Virtual Press Conference by Myrta Kaulard, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Mozambique, on the situation in Mozambique. ------ UN agencies are ramping up efforts on Tuesday to help communities in Mozambique hit hard by Tropical Cyclone Eloise, which barrelled through the country just three weeks after the devastating Tropical Storm Chalane. Cyclone Eloise made landfall near Beira, a major city in Sofala province, central Mozambique, around 2 AM Saturday (local time) with high winds, heavy rains and severe flooding. The city was in the eye of ferocious Cyclone Idai, which killed more than 600 people and left hundreds more injured, in 2019. Preliminary figures indicate that at least six people died and 12 injured due to Cyclone Eloise, but the number may rise as more information becomes available. The storm also damaged more than 8,800 houses and at least 26 health centres, and disrupted power and communication links.

United Nations Video: Peacebuilding Fund, Palestinian Elections, Ethiopia & other topics -Daily Briefing (26 January 2021)

Related Videos On: Peacebuilding Fund, Palestinian Elections, Ethiopia & other topics -Daily Briefing (26 January 2021)

Noon briefing by Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General. Highlights: - Senior Personnel Appointment - Secretary-General – Peacebuilding Fund - Middle East - Ethiopia - Ethiopia Journalist - Yemen - Central African Republic - South Sudan - Comoros/COVID-19 - UN Environment - Holocaust Remembrance - Noon Briefing Guests Today and Tomorrow - Honour Roll SENIOR PERSONNEL APPOINTMENT The Secretary-General is appointing Khassim Diagne of Senegal as his Deputy Special Representative for Protection and Operations in the UN Peacekeeping Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Mr. Diagne succeeds David Gressly of the United States to whom the Secretary-General is deeply grateful for his dedicated service to the UN peacekeeping operations in the DRC. Mr. Diagne brings to the position more than 25 years of experience in refugee protection, political affairs, management and oversight. Most recently, he is serving as Director of the Political, Peacekeeping, Humanitarian and Human Rights Unit in the Secretary-General's Executive Office.  SECRETARY-GENERAL – PEACEBUILDING FUND At the virtual Replenishment Conference for the Peacebuilding Fund, held this morning, the Secretary-General said that in the current context, we need an approach that goes beyond crisis response and boosts long-term investments in prevention and peacebuilding.         The impact and cost-effectiveness of the Peacebuilding Fund have been widely recognized and appreciated by the 50 nations it has supported, the Secretary-General said in his remarks. Yet, we continue to massively underinvest in it.   The Fund prioritises areas that may otherwise be considered too risky, or that are chronically underfunded. In addition, as part of the Comprehensive Response to COVID, the Fund quickly responded to the risks and tensions heightened by the pandemic.   The Secretary-General called on all Member States and partners to contribute to the Fund, even a small amount. Doing this would allow us to finally accomplish the much needed ‘quantum leap’ and send a clear signal that together, we can successfully invest in building and sustaining peace.   MIDDLE EAST Tor Wennesland briefed the Security Council this morning for the first time in his new role as the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process. He told the members that Nickolay Mladenov’s performance as Special Coordinator is a hard act to follow.  He added that he joins the Secretary-General in welcoming the Presidential decree issued by President Mahmoud Abbas to hold legislative, presidential and Palestinian National Council elections this year.  Mr. Wennesland warned that the COVID-19 crisis continues to take a staggering toll across the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT) and Israel. Concerted efforts to contain and halt the spread of the virus have succeeded in lowering the overall number of active cases in the West Bank and Gaza.  However, the cost in lives and livelihoods remains high, particularly in the Gaza Strip.   In this context, he said, the UN continues to encourage Israel to help address the priority needs of the Palestinians in the Occupied Palestinian Territories and to support COVID-19 vaccine availability more generally.  Full Highlights: https://www.un.org/sg/en/content/noon-briefing-highlight?date%5Bvalue%5D%5Bdate%5D=26%20January%202021

United Nations Video: Holocaust Commemoration 2021 (27 January 2021) - UN Chief

Related Videos On: Holocaust Commemoration 2021 (27 January 2021) - UN Chief

António Guterres (United Nations Secretary-General) on the 2021 International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust Today we honour the memory of the six million Jews and millions of others who were systematically murdered in the Holocaust by the Nazis and their collaborators. This year’s anniversary takes place under the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has revealed longstanding fractures and injustices in our societies and contributed to a resurgence in antisemitism and xenophobia. The Holocaust was the culmination of two millennia of discrimination, attacks, expulsions and periodic mass killings of Jews. It should have ended antisemitism for good. But it did not. Antisemitism unfortunately remains alive and well. Today, white supremacists and neo-Nazis are resurgent, organizing and recruiting across borders, intensifying their efforts to deny, distort and rewrite history including the Holocaust. The COVID-19 pandemic has given them new opportunities to target minorities, based on religion, race, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, disability and immigration status. We must make urgent joint efforts to stop them. As we consider the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, we must address the fragilities and gaps exposed by the pandemic and strengthen our mutual bonds, based on our common humanity. This year must be a year of healing. Healing from the pandemic, and healing our broken societies in which hatred has all too easily taken root. As we remember those who died in the Holocaust and honour the survivors, our best tribute is the creation of a world of equality, justice and dignity for all. Global Video: The uprising of India’s farmers: What’s behind the protests?

Related Videos On: The uprising of India’s farmers: What’s behind the protests?

As a standoff between tens of thousands of protesting farmers and the Indian government continues to intensify over new legislation farmers claim will threaten their livelihoods, Taz Dhaliwal looks back at the factors that led to the demonstrations that have garnered international attention. Farmers in India have been rallying for months against three agricultural laws enacted Sept. 20 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. The Indian government has argued the changes will give farmers more freedom, but farmers are concerned the new laws will drive down their products’ prices with no safeguards to protect them against corporate takeovers and exploitation. But the crisis in India's agricultural sector is nothing new as the industry has been suffering for decades. Taz explains.
