Occupied Palestinian Territory
I’ll start off with Gaza, and our colleagues from the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs tell us that, today, the Humanitarian Coordinator for the Occupied Palestinian Territory, Muhannad Hadi, is in Gaza, where he began a two-day visit. In Gaza city, he visited a UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) school that is sheltering hundreds of families, most of whom are among those newly displaced from North Gaza Governorate. Mr. Hadi just briefed the Secretary-General on his visit from Gaza and he gave a very harrowing description. He said the at the Al Moumanya school as unbearable, where families lack food, water and functioning toilets and are crammed into very much overcrowded facilities. Mr. Hadi said that sewage is running everywhere, and waste is everywhere. “This is not a place for humans to survive. This is beyond imagination,” he said. Later in the day, Mr. Hadi visited a waste collection point, where our humanitarian partners are working to dispose of trash from communities to prevent health and environmental hazards.
The Humanitarian Coordinator reiterated his call for an end to the war and the horror it has caused – and stressed there is an urgent need for an environment that enables aid operations in Gaza. Mr. Hadi also visited two temporary learning spaces that are supporting students with hearing loss. As the children of Gaza go without schooling for a second straight year, the Al Nayzak and Atfaluna centres are providing educational [activities] and psychological support to thousands of students traumatized by months of war. Our humanitarian partners note that 95 per cent of the schools in Gaza have sustained some level of damage over the past year. Yesterday, our humanitarian colleagues supported a mission led by the World Health Organization to Kamal Adwan Hospital in North Gaza Governorate. Despite heavy bombardment very close to the hospital, the team delivered 20,000 litres of fuel; 150 units of blood; medical and surgical supplies for 7,000 interventions; and 60 boxes of water and dry food. The mission – which was also supported by the UN Mine Action Service and the UN Human Rights Office – also transferred 25 patients and more than three dozen companions from Kamal Adwan to Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza city.
WHO’s Director-General, Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus, said that shortly after yesterday’s mission, the third floor of Kamal Adwan was reportedly hit again – injuring six child patients, one of them critically, and damaging water tanks. The team also reached Al Awda Hospital and transferred five patients and their companions from that facility to Al Shifa. However, the Israeli authorities did not allow the delivery of supplies to the hospital, which puts it at risk of having to cease operations. Meanwhile, at the Al Shifa and Al Ahli Hospitals – both in Gaza city – emergency medical teams were deployed to support those facilities. And also a quick update for you on the ongoing polio vaccination campaign. You heard quite a bit about it from our colleague Rik yesterday. The operation continues today at four health facilities in northern Gaza and aims to reach more than 90 per cent of eligible [children]. Since Saturday, World Health Organization, the UN Children’s Fund and UNRWA have reached more than 105,000 children in northern Gaza with a second dose of the vaccine. And a worrying note from the West Bank – our OCHA colleagues tell us that operations carried out by Israeli forces in the northern governorates of Tubas and Jenin today involved lethal war-like tactics that seemed to exceed law enforcement standards. This has included airstrikes and a shoulder-fired explosive projectile, resulting in fatalities. Armed clashes with Palestinians were also reported. OCHA is set to assess the damages in Tulkarm city and its refugee camps, where Israeli forces have been operating since the morning. Widespread damage to water and sewage networks has been reported, and our teams will access the area as soon as the conditions allow.
Lebanon
Moving north to Lebanon. We and our partners are mobilized and will continue to support the scores of men, women and children impacted by this current crisis. Today, the World Health Organization and the Ministry of Public Health inaugurated a new Trauma and Burn Management Unit at the Turkish Trauma and Emergency Hospital in Sidon. Yesterday, a humanitarian convoy successfully delivered one month of medical supplies, medicine and hygiene kits to the Primary Healthcare Centre in Labweh, in the Baalbeck-El Hermel area [...]

