It has been three decades since the beginning of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. An almost unimaginable slaughter, which saw an estimated 800,000 people killed in just 100 days, and shocked the world. Eric Eugene Murangwa was a football at the time, playing for Rayon Sports, one of the top teams in the country, based in the capital Kigali. As a Tutsi, he was in extreme danger when the genocide began. But, despite being well known, he managed to survive, despite the attempts to kill as many Tutsis as possible. He says that football saved his life. Thirty years on, Eric is living in the UK, working as a genocide education campaigner, and an advocate for sport for development and peace.

Joint stakeout by Linda Thomas-Greenfield, Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations, and U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan Tom Pierrello, on the situation in Sudan. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, Representative of the United States to the United Nations, joined by U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan, Tom Pierrello, addressed reporters today (28 Mar) at UN Headquarters to discuss Sudan. She said, “A few weeks ago, the Council came together to adopt a resolution calling for Ramadan ceasefire. That resolution has thus far been ignored. Nearly a year since this crisis began, the situation in Sudan remains catastrophic, and it is only getting worse.” She also said, “We once again call for the SAF to immediately and fully reopen all of his border crossings with Chad for humanitarian purposes, including the Adré border crossing. Should they not the Security Council must take swift action to ensure lifesaving aid is delivered and distributed including, if necessary, through a cross border mechanism.” Tom Pierrello, US Special Envoy for Sudan, said, “And as we head into the rainy season, where conditions could get even worse, now is not the time to pause, now is not the time to escalate. It is the time for us to bring together those actors who can help pave that path to peace, to humanitarian protection access.” Answering a question, Thomas-Greenfield said, “People are starving, and it is really important that we not forget them. They need as much attention as we're paying to crises everywhere else in the world.”

The mandate renewal of the panel of experts assisting the sanctions committee on Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) was vetoed today (28 Mar) by permanent Council member Russia, in a vote of 13 favour to 1 against (Russia) and 1 abstention (China).   Addressing the Council before the vote, Vasily Nebenzya, Russian Permanent Representative to the United Nations, said, “We are witnessing an unprecedented policy from a coalition of Western countries led by the USA to strangle Pyongyang, which includes harsh unilateral restrictions, aggressive propaganda, and direct personal threats against the DPRK authorities. Taken together, all of these measures call into question the very possibility of resolving problems underpinning in the future.” After the vote, Robert A. Wood, US Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, commented, “Today's vote will only embolden the DPRK to act with further impunity. The DPRK jeopardizes global security through the development of long-range ballistic missiles and sanctions evasion efforts.” Hwang Joon Kook, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Korea to the United Nations, stated, “This is outrageous, and it makes no sense at all given the continued and accelerated advancement of the North Korean nuclear and missile programs. Pyongyang has been openly denouncing the authority of the Security Council and pursuing an increasingly dangerous and aggressive nuclear policy, in particular targeting the Republic of Korea. At this moment, Russia seems to be more interested in embracing while encouraging the DPRK for its provision of munitions and ballistic missiles for the conduct of war in Ukraine.” Geng Shuang, Chinese Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, said, “The current situation on the peninsula is characterized by persistent tensions and growing confrontation, which serves no one's interest. This is the last thing China wants to see. The settlement of the Peninsula issue cannot be divorced from political mutual trust and a favorable climate. Blindly increasing sanctions and highlighting pressure will not help resolve issues, it will only be counterproductive. Indulging in military alliances and obsession with the military confrontation will only further exacerbate antagonism and tensions, making the goal of denuclearizing the peninsula and maintaining its peace and stability even more elusive.” Talking after the Security Council in her national capacity, Pascale Baeriswyl, Permanent Representative of Switzerland to the United Nations, said, “The panel of experts independently and transparently documents the implementation of sanctions. Due to the veto exercise today, the panel will not be able to continue its important work, including in documenting apparent violations of the sanction’s regime in place. This further increases the suspicions around current and future violations.”

India’s prime minister Nahrendra Modi and his BJP party are widely predicted to win next month’s general election. But his second term in power has been marked by deepening religious polarisation and increasing islamophobia. There are more than 200 million muslims in India, making up the country’s largest religious minority. Following a wave of violence against India’s muslims, members of the community have told the BBC that they are living in fear and are being marginalised and suppressed. Those claims are strongly denied by India’s Hindu nationalist government. Sophie Raworth presents BBC News at Ten reporting from northern India by Yogita Limaye. Mental health services around the world are chronically under resourced – but there are hopes that artificial intelligence (AI) might offer a solution. On Character.ai, a popular platform where anyone can create chatbots based on fictional or real people, users can talk to a psychologist persona. Computer programmer Eugenia Kuyda is the founder of Replika, a US chatbot app that says it offers users an "AI companion who cares, always here to listen and talk, always on your side". Other apps in the mental health sector are far more cautious about using AI in the first place. One of those is meditation app Headspace, which has more than 30 million users, and in the UK is approved by the NHS. 45 people have died after a bus plunged off of a bridge in South Africa. The bus was carrying 46 religious pilgrims who were travelling from Botswana to the Zion Christian Church in Moria, a small town outside of the city of Polokwane. Local authorities said the driver of the bus lost control over the Mmamatlaka mountain pass, plunging 164 feet into a ravine before bursting into flames. Among the 45 casualties, the only survivor of the horror crash was an 8-year-old child who was receiving urgent medical attention in a local hospital. The provincial government said search operations were ongoing late into Thursday night, but many bodies were burned beyond all recognition and still inside the wreckage. Just a day before the bus crash, the South African government called on people to be vigilant travelling on Thursday and Friday, because of the expected high number of worshippers traveling across the northeast to Moira for the Zion Church Easter Festival. This year marks the first time the #easter pilgrimage and celebration has gone ahead since the COVID-19 pandemic. Play Video: Hamas Calls for End to ‘Deadly’ Aid Airdrops After Drowning Disaster

This footage apparently shows an incident on Monday where a dozen people drowned attempting to reach aid in Gaza. The disaster occurred after hundreds battled strong currents to reach crates of aid off the coast. Hamas has now called for an end to airdropping aid over Gaza. Many aid airdrops are deliberately dropped over the coast. Coastal drops may have been seen as safer, after five were crushed to death by falling aid packages earlier this month. Dropping aid over densely populated areas is inherently dangerous. And some human rights groups have criticised airdrops as an inefficient and degrading way of getting aid into Gaza. There is mounting pressure for Israel to allow more aid to flow into Gaza by land. Israel has been accused of restricting access to Gaza, even in the face of widespread starvation in the territory. With some in the UN even accusing Israel of using starvation as a weapon of war. But Israel claims there is ‘no limit’ to the amount of aid it is willing to let through by land. It blames aid agencies for not distributing the aid efficiently, and Hamas for hoarding aid for its fighters and commanders. This has been categorically denied by aid agencies, who say their staff routinely risk their lives to get aid to Gaza’s civilian population. #gaza #israel #palestine Subscribe here: http://bit.ly/ODNsubs TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@ondemandnews Twitter: https://twitter.com/ODN Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ODN/ If you wish to purchase any of our clips for commercial use, please visit: http://www.itnproductions.co.uk/news/

The UK is almost doubling its aid to Sudan, to £89 million, as the humanitarian crisis there continues to escalate. (Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe) It's almost a year since Sudan's army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces turned on each other - plunging the country into war.
