, oil and gas.” She concluded, “Our goal, again, is to really bring the voice of people to this debate, to be able to show world leaders that people are unified even when they may have differences on many things around the world. And we're on the cusp of some of these major decisions on climate crisis at the Global at the national, regional and sub national levels. And it's important at this moment that leaders do listen to this unified message.”

A boy with severe epilepsy has become the first patient in the world to trial a new device fitted in their skull to control seizures. The neurostimulator, which sends electrical signals deep into his brain, has reduced Oran Knowlson’s daytime seizures by 80%. The surgery was carried out in October as part of a trial at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London when Oran - who is now 13 - was 12. Epilepsy seizures are triggered by abnormal bursts of electrical activity in the brain. The device, which emits a constant pulse of current, aims to block or disrupt the abnormal signals. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said the "intense phase” of fighting Hamas in Gaza is nearly over, allowing forces to move to the northern border with Lebanon to confront Hezbollah.   Netanyahu said he expected the ground operation in the southern Gaza city of Rafah to be completed soon. But he said that “doesn’t mean the war is about to end”, with action continuing until Hamas was completely driven from power.   Hezbollah has been launching missiles, rockets and drones into northern Israel in support of Hamas since the day after the 7 October attacks in southern Israel, when gunmen from Gaza killed about 1,200 people and took 251 others as hostages.   More than 37,620 people have been killed in Gaza during the military campaign that Israel launched in response, according to the Palestinian territory's Hamas-run health ministry. But a mob dragged him out of the police station, before killing him and burning his body. The police station and several vehicles were also damaged in the violence. Pakistan has strict blasphemy laws, and some of those accused face the death penalty. While the state has never executed anyone accused of blasphemy, dozens of people have been killed by mob violence and extra-judicial killings in the past few decades. Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned South Korea that sending arms to Ukraine would be “a big mistake”. On Thursday South Korea said it was considering exporting arms to Ukraine in response to Russia and North Korea’s new military pact. Putin made the statement shortly after he left North Korea, where he met with Kim Jong Un. It was Putin’s first visit to the country in 24 years. North Korea has become a key supplier of artillery shells in Russia’s war with Ukraine. The carefully choreographed visit culminated in the signing of a defensive military pact. South Korea had previously refused to provide lethal weapons to Ukraine, and instead sent humanitarian and medical supplies. But the new North Korean-Russian pact has caused South Korea to reconsider this policy. Putin said Russia would make “decisions which are unlikely to please the current leadership of South Korea" if they started supplying arms to Ukraine. #ukraine #putin #korea Subscribe here: http://bit.ly/ODNsubs TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@ondemandnews Twitter: https://twitter.com/ODN Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ODN/ If you wish to purchase any of our clips for commercial use, please visit: http://www.itnproductions.co.uk/news/

Play Video: Over 1000 pilgrims reported dead during hajj in Saudi Arabia

Now more than a thousand people are reported to have died during this year's hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia - in scorching temperatures which rose above 50 degrees celsius. Around 1.8 million people have taken part in this year's hajj, most of them from abroad. Officials had advised pilgrims to take precautions against the suffocating heatwave, and avoid going outside without an umbrella. But it seems hundreds of those who died were not formally registered and could not access the cooling tents. A warning, our report contains distressing images.