United Nations Video: DPRK: Ballistic missile launch - Joint Media Stakeout | United Nations
Joint statement on the intercontinental ballistic missile launch by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), delivered by Robert A. Wood, Alternate Representative of the United States of America for Special Political Affairs in the United Nations, on behalf of the United States, Denmark, Ecuador, France, Greece, Japan, Malta, Panama, the Republic of Korea, Sierra Leone, Slovenia, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
---------------------------
Reading a joint statement today (5 Nov), US Ambassador Robert Wood condemned the October 30 Intercontinental Ballistic Missile launched by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
He said, “The United States, Denmark, Ecuador, France, Greece, Japan, Malta, Panama, the Republic of Korea, Sierra Leone, Slovenia, Switzerland, United Kingdom condemn in the strongest possible terms the DPRK’s October 30 intercontinental ballistic missile launch.”
He continued, “This launch—in addition to the more than 100 ballistic missile launches since 2022 to date—is a clear violation of multiple UN Security Council resolutions, jeopardizes international peace and security, and threatens to undermine the global nonproliferation regime. We must not allow the sheer volume of DPRK launches to normalize its unlawful and destabilizing behavior.”
He added, “In response to this provocation, the United States introduced a press statement to the Council that simply recounted the details of the launch and expressed the Council’s position that it violated UN Security Council resolutions. However, two Council members refused to join a united denunciation and call to uphold the Council’s legally binding measures.”
He stressed, “All Member States are obligated to implement sanctions on the DPRK, which remain in effect and are in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions. We urge all Council Members to abide by their responsibility to monitor implementation of sanctions, maintain international peace and security, and uphold the global nonproliferation regime.”
He concluded, “We call on the DPRK to return to negotiations, comply with its obligations under numerous UN Security Council resolutions, and abandon its weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs.”

United Nations Video: Equal opportunity for women in defence: why it matters
As part of the Breaking Barriers, Building Peace advocacy campaign, this video explores why promoting equal opportunities for women in the defence sector is essential. When women fully participate, defense institutions become more representative of the societies they serve, helping them build trust and can deliver more effective services to the people. However, women remain underrepresented in the security sector, especially in Defence. The UN works with Member States to identify and break down barriers to deliver more inclusive defense sectors with the support of the United Nations.

A new United Nations report focuses on the looming crises of climate change and rapid urbanization. The pressures of poorly managed growth have resulted in the steady attrition of green space in many urban areas, with the average share in urban areas worldwide falling from 19.5 per cent in 1990 to 13.9 per cent in 2020, according to UN-Habitat’s World Cities Report.
However, despite the widespread evidence of the complex barriers cities face in the midst of the deepening climate emergency, the report also highlights the importance of seeing urban areas not just as part of the problem, but part of the solution too — even if their full potential has yet to be realized.

ODN Video: US Election 2024: Could There Be Civil War After Election Day?
On January 6th 2021, after the last presidential election, right-wing protestors stormed the capitol building in Washington DC.
In the runup to this year’s election, we’ve already seen two assassination attempts against one of the candidates, as well as attacks against ballot boxes in two states.
Many now fear that even greater violence will follow election day, regardless of who wins.
But how bad could the violence get, and could it even reach a tipping point where the US descends into civil war?

ODN Video: Shocking Moment Iranian Student Detained After Stripping in Protest
A young woman named Ahoo Daryaei has been detained in Tehran after a bold protest against Iran’s strict hijab laws.
Footage shows Daryaei walking in her underwear on campus at Islamic Azad University.
She appears to walk along the campus calmly before being detained and forced into a car.
University officials have said Daryaei suffers from "severe stress" and has been taken to a psychiatric hospital.
They also suggest she has a “mental disorder,” however some Iranians and human rights groups disagree.
Many believe this was linked to the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement, which encourages women to resist Iran’s hijab laws.
Amnesty International has called for her immediate release, describing the arrest as “violent”.

ODN Video: US Election 2024: Inside Harris and Trump’s Final Campaign Day
Republican and Democratic candidates Donald Trump and Kamala Harris have officially made their final push to win over undecided voters.
Trump kicked off his day in North Carolina and wrapped up in Michigan, making stops in Reading and Pittsburgh along the way.
The former US President assured supporters at his final campaign rally in Michigan that he would “fix” America if elected.
Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris rallied with supporters in Allentown, Scranton, and Pittsburgh, and stopped by a Puerto Rican restaurant in Reading.
She also took to the streets herself, knocking on doors with campaign volunteers for last-minute support.
Harris ended her night in Philadelphia with a high-profile rally featuring global icons such as Oprah Winfrey and Lady Gaga.
With the first votes in Dixville Notch, New Hampshire, evenly split—three for Trump and three for Harris and the latest polls showing the two candidates neck and neck, the race remains too close to call.
